Hallo everyone, new player here. I am trying to decide which character to main. I am considering a necromancer or an elementalist. I want a character with who i will invest much time in and do everything in the game, pvp(not much ranked), pve, wvw, map, achivements. So i need your help? With which of the two i can do the most and what roles should expect to be in each game mode? Thank you all in advance.

Rangers are easy to play up through level 80. Once you get elite specialization, however, all of the other classes are stronger.

Necromancers are my favorite. Easy to play early, and once you have Reaper, they’re really hard to screw up.

Elementalists are harder to learn, but in the long run they’re one of the most powerful professions.

I think the other six professions all have higher learning curves, so I wouldn’t pick one of those six as my first (if I had to do it again).

I don’t believe anyone can give you advice for this. A main is the character you enjoy playing the most, unless you’re purely focused on rewards. Even then, the “most OP” for each game mode changes every few weeks/months. In that case, make all 9 and play the most currently OP one.

TLDR: All classes are very good at everything. Pick the fun one.

Edit: Also as to your other question, the actual role changes all the time as well based on what builds get buffed/nerfed. Ultra squishy classes often wind up as unbreakable bunkers in PvP for example.

It really, really depends on what you enjoy. My only real tip is that … you should not expect that the class you love in other MMOs is going to be the class you love here.

(eg: I typically love paladin and ranger. In almost every game, pick those, and I enjoy the class. In GW2 … nope. Necro and Thief are super-fun though. Which are usually the classes I … least enjoy, elsewhere.)

At the end of the day, all classes can do everything, and as always, the wheel of buffing and nerfing means that over time the “meta” changes. Not that it usually makes any real difference in practice, since player skill dominates, but… shrug

My advice is to make both a necromancer and an elementalist and then each time you load the game log into whichever one you feel like playing. Over time you’ll probably find you enjoy playing one of them much more than the other and you’ll have your main.

I agree with this. I have leveled multiple classes and spent time playing them each for a while. In a game like GW2 part of the fun for me is getting to know each profession, then returning to the ones I enjoy…. my only problem…. enjoy doesn’t always = being good at them :/

Time is the best cure for not being good at playing a class. With practice comes mastery.

Hello, I’ve been playing this game since launch many years ago. I know you are looking to the forums to help guide what class is a best fit for you – but I have a different recommendation. Try every class, even if you don’t have LOTS of time, there is nothing you’ll miss end game gear is relatively easy to get, especially after you’ve geared up your first character.

Every class, is welcome in every environment (with the exception of raids) and is capable of playing in the way you want to play. It’s only raids where you’re forced into specific roles/builds if you want to participate in a public group. The power creep of this game has trivialized all dungeons, fractals up to around the mid 80’s range, PvE, and unless you’re in the top 100 of the game in pvp, pvp as well.

With this in mind, I really suggest trying all classes – typically I’ve been heavy armor, front line tanks in other games – especially if it had support elements, playing things like paladin/knight roles. I hated mages/wizards/rogues. In GW2 I actually quite enjoy elementalist and necro. You can build it the way you want to play it, the just all achieve this differently.

One of the benefits I had being a player who started in launch, was that I had the freedom to create my own builds, experiment with mixing gear and finding what’s perfect for me. These days it’s mostly the recent players (past 2-3 years) that are pushing for META only builds. It really isn’t necessary once you get a grasp for how to make your own builds and what stats are optimal within that.
