…because I’m obviously not playing them right.

So, firstly, a bit of background info; my MMO “history” is pretty much non-existent. I played WoW for about a week, and Guild Wars 1 for about a month; Guild Wars 2 is genuinely the only MMO that I want to experience to it’s fullest.

Okay, I’ve played a little of PvP and WvWvW, and whilst I understand what I’m meant to be doing, I don’t understand the actual combat itself. To me, it appears to be just a button-mashing fest. I found a group on WvWvW not too long ago and followed them into battle; it took about 5 minutes to destroy a gate before we were met with a barrage of spell/arrow/gun fire and I promptly died. When I do come across an enemy, all I do is spam my skill keys, and even then I die with ease (and they’re still on like, 2/3’s of their health). I just don’t quite understand how I’m supposed to approach the combat in these situations since I’ve only cared about solo/PvE for so long. I know me asking for help may seem silly to a lot of you, but given how much I’ve heard about people enjoying this type of content, I was under the impression there was some sort of strategy/depth involved.

Also, somewhat unrelated question; I see people with cool-looking gear all the time, and yet I’m stuck with the tripe I’m rewarded with when questing (which is 9 times out of 10 worse than I’ve already got); do you only get more varied gear once you hit 80, or am I again just playing the game wrong?

Please help this poor MMO noob out.

I’ll answer the unrelated question. The armor variety starts at 80 with some variation before 80. You can get them via Order you choose, your race tiers located in your home cities, karma armor, dungeon armor, crafted armor, etc. www.gw2armor.com is a good source for armor sets.

[VZ] Sky Avalon – Guardian (Main)
Master of all Professions
sPvP Rank Dragon – 8 Champ Titles – Ruby Division

GW2Armorgallery.com is also a good site. I believe it has more armor then gw2armor but gw2armor gives more varied photos

PvP is an entirely different beast than PvE. Most PvE enemies depend on large health pools and high damage, with one or maybe two unique abilities to combat players.

Players, however, have much more strategy, and are able to adapt rapidly to your actions. You have to think about how an enemy player will act. Merely doing damage generally won’t get you victory. You have to design your character so that you can respond to things such as stuns, dazes, conditions, and burst damage. Timing is also extremely important, as you can see when an enemy player performs an action.

Learning PvP is very frustrating in the beginning. Keep at it.

As for WvW, it really shines when you’re with a guild. A guild can teach you the ropes, and you guys can go and capture/control points together. The zerg is not much fun, as then you’re just a number adding to the zerg’s total damage output.
One thing to really keep an eye out for in WvW are siege equipment. Get out of those red circles ASAP, as siege hits very hard. Most likely, arrow carts mowed your zerg after the gates went down.

Bumping this up, because I need help.

I’m really frustrated to be honest; I just took part in the Wintersday PvP snowball arena in Lions Arch, and was attacking an enemy that had run off by himself. After what seemed like an age I finally brought him down, despite him doing more damage to me (why?!); I tried three times to finish him until someone revived him and killed me in about 5 seconds flat.

I just don’t understand how everyone’s the same level, but they do like 10x more damage to me.
