HELP!! I just started and keep dying
Are you dodging? This is the most important thing to staying alive.
As survivable as Guardian is they still need to dodge. If you’re curious about something in the game type /wiki “what you want to know about”. For example, if you’re curious about a stat you could type /wiki Power /wiki Precision etc.
The story missions always move up a level 2 after each completion, so unless you’re overleveled you won’t be on par with it 100% of the time.
For gaining XP gathering gives good XP, as well as (usually) killing yellow critters, events are one of the best ways of XP, doing hearts, and getting all the waypoints/vistas/pois for map completion.
If you want to get some combat practice. Click the dual sword icon in the top left of your screen. This will take you to the Heart of the Mists (or HotM for short). You can access all weapons/traits/weapon sigils/armor runes here and there are Golems for you to practice your moves and stuff on.
Hope this helps
i dont know how to dodge…i find dodging bad because i dont know when im going to get attacked and when i dodge and lose out on DPS because i roll away from enemy.
They really dont teach you any combat mechanics at all….no idea how to attack and dodge effectively.
Hi and welcome to the game.
I have a level 80 guardian and I have restarted many guardians to see the different cultural storylines.
The first mechanic in this game that is overlooked often is dodge. Dodging (and also simple moving around) can help you a lot when surviving.
The second thing that is important is that you know when you can fight close (more damage) and know when you have to back away (safer). At level 7 you got a second weaponslot. I would advise you to put in a ranged weapon (staff or scepter+shield or scepter+focus). when a fight gets tuff you can always back away.
The third thing is that you should be aware that when it comes to events that are above your level you can get in trouble more easy. e.g. the cave troll in Queesndale. Even with my level 80 guardian I have trouble to staying in close combat and I often have to back up to a ranged weapon.
Last of all, if you hit the problem that you can’t do things off your level or below, there is a trick for that. It is to change area.
You are in of the 5 starting area’s. This means you can change. To do this go to your home town, somewhere in the center you will find a purple portal. Go through it and you end up in Lion’s arch (the main town). You end up in a plaza with several other portals. Go through any of them and you come into the hometown of a different race. From there you can go to the starter are of that race with new low level hearts and events to do.
If you are on a european server feel free to add me to your friendslist. I’m happy to help you a bit on the way, show some tricks and give advise, and if needed even provide you with a bit of cash to get your armor repaired. I am prolly online in bout 90 minutes.

thank you!!! i am on NA server
Man, i’m a CHarr…i think i should change area
small trick bout finding your way on the central portal plaza in lions arch. Each portal is guarded by two guards of that race. So if you go to e.g. the human area and then want to return you need the portal guarded by the two char

i went to another race area and i still have to do my charr quest?? i do i change over?
i went to the grove
You do not ‘need’ to do any story line quests. Build up levels by doing exploration, change areas like you have done. You get exp for collecting resourses as well, just buy some copper tools and look around for a bit. You sound too stressed out.
i want to do quets for the storyline and progression
The storyline is staggered to be done throughout your leveling, not to be your main leveling source of exp. Hearts, pop up to get exp, events pop up. Don’t solo group events. There are no fixed rails, but there are rails.
As you mentioned, you are on a storyline where you are attacked by level 8 bats. This means you are prolly on a level 8 or 9 storyline.
As being mentioned nearly everything in this game gives you experience to level. But it is impossible to get to level 80 by just doing storylines. So it is important to be atleast of the same level as your storyline indicates (and depending on your profession and the kind of enemy’s often its better to be 1 or 2 levels higher). In between storylines you have to do other things. Just doing hearts and events isn’t enough. You can mis this with other tasks like exploring towns, gathering materials and crafting, but also by chnaging area.
The main storyline remains that of the char (untill level 28, then they start to merge and other things then race is deciding what your storyline is. So my advise to leave the grove north to an area called caledon forrest and do hearts and events there till you are level 10, then return for your personal story and you can then also explore more of your own starter are (plains of ashford).

Dodging does take practice. I was horrible at it in the beginning. Even now I only get in the dodging groove on rare occasions, so I’ve found other means of survival.
Still, the main trick is to watch the thing you’re fighting. If it rears up, holds an arm up and glows, takes a deep breath, starts to shimmer, or any of the other many “tells” the monsters have, it’s about to unleash something big. That’s what you want to dodge. Or else hit a block, aegis, missile reflect, stability skill, etc. Dodging isn’t the only way to avoid a hit!
Sometimes I think the first profession we play in this game will always feel hardest to us … my Thief may be my main but he’s hardly my choice for dungeons, I doubt I have him traited or weaponed well enough, and he falls over in fights all the time. Whereas my Guardian feels nigh invincible, and my Mesmer (who is my 5th 80) turned into something glorious on land and in water.
Keep at it. Once you “get it” you will really start having the fun this game can offer
OMFGGGG! HOW AM I Supposed to do the fuking missions if i get 2 shot by some level 8 bats in the missions??
like i can’t be dodging all day since i run out of energy and i actually have to deal damage.
I think many here have given you very good advice and it is great we have such a good community. I would like to offer you a bit of off topic advice so that you can continue to play, learn and take part in this helpful community on the forums Generally the forum moderators tend to frown on trying to get around the language filters by changing the spelling of certain words. You may find this information helpful for two reasons. It may help you avoid infractions or forum suspensions. It may also help you avoid issues in game as using the same way to express yourself in chat might also result in a suspension. Just giving you a heads up.
Oh, also, doing damage is great but not the prime concern! Surviving matters more, imo. My guardian generally does a tenth the damage of others around her, but nothing keeps her down long and she not only buffs and heals allies so -they- can do the damage, she wears away the opposition over time.

