It really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to ease yourself back into the game, a less complex class like Guardian or Warrior would probably be best. Their mechanics are fairly simple to use and understand.

Race won’t matter except to the extent that you’re looking to enjoy the storyline and lore of the game.

If you’re looking for a Guild, look no farther than the Looking for… forums right here. Tons of Guilds are always advertising there.

Continuing on from azureai, the main difference with the races is their personalities.

The Char have wild west, approach. In many respects they are similar to the Norn in objectives, but while the Norn are principled, cultured and self-disciplined, the Char seem almost uncouthed and gallus.

The Char are felines who were formally under the control of their Shamen. They now proclaim they have over thrown their gods as an indication they can do anything.

In some respects, their attitude is reckless. They seem to reject metaphysics, which must be interesting. One prominent Char, Rytlock, is now an Reverent. Presumably he squares that circle in his usual style.

They live in Ascolon, an area formally controlled by humans. The humans are all dead now but continue to occupy the Char as ghosts. Unfortunately for the Char, ghosts who seem to resurrect after being destroyed.

Their society is very structured, in a military sense. Their relationship to their Warband and commanders seems to take up most of their lives. But their are also Char who are essentially free agents, Gladium. They are seen by most Char as the lowest or the orders.

You will be given an opportunity to choose to belong to a Warband or be Gladium when you create your Char character.

If I may, can I suggest you begin with and Engineer?

That seems to be the sort of thing a Char would do. It’s also quite a strong character.

I think the OP meant char as in character, not as in Charr

I am sorry I don’t have a wall of text in me right now to give on the races, especially as what will feel easy and natural to you is highly subjective. I’ll just suggest avoiding Norn and Charr at first, since they feel slower and more awkward for running and doing JPs.

For profession, warrior and guardian offer the simplest initial play, and necromancer is one of the sturdier ones. Engie, Ele, and Mesmer may be more complex than you want to deal with before you get gameplay into muscle memory.

As you used the word ‘brill’, can I assume you are British?

If so, try the Sylvari. They are voiced as Brits. I love my female Sylvari

Cheers.

Here are some useful things to know in getting started:

Your race mostly controls voice acting; while the first three episodes of the core personal story are also related to it, that is the end point of race really mattering. So, that is the best make/break point for the decision. (Well, and looks, but … those usually you see up-front.)

All classes in GW2 are viable and effective in all types of content. There are no useless classes, and while the “meta” is a nice tool for people to pretend the game is super-unbalanced, the truth is that you can complete all the content with all the classes without ever looking at the meta at all.

You can’t make “bad” choices that will haunt you forever while levelling. It’s just not an issue.

Will have to agree that race doesn’t really matter after chapter 3 of personal story, but depending on race later on in personal story you’ll encounter individuals that “might relate” to you, but for aesthetic storytelling purposes — no real value.

As for class, I’d have to put down Guardian — flexible, durable and high supportive value; though I would sidestep from theif or mesmer as your returning choice until you’ve broken some ground and become familiar with the mechanics again.
