Hi everyone,

Has anyone bought a copy of windows 10 home?

If so, can someone tell me if installing it will format my computer?

I simply want to upgrade windows 7 to 10, and keep my stuff.

I think most of us got it free. Does it install differently if it was purchased? You might find more answers over on a Windows 10 forum.

It’s free, yes. And I put it on my laptop yesterday. It didn’t format anything or wipe anything; it just installed the OS with all of my old settings and files still intact.

I’m not looking to do the free upgrade, but to purchase a copy.

It will give you an option to upgrade and save settings. If you run it during boot up it will search for previously installed windows and ask you what to do. You also can just put the disc in while your in windows and it will ask if you want to upgrade. Why wouldnt you just do the free upgrade?

If you do the free upgrade, you can use the option to upgrade and keep everything. I upgraded from 7 to 10 and have had no data loss at all.

There’s literally no difference between a purchase and an upgrade, all you’re doing by purchasing instead of upgrading is screwing yourself out of money, but I doubt using a boot disc would allow you to simply upgrade the OS without overwriting.

It might, but I can’t find any info on it, because no one’s buying 10 because it’s free.

If you haven’t had a reservation update come through yet, simply upgrade to 10 using the media creation tool from windows here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

That’s what I did (didn’t want to wait for my reservation download, call me impatient) and it works perfectly.

There’s no reason to buy unless you’re using an illegal copy of windows.

No, it’s not a free trial thing; it’s just free, as long as you upgrade it while the offer is valid. From the Microsoft site:

Yes, it’s free. This is a full version of Windows, not a trial or introductory version. It is available for a limited time: you have until July 29, 2016 to take advantage of this offer. Once you upgrade, you’ll have Windows 10 for free on that device.

I would however, make a back up on a flash drive or cd or external hard drive of any important documents you do not wish to lose or can’t recreate again.

While nothing should go wrong in the update, sometimes things do mess up.

Not to mention, any irreplaceable and/or important file should have a back up off of the computer. Hard drives can and do fail.

True, it’s not free if you don’t already have Windows 7 or 8. I already had Windows 7 on my main computer and 8 on my laptop, so it was basically “free” for me.

Here’s a review of the Home package and the experience upgrading. It doesn’t sound like a format is required.

Nope, it’s Microsofts plan to get rid of the Older OS’s so they don’t have to support them, and it also encouraged people to make apps for there app store.

If you make a fresh install it normally saves all your userdata under window.old.
