I’ll first apologize if this is in the wrong section, i don’t really post on forums often, however I’m hoping someone can help me with this.

I purchased gw2 on release and loved pretty much everything about it, i got about 25 levels in just exploring the world and questing, but when i decided to try some group PvE/PvP elements, i found that no matter which class i was playing, because of the ability system there were certain weapon combinations that i liked, but just weren’t viable for topping dps or having good utility in PvP.

So pretty much I’m asking, is it possible to succeed while picking your weapons based on personal preference, rather than being forced to just use whatever weapons are considered “best”

It depends on your definition of “succeed”. If you mean having fun and still doing something productive than you can (and should) play with the weapons you like. However if you want to do the most damage or be the most productive your class can be than you will have to play with certain weapons. For example if you like the way mace/shield looks on a warrior than you will not get anywhere close to the dps of a greatsword.

As long as you pay attention to whatever trait setup you decide to go with and don’t make any obviously wrong decisions (e.g. speccing for one-handed weapons via traits and then only using 2-handers), you should at least be viable with whatever you want to do. Maybe not optimized, but that’s not a big deal in most contexts. If you read through the trait lines you’ll see that there are some pretty clear paths being drawn in some of them, so just pay attention and decide on the build you’re interested in. As long as you’re willing to adapt your weapons to a given build and play style (or vice versa, if you’re just that attached to a given weapon) you can make just about anything work.
