Champion: Phantom, Hunter, Legionnaire, Genius
WvW rank: Diamond Colonel | Maguuma
Which of the three would you recommend? I’m leaning toward a human Necromancer or a Sylvari Elementalist (seems fitting.) I know Mesmer’s are great and all but I’ve tried one before and wasn’t super thrilled with it. Doesn’t mean it’s out of the question just pointing it out that it’s my least favored of the three.
I’m mostly in World vs World and I’m about 50/50 in zergs or in a havoc group. I also prefer to be a support role so if any of the three have good supportive capabilities (healing, granting swiftness or other boons) I’d prefer that one.
If you like playing support than your best bet would be to roll an elementalist, they have access to a lot of combo fields that can be helpful provided your teammates aren’t stupid enough to use them properly.
Mesmers are notorious for their boring levelling since most of the class’ depth lies in the traits which you can only fully explore once you’re 80.
Mesmer is the most boring, useless, monochromatic class in the game. Then you hit level 40 and you fart kitten smiles and throw up rainbows. Seriously, level 40 and after is when the class opens up. It’s such a trait dependent class and still the only one you’ll hear people say “just wait it out”. When you’re 80 it’s support potential goes through the roof. Your utility is basically unrivaled in this game for both zergs and havoc groups.
Elementalist… this was/is my first love class. Made one back and in beta 1 and I can tell you this from the bottom of my heart, I regret putting so much time into it. I got used to how fun D/D used to be as it was the fastest paced, action packed, joyride that I wanted. Then the nerfs started coming and ANET forgot to stop nerfing. The worst part is after playing D/D every other class has felt boring in comparison.
Necro I can’t accurately tell you too much about aside from with dire gear, you’re going to be the biggest, tankiest, beefiest pair of training wheels you can be =P. It’s super simple and you can still be a massive help in zergs and havoc.

Not with how conditions work you can’t.

Idk, I’ve seen plague form necros holding borderland castles till people get back. It also may just be me, but I’ve never had a problem playing conditional builds in zergs.
I have all 3 classes.
In WvW the one i prefer the most, depends on what i am doing. I love the Mesmer to roam. I love the Necromancer to Zerg fights and i have my Elementalist on Support now. It’s all about how the class feels to you.

Conditions work fine in WvW. Epidemic would be your bread and butter. Propagating conditions to a huge patch of the enemy zerg is pretty fantastic.
Aside from that, though, Power Necros do incredibly well. Their Wells do fantastic AOE damage, and their death shroud benefits from Berzerkers as well.

Yeah, I was referring more to open world stuff where having more than 1 necro at any time is meaningless. I can agree on the WvW, from what I’ve picked up, haven’t done it much since it was always too dependant on numbers for my taste.

If you didn’t play a mesmer to level 40 then you didnt play a mesmer and they only get better from there . Other than that i would say Ele since Water just got a big buff

Hi
Both Ele and necros are great and versatile in wvw across all playstyles, solo, small group roaming, havoc, large scale with appropriate gear / utility adjustments. The group I currently run with lacks both and we wish we had at least 2 more of each.
If I were to enjoy both equally, I would ask the group I run with which one they would prefer better.
However, outside WvW currently ele is more flexible, especially when it comes to groups going for the more challenging content. So from that perspective, I think ele has an advantage.
Well, this is quite a subjective thing. Different people will tell you different things. I recently tried a Mesmer and I was absolutely thrilled. I find both Necro and Ele quite boring in comparison.
Necros and staff eles are both extremely useful in large zergs. Mesmers are also useful although most organized groups only run a couple of them. For havoc squads, I would say necros are less useful than eles (running dagger/dagger or scepter/dagger) or mesmers.
I appreciate the responses, everyone.

Lol about the Mesmer. Yeah I didn’t play it to 40 or up so I imagine I missed out on a lot. Which is probably why I wasn’t so fond of it. Thanks for the advice, I may yet give it another try although it still remains my lowest preference.
From the sounds of it, I’ll be going for an Elementalist since it has the best support abilities and just sounds overall the most appealing to me. Now for coming up with a name!
