Hammer / Great-sword combo
I think that on warriors and guardians you should always have one melee set and one ranged set. Some enemy’s are a pain to fight melee and some are a pain to range. Being able to switch is imo very valuable. So that means choosing between greatsword and hammer.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
On both my guard and warrior, I have ranged and melee. I use ranged while closing in then switch to melee, then dodge out and use ranged while kiting if my health drops enough.
If you have both weapon sets as melee only, it’s too restrictive imo.
Thanks, I’ll give the scepter another shot, maybe with the torch?
I use Greatsword / Hammer a lot in Open world PvE and they compliment each other very effectivly.
Perhaps you don’t know how to swap the weapons and use the skills you need at a given situation? That’s usually the case with people.
I don’t mind helping learn if you wish to procceed with Greadsword / Hammer however, if you find other weapon combinations work best for your needs, then I say stick with what you are comfortable.
Feel free to add me in game to your contact if you have questions you wish to ask since I’m playing right now =)
I just find the skills very similar. I know how to swap weapons and use skills while others cooldown etc.
My Mesmer has distinct uses for the weapon sets I use and they are very defined, I find my guard a little limited with Hammer/GS combo.
As a D/X elementalist main, I’ll say that having both of your weaponsets be melee is very manageable. The main thing is that you carry a ranged weapon in your bag, and know when to equip it out of combat if the next encounter asks for range.

Sorry, but I run my Guardian with Hammer / Great Sword and don’t see the complimentary issue you do. If you are just looking for a carved in stone skill rotation, I try to avoid those and just use the best option available for the situation.
Scepter / Torch is a good combo if you want to attack at range and then have some options when you or the target closes to melee or you want to provide some party support. Guardian doesn’t really have a good “stay at range” off-hand….that’s one of the reasons they are likely listed last if you rank classes with good ranged capability.
