Run more events. Even the ones at the very start of the area boost you forward.

Another option is to head to another race’s starting area and play there. In Divinity’s Reach there is am Asura gate that takes you to Lion’s Arch (a.k.a. LA). When you come out, you see several other gates surrounding you. They all go to the racial capitals and from there to the starter areas. (You can also use the crossed swords top right of your screen, do the PvP tutorial (no real fighting needed) and then you get a gate to LA.

If you are not gathering every tree, copper vein and plant, that also gives you both coin and experience. Or materials if you choose to craft.

There are 2 types of heart. The ones permanently on the map and the heart/shield shape that shows solid orange with a orange ring round it. Anytime those pop up do them too for good xp. Get gathering tools from the merchant if you haven’t already and gather. You’ll be glad of the materials later on and you get xp for each gather too. Do all the skill points, kill all vets and champions, explore every corner of the map including underwater. My first character was level 17 when I completed Queensdale map.

Do Hearts of other areas. On Divinity’s Reach, there is a portal to Lion’s Arch, on which there are portals to other race’s homes (The Grove for Sylvari, Black Citadel for Charr, Hoelbrak for Norn and Rata Sum for Asura). They also have areas for levels 1-15 like Queensdale for Humans.

Another is you could join the “zerg” running around Queensdale for events. This should net exp pretty fast especially on weekeneds, where there are tons of players roaming.

Other ways to gain experience are:

- Buy gathering tools and gather materials from all nodes you encounter (ore, saplings, edible plants). These are used as ingredients in crafting.

- Learn a craft or two and start developing it. This gives a significant boost to your regular character level. Crafts can be learned at the crafting stations either in any city, and in some other places, including the southwest corner of Queensdale.

- Revive other players and NPCs when they are downed.

- Explore city areas (Divinity’s Reach and Lion’s Arch are the easiest to access), discovering all waypoints and points of interest, and viewing all vistas there. Not only does this give experience, but you will receive a small boost if you complete it.
After you attain level 15, you can also complete Queensdale in the same way for a larger reward.

- Have you completed your personal story up to the point where it is on par with your current level? The number in parentheses behind the story goal in the top-right corner indicates the recommended level you should be for that story step.

- As mentioned above, participate in any and all dynamic events that happen to be running while you wander the countryside. These give good experience rewards, as well as karma and coin.
A special mention here is the balloons added to nearly all world areas for the Queen’s Jubilee event. These each start a dynamic event every 2-3 minutes.

- Try World versus World (WvW) if you are into PvP. You will be upscaled to level 80 (without all the perks like utility skills and traits). By running in the large gaggle of players running around the map like lemmings, you will earn a lot of kill credits, and experience points.

- Check you achievement tab, and see if you can complete a set of daily achievements. Typically, the things you are required to do for these already give experience, but completing the achievement gives extra experience as well.

Hearts were never meant to be your main source of experience. Dynamic events are. Hearts were added after, to keep people in places where dynamic events occur.

Hearts can only be done once, dynamic events can be repeated over and over. Don’t think of hearts as the main quest line of the game, because they’re not. There are 300 or so hearts in the game and over 1500 dynamic events.
