Server: Crystal Desert
Representing guild: Diamond Legacy
Q:
Hey everyone,
GW2 is downloading right now and I’m very excited. This game will be interesting for me to play mostly because I’m used to healing people. I still like ranged magic and controlling health in my gameplay, so I think I really like the necromancer. But I am also interested in the mesmer and the elementalist! I’m also torn between humans, sylvari, and norn (I will probably spend about an hour making my character lol).
I have a bunch of questions:
1. How many character slots do we get?
2. I live in New York City; which server/homeworld is best for me?
3. What level is a good level to start looking for a guild?
4. How often do you get to progress in your personal story?
Thanks!
A:
1. 5 slots to start, you can buy more for 800 gems each (I think at least 24 slots can be used).
2. I don’t know. I’m on EST and Tarnished Coast is great during my play time, but TC is the unofficial RP server and chock full of people. I’ve never tried another server.
3. Level 2, when you get out of training. Or, heck, start before you load the game, find websites, look for people you think are nice and see if they have room. That might answer the server question, in fact.
4. The PS seems to be scaled to fit you every two levels or so. You cannot do only it, that just doesn’t work. It’s designed to have something to do every now and then all the way to 80, culminating in a level 80 dungeon run (and followup celebration).
Another noob….
Where do people get the idea they have to address themselves as noobs on forums because they are new….
Really welcome to the game, enjoy
As noted in the second post, you get 5 slots. Quite a bit to tinker with a variety of races and classes before any need to buy more. ^..^ Torn between some races and classes? Just make em!
I haven’t seen any considerable difference in stability or latency in any of the NA servers. So, if you got any friends on a particular server, just go there.
There’s no restrictions for joining guilds, also it should be noted you can join up to 5 instead of just 1. So you aren’t stuck to just one community if you so wish.
Your personal story goes from level 1 to 80. And it has quite alot of missions during that time. So you will pretty much do it throughout the course of the game. Mind you, some areas are harder than others (some are also easy) so not all stories can be done right away. Which is a perfect time to explore, levelup and enjoy the rest of the gaming world.
And please, don’t call yourself a noob.
Newb not Noob. Obligatory definition of each.
Newb not Noob. Obligatory definition of each.
That’s kind of funny. Every game forum I’ve been on has been the complete opposite – noob/newbie is simply a new player and newb is an insult people use to imply that someone who is obviously not new is so ignorant of basic gameplay they may as well be a complete newbie.
(Apparently because the second one looks like a phonetic spelling of someone saying it sarcastically.)
As for question no. 2, Crystal Desert is a very active server for east coast players. It’s pretty full, though (apparently all the major LGBT guilds set up shop there)…you may have trouble getting on. I’m sure you’ll have fun whereever you sign onto.
Regarding races.
Most people go with human. If you want to do PVP I recommend an Asura. They are the smallest race and are most easily missed on the battlefield. By that I mean that are more difficult to see and target, the hitboxes and run speeds are the same for all races.
Aw you guys are so sweet! I edited my topic so I’m not calling myself a noob lol.
That comic was hilarious.
Wow I didn’t know you could join 5 guilds how does that work in chat?
I am very happy with the 5 character slots, I tend to be a multi-alter. I’ve made a human necromancer, then I want a sylvari elementalist and a norn mesmer. Hopefully I’ll stop at 3 characters (I probably won’t).
I’m on Crystal Desert and still have no guild but I’m like level 4 so no rush right?
I like how the personal story goes because I can do the side quests and events that pop up in the surrounding area before I go in. I am so happy I bought this game~

Despite having 5 guilds you can only ‘represent’ (having their tag beside your name) one at a time. During such you can see that guild’s chat. But there’s no restrictions being able to swap to and from clans and tags to different chats, banks and other accessibility from their services (if any).

Most people tend to have their primary guild and use the other guild member slots for special things. As a FYI, most guild will periodically wipe out any member who is normally under the Non-Represent status. (You hit Represent for your primary guild, which let’s you see Guild Chat for that guild. Also any Guild XP you earn only goes to your Represent guild, which is why people get annoyed if you’re eating space on their guild roster and not giving them anything in return.)
However some large guilds do encourage special guild membership ranks. For example, a newer system of guild rewards comes from the Guild Bounty missions. These missions will basically make you hunt down certain NPCs in the open world content, who effectivelly turn into raid bosses. Anyone who’s currently Representing with your guild will get special tokens for killing the raid mob. (Anyone else can help kill the mob, but they only get standard rewards.) I’m starting to see guilds who run Guild Bounty missions running into the situation where they invite non-guild people to join them. The hosting guild will normally have created a special guild member rank for these Bounty runs. Whenever a random person wants to tag along, they get sent a Guild Invite and have their membership set at this Bounty member setting. This makes the guest player eligable to receive the special tokens. Then once the event is over with, the guests stop Representing the host guild and switch back to their primary guild.
I’ve also heard of people using guilds as player organization tools. These additional guilds might exist as unofficial LFG PUG player pools for PvE or WvW. People would switch their Represent tags to the PUG guild and could then interact with any of the other people looking for groups. Then once they were finished, people would switch back to Representing their primary guild.
