Good day everyone, I hope this New Year provides you with all that you desire.

Anywho, just thought I would say hello and confess that I am downloading the game right now, I’m getting the MAC Beta version… don’t worry, I’ve acquired a 2 button mouse.

I’ll be honest in saying that this will be my first ‘REAL’ mmo type game, unless you count Monster Hunter Tri? >_> My main reason for getting this game is that I am moving to South Korea, to teach English, for a year at the end of the week and would like something to keep me occupied, especially throughout the stinging winter months.

-So any tips and advice you all have would be most welcome. The first question I have is what do you think the best class/race is for a complete novice?

Thanks in advance, I’m looking forward to meeting and questing with you all.

8% downloaded so far…. sigh

Race is purely for story and looks. So it doesn’t matter in how difficult it is. Pick whatever appeals to you
For class I would say Ranger. It is rather easy to play and to master. The only downside is that you can never become really really good, but you can fginish the game easily and are also welcome in party’s.

GW2 is not the ideal mmo to start with imo. The reason is that they wanted to make it interesting for the hardcore mmo-players from the start. My advise is to find a friendly guild that is willing to help you. The positive thing atm is that due to christmass there are a lot of people who got the game as a present and there are a lot of new players. This means many experienced people have made new characters to help their friends.

Also you need to decide on the server your playing on. I am on the european server Gandara.

Welcome to the game Mr Rawky!

For class, I would suggest you spend the first few hours of the game just playing around with different classes and see if any feel cool to you. Some classes are arguably harder to play then others, but I find that, regardless of difficulty, you need to play a class you enjoy to find the game entertaining.

Ranger is pretty good for a novice. I’m leveling one now, currently level 51. They are a run profession. Damage could be better, but I am running with a bear since it seems to be the only pet that can stay alive through a whole fight without having to manage him.

Hey Mr Rawky!
Another new face to Tyria, and i warmly welcome you to the community!

About your questions: race is not important in a way that it will make any difference for a new player.
A class that is “better” for a new player: well, you have Ranger, if you prefer to keep the fighting away from you, and it is indeed a ‘not-that-difficult’ class to learn the game with. If you like more the close and in-your-face playstyle, take Guardian or Warrior (but i prefer Guardian, as you can be soooo many things)

As somebody mentioned a guild that could help you, i would rever to the link in my signature. We have a great thread going that wants to unite people from all over the globe to help each other out. As a result off that thread, we started a guild (no mendatory to join, but it makes helping a bit easier ) and you can join that as well. We do have players all over the world and on most servers, so there should be somebody you can hook up with to learn the basics off the game!

Enjoy your stay in Tyria and lets hope the download if done real soon

Also consider a Warrior. When I was first starting, my Ranger died a lot because I wasn’t used to doing what it took to maintain distance from the fray. The Warrior has more armor and is meant to handle hand-to-hand battle as well as being able to fight at range.

Warriors don’t have pets, though. On the one hand, this means you won’t need to learn pet management right away. On the other hand, you can play a Ranger with default pet behavior at the beginning, anyway.

Edited to add: Welcome to the game!
