Hi, first of all I am completely aware that there have been countless topics like this one, and I’m sorry that I’m creating yet another one but I’m getting really desperate here.

I love the game. It’s the best MMO I’ve played..ever. But the thing is while I love the game and everything in it, I can’t seem to find a profession for myself. For the past week and a half I’ve been creating new characters, getting them up to lvls 6 to like 15 and then deleting them. I know I should be the one to choose what profession to play, based on which one I like the most but the thing is, I can’t choose.. I pre ordered the game back when there were beta tests during the weekends and after it was released I played for a while. I quit, then in December I started playing again, got a character to lvl 56 or so (that is of yet my highest character in GW2) and quit again after a while. Now I decided to come back, and as I said I love the game, like every aspect of it – the graphics, the combat, the enemies, the quests, the events, the livingworld events etc. etc. etc. but I can’t enjoy them to the fullest because I can’t seem to find a profession to play with. Because I know you guys can’t really give me advice on professions if you don’t know details/what I like I’m gonna try to give you some background info. That 56 lvl character mentioned above was a Guardian and tbh I loved it. I started a Guardian again this time (I have a tendency to delete my old characters, I regreted doing that but oh well) got him to 32 and got completely bored of it. I like the ranger, but I feel like my dmg output gets lower and lower as I get a higher level. And I don’t really, at all, like the Greatsword Ranger thing (IMO Rangers should use long/shortbows, not a huge 2h sword). I really don’t have that much of an opinion on the other 6 professions except that I don’t like thief, so that’s out of the question. So, some advice on what/how to play, what to try out etc. would be much appreciated.

Again sorry for another “Tell me what to play” topic. And sorry for the wall of text

Create a character of what ever profession you are interested in…

Once you have completed intro…go to sPvP…icon at top

Your level 80! Can change your traits/skills for free as much as you want, have any equipment you want…

Experiment with all 8 character classes.

Which ever you like best at 80, start levelling up in PvE/WvW.

Also, DON’T DELETE ANY CHARACTER unless you need the character slot…there is no reason too, you can basically change everything except race…so no need for delete…

I have never deleted any character ever in GW…hence have all 8 character classes…

Well, I do have only 5 slots so I probably will need to delete someone from time to time. Can I actually change looks? I’m gonna guess I’ve got to use gems.

Ultimately, what clicks with you is probably going to be more nuanced than what we can give here. Individual profession forums will be better at selling you on their preferred profession.

As a brief intro, some professions will sell themselves better early on than others.

Engineer, for example, sells itself very short in the first 20 levels. Utility skills are everything to an engineer, and early on, you simply don’t have them. There’s a huge difference in what the various skill types bring to the table, and you might not find a playstyle that syncs up for you until your 40s.

Mesmer is another profession that takes some getting used to. Early on, people generally underutilize their clones and phantasms or treat them like you would a pet. Finding a comfortable rhythm of illusion creation and destruction is at first unnatural, but ultimately vital to becoming proficient with the profession.

Then there are professions like the thief and elementalist that are just squishy as tissue paper at low levels. With the right investment, both can become extremely elusive and frustrating targets to take down, but you’d never know it going by the early game.

Ultimately, you’re going to have to invest some time in a character to know if it’s really the one for you. For many of us, that means we may have missed our true calling because pushing 8 characters past 40 wasn’t a realistic goal.

For me, I discovered late that I’m pretty solid with a mesmer. Better than I am with my thief. But my thief was my first love. Even though I’m not very good with her, I’ve invested a lot of time, gold and effort into her and will continue to call her my “main”.

Yes there are complete makeover kits that change looks.

If you stop deleting your characters and get 1 to 80th level, you can easy earn enough gold ingame to buy gems that you can buy another 3 character slots, plus makeover kits if you want…
