should stay out of the way of those doing it”

I’ve been having a ton of fun in GW2, and a lot of my friends have also been playing. I’d love to know what kind of sales figures Anet is looking at for the least few weeks.
I don’t think anything has been released from NPD about numbers for GW2…
According to an interview on Joystiq, ANet reported that GW2 was the second most successful launch, following Star Wars: The Old Republic, in number of copies sold.
lol — I dunno if I would call SWTOR a successful launch…
Didn’t SWTOR sell like 2 million copies at launch? Sounds pretty successful to me.
Well determining that digital sales are offline for almost a week now I’d say they’ve sold quite a bunch…
And of course they’re selling even more boxes now that players have no alternative.
I actually went to 3 different stores to get my copy, sold out at Walmart and Bestbuy, eventually got my hands on the last copy at a different Walmart along with the Brady guide. Now I’m just waiting here as my client installs the updates with my schools lovely 70-90 KB/s connection, I’ve been updating for 3 hours and I’m at 20%!
I read in a Forbes article GW2 had over 400,000 in head start.

Yes SWTOR’s launch was successful, the game itself isn’t. The launch was successful because of the popular IP and the hype, the game itself isn’t successful because of the garbage pvp and lack of multiplayer content (it’s an ok single player game).
See the difference.

This game has garbage PvE.
Just FYI – when the numbers are available, they’ll be here:

Have to wait for the this quarter’s results though because GW2 launched after the end of the previous quarter. The previous quarter is sort of interesting reading. I had no idea that Lineage was such a money maker.
I read in a Forbes article GW2 had over 400,000 in head start.
It had 400k concurrent users, which means many more than that had bought the game. Good guesses are somewhere between 1.5 and 2m prior to turning off digital sales.

They has 400,000 CONCURRENT users. Not copies sold. I believe they sold over 1 mil pre purchases. You should be able to find the article somewhere, I think Joystiq had one on the sales.
I was downloading client for 12 hours before the launch :P
This is the first time I’ve heard of a game stopping digital downloads because they were selling too many and couldn’t support the growing user base.
I wonder if it was actually a PR stunt to get people to think “wow, it must really be good if they can’t keep up with the sales”.

Blizzard stopped shipping WoW in late ’04 and early ’05 due to server issues. This is the digital equivalent of that.
Guild Wars 2 Sales: One Million Pre-Served, Record 400,000 Playing at Once
I think it’s odd that a games/tech reporter doesn’t understand the difference between pre-purchasing and pre-ordering.
GUILD WARS 2 TOPS EUROPEAN CHARTS AND SCORES BIG WITH MEDIA
GW 2 has the number one spot on Amazon also.

You can still buy digital copies from all sources aside from ANet. BestBuy and Amazon primarily.
Not sure how accurate these numbers are since they probably only had time at that point to report pre-launch / pre-order but vgchartz says 900’000 globally @ sept 1.