True ,
When I was to the store I was thinking to add that too. when it comes to your utility skills (7,8 and 9) you should imo use ti to make yourself and the people around you more protected. My build with all skills unlocked prefers to use shouts as skill 7 and 8, a damage skill at 9 and again an elite skill thats primarly for protection.

That’s how i honestly always spell that word, isn’t that the spelling??
Anyway guys, i tried out the sceptor and it has gotten me through the quests, even thogh it is a bit boring just sending slow missiles lol
Here’s a tip: auto attacks really don’t form the majority of your damage. Dodging will not affect your DPS much if you time your skills right. It’s quite evident with a greatsword.
Leap of Faith (3) → Symbol of Wrath (4) → Whirling Wrath (2) → Binding Blade (5) followed by auto attacks. Initiate this chain whenever possible, and your enemies should go down fairly quickly. Dodge in between if needed.

Very true, scepter is rather boring, thats why i recommend to use in the swap weapon slot.
As I said before, I have a total of 8 things I can do to keep myself alive (as a level 80 guardian). First is my healing skill, then I have two shouts that gives me protective boons (and I use a trait so they also remove a condition). Furthermore I have 2 virtues (f2 and f3) that give me health back or give me retaliation. then my elite skill makes me invulnarable for a few seconds (wich buys me extra time as well) and recharges my virtues for another 2 protections.
If that all is done and my skills and virtues are all on cooldown I can switch to my scepter/shield using the weaponswap button to get more space to move around and keep my distance from the heaviest damage.
Off course when you start out you dont have that much protection yet, and you might decide to skill a bit more to the offensive, so then you will find yourself more often in ranged. I totally agree ranged is boring, but it does the job when needed (slowly).

I would highly recommend you give focus a try. It has a nice blind and shield type effect. I use it on my guardian over shield just because it allows me to keep moving and still block. Plus the #5 skill does damage to the foe if its shattered. I know scepter is boring but I recommend it over staff because staff is kinda clunky in 1v1 fights, however, in groups its amazing. You might also try as your main weapon set mace/focus and secondary scepter/shield, these weapons have lots of blocks for survivability. Then move to greatsword or hammer once you feel comfortable. Greatsword is my favorite weapon on my guardian.
GS+Sw-Focus gives you a block, 2 blinds and you still have 2 dodges. Haven’t died with my guardian all the way to lvl 47 now.
In combat you should pay close attention to how the mobs move before they attack. All of ’m have something that give it away.
Also you can bind dodging to any key you want to make it easier for you.
That’s basically all I know and have used with great efficiency.
Bats screech and fly up slightly right before they attack.
Also as you are leveling always try to wear armor and trinkets not more than 5 levels under your own level.
Regarding Personal stories, at least some (or more) can be (very) difficult when u do them solo at intended character level.
When u encounter a difficult one, do it again when u r at least few or alot more character levels higher.
Or, try find more players to do the personal story mission with.
As to spelling, correctly spelled there is a c after the u. Which will promptly turn here to “kitten” instead.
I’m a helper!
Learn the telegraphing of high-damage attacks, use interrupts (knock-back, knock-down, daze) or damage mitigation (blind, block, dodge) to avoid those big hits. If you’re fighting things that are a higher level than you, make sure of two things:
- Your gear is up-to-date; nothing worse than taking more damage than required ‘cause your gear is 10 levels below you
- You don’t aggro too much at once. I was soloing level 16 veterans at level 10 on my guard, but would be totally kittened if another mob came into the fight
This is weird I hardly ever died as a guardian. But dodging is extremely important! You can easily dodge and get back to fighting the enemy. Make sure your armor is up to date and builds don’t really matter much early game. If you are falling behind levels make sure you visit other zones. You can visit like 5 other 1-15 areas where if you complete each map you will get tons of exp and money. Just focus on completing maps for a lot of exp and if you are behind your story level just visit another zone of the same level range. From level 30-80 there is always a second zone for your level range.
If you need practice learning how to dodge, make a thief. You’ll pick it up in no time.
rule 1 of guild wars 2 we don’t talk about guild wars 2.
rulle 2 you don’t fight like other mmo and stand still hoping you’ll hit harder then them. you must keep moving.
For dodging, when you dodge, you dodge in the direction you are currently moving, holding down ‘d’ and dodging makes you move to the right, ‘a’ the left, ‘w’ dodges forward, the default (and with ‘d’) is to dodge backward.
You can dodge by double-tapping a direction key. But I recommend you turn this off in the options menu. It’s a disaster later in the game.
Many people rebind their dodge keys to something on the mouse. Personally, I have it mapped to pushing my mouse wheel to the right. It’s an easy action that I can do very quickly.
Also, for guardian, the hammer is a slow but very effective weapon. The third autoattack hit creates a symbol which reduces your damage by 33%. So you can try that. Hammer 2 is very effective.
For the scepter, scepter 2 (smite) is so good that you can get through a lot of the game just spamming that.
Finally, I recommend you get use to moving a lot. Very few attacks lock on, so you can mitigate a lot of damage by running around your opponent.
Lots of great advice here from the community. I just wanted to add a couple of things.
Another over looked way of gaining a lot of exp is crafting. You can easily gain levels if you throw in some crafting along with your exploring. Crafting early on is pretty easy and the materials required are in abundance in the starter areas.
Also another wonderful thing about guardians dodging is “Selfless Daring” the trait. It heals you and surrounding team players every time you dodge
