I know this topic gets asked all the time, but each case is unique, so here I am hoping someone can point me in a right direction.

I am new to GW2. I am mostly a melee person, mostly because it’s “straightforward” – get up to their faces and show them who is boss. But definitely open to trying others – GW2 so far has a very different style than your conventional melee/stealth/caster archetypes. My only character so far is a warrior, and I am enjoying him immensely. However, now I want to make another profession to co-main.

I am not an alt person, I have tried alting in many games, but I enjoy the game most when I focus on one or two characters at a time. I am a completionist, so alting usually ends up very repetitive for me. Hence this topic, since I can’t afford to level each one to 80 to pick.

I am mostly a solo player, so I’d like a profession that wouldn’t have a hard time out in the world alone. Most importantly, a profession (I keep wanting to type ‘class’) that has no problems versus skill challenge mobs and veterans, and can handle accidental overpulls. While a profession who can solo champions would be nice, they are much more fun when done with groups anyway.

I have tried a few classes, but never got past level 7 with each because they each just feels too squishy compared to my warrior. To be fair, I know I did not give any of them much of a chance to shine, but on the other hand, it felt pointless when I did not need to “wait” on my warrior to be effective out there.

So far, ruled out Guardians (looks like a defensive/support version of warrior), Ranger and Necromancer (do not like pets), but definitely open to having my mind changed.

TLDR: Would like a profession that is more engaged than a greatsword warrior (I refuse to do GS on my warrior), but not as complicated as pressing 20 buttons to kill a mob (elementalist?) – and be able to handle overpulls.

Mesmer can handle all of that… at later levels. Earlier on you are squishy and slow as all hell.

I’m going to have to say mesmer, even though I feel they don’t seem to do much damage, but mesmers can easily solo champions and are very versatile in terms of skills, they pretty much do everything.

I personally believe Necros would be better if you want to just pull the entire world and then cast wells/marks and watch things die. I used to think necros suck (well, they still kind of do) but it’s probably my 2nd favourite class to play in pve. They’re pretty durable for a cloth class, close to earth/water Ele.

Speaking of which, earth/water ele is also very durable but they don’t really do damage I feel :c then again I don’t play much mes or ele

Still, even if you don’t like guardian, they have excellent survivability. And with the right build you can roflstomp mobs/people without losing a drop of your HP.

Like swords, sorcery and misfortune?

I’m levelling one of each, but don’t have all to 80 yet so… for what it’s worth…

My Guardian is one of my favourites for PvE when it comes to “run into a bunch of things and they all die” – my Warrior is pretty good at this, but still comes in second. I can run into things that outlevel me without a second thought (unless it’s so high that you start to find that your attacks no longer hit at all).

My Engineer can drop a turret or two and use grenades to just keep pulling things over.

With the health minion thing my Necromancer does pretty well, too – I hardly ever see HP go down although I did “overpull” yesterday and die spectacularly – a bunch of at-level bandits re-spawned and loldead.

Mesmer is interesting – I’ve gotten out of worse situations than I thought a light armour class would be able to.

How you “build” will make a huge difference. You can choose skills and traits for better survivability for any class and well as avoiding a “glass cannon” build.

However, anything less than Guardian or Warrior is going to feel more “squishy” than them if you’re being directly beat upon – their abilities to survive come from obfuscation – directing the damage/attention away from themselves and onto a pet/turret/clone/et cetera. It becomes more about strategy of movement, circle strafe, dodging, using things like turrets, et cetera.

Mesmer is also really useful if you want to do things like Jumping Puzzles with something of a safety net – having a Portal ready for if you miss a jump is pretty nice, been seeing people using it all over BotFW.
