Q:

Got GW2 since pre-beta. I haven’t played in almost 2 years until… now. I guess that makes me one of the oldest and yet one of the newest player?

I do not have HoTs. Should i wait for the next expansion (is it coming soon?) and get Hots + expansion for the same price? I remember they said any new expansion will include previous ones? I don’t want to pay twice lol.

Given that i do not have HoTs, is it worth coming back or should i just wait till the next expansion?

What should i be doing? What should i know? Anything interesting added?

You can peruse the Releases (link above) for the past two years and familiarize yourself with some of the highlights. For an in-depth review, you can read the Patch Notes accessed from the main page of the Forums.

I would install it just to be able to get living world season 3 episode 3 and above you missed the first 2

and always good to login once a day for the login reward + craft ascended materials to either craft your own stuff or sell for additonal gold.

Edit
To answer question yes you will get hot if you buy the next expansion, No we dont have a release date so I guess its atleast 1 more year before it drops.

I guess it depends on what’s more important to you, the money or the playing.

You’ll need to do some catching up, either now or then. One possible problem for late starters is if they want gliding, access to Ley lines and wallows and if those mastery lines are in HoT and not the new expansion, then late starters will be playing HoT content and maps to get those Masteries at a time when most players will be in the new expansion and maps.

This might not be a problem, what with Megaservers, but it does mean late starters might not be able to play a new expansion for a while without having to struggle to keep up with friends and guildies who have been playing all along.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

I was stuck at the same thing myself, when i game back i bought HoT and i really enjoyed it even though they made it a bit too grindy. I would recommend to buy HoT and play the current expansion, get your gear and builds updated and learn the game again.

Main thing is that if you enjoyed core game before HoT you will enjoy HoT too.

I think the best approach would be to start by just reinstalling the game and playing through it again to familiarise yourself with it and see how much you enjoy it.

HoT doesn’t make a big difference to how the game plays. It adds some stuff like gliding and elite specialisations which can be fun but if you don’t enjoy the base game you’re not going to enjoy HoT either.

Also it’s designed to be harder than the base game (even after they reduced the difficulty) because it’s aimed at people who have finished everything else, so jumping straight into HoT after not playing for years would probably be off-putting.

You might even want to start a new character, because one of the things they added is ways to explain the mechanics, different game modes and things like the wardrobe as you’re going along. Some of the early ones are frustrating (like hiding your profession skills until level 5) but some (like the level-up notifications) are useful.

Then if you find you’re really enjoying the game and you want more to do you can either buy HoT or if the new expansion has been announced by then decide if you want to wait for that.

Finally if you do decide to buy HoT I recommend you shop around. There are lots of perfectly reputable retailers who are selling it for less than the official site normally charges. (There are also lots of sites selling fake keys which won’t work or will get you banned, so go with one you trust.)
