Hi, newbie here. Ranged DPS Profession?
First off WELCOME!
Most of the forums are bias toward pvp at the moment. So I would ignore the class forums that don’t specifically say they are talking about PVE for your case.
For PVE I have not run into a problem with any of the professions running through the story and the like. End game and dungeons there will be some debate but this is more about composition of your group than what class you are.
The great thing about guild wars 2 is that you can pretty much mix it up with any class and be hat you want to be. FOr instance, you say you enjoy melee and warriors but want a ranged alternative. Well that leaves you with two solid choices: Ranger with melee weapon and ranged weapon (focus is ranged damage but can break out the melee utility when needed) OR Warrior Rifle build with your choice of melee weapon secondary.
I would recommend making a character of each and doing the “tutorial area” then jumping into your hero panel —> pvp —> go to heart of mists to see what they are like in their entirety (as going to the heart of mists gives you a lvl 80 char with the ability to try out different weapons and builds).
Hey there and welcome!
As BakBakaa told before, Ranger with some melee second weapon is great. I play myself a Longbow Ranger with a Greatsword. My focus is mainly at the bow but when needed and when the enemy gets too close, i take out the Greatsword and just chop them to pieces. Keep in mind that your ranger has not the armor and hp off a warrior so don’t rush into a heap off mobs. That’s a fast ticket to the graveyard
About the advice to go to the Mist, its true that you can check out how your char is at lvl80, but keep in mind that if you are new to the game that it is a lot to take in and to understand to make a solid decision about your proffesion.
Take care, check some profs out and by all, have fun in Tyria!

Any class forum you go to is going to have a list of negative post . Players are never happy with whats skill they are given . Most being hardcore pvp they are very stat driven so even a 1/4 sec nerf to them is uncalled for. In hardcore pvp that 1/4 sec. can be the difference of life or death . Since your not hardcore none of it should matter the ranger is a great class and for me the most fun . I also play a neco another so call broken class and had a great time leveling him 80.
I just want to echo the sentiment that you should give the classes a try rather than giving too much weight to the negative posts on the forums. My ranger has almost cured my altitis – I got her up to 80 without even trying. There are some bugs with certain skills, but I haven’t found them to interfere too much with PVE.
The main difference between rangers and warriors as ranged DPS
- warriors have heavy armor, rangers have medium so I think the ranger is more focused on evasion/debuffing and the warrior is more focused on buffing/defense
- warriors have many abilities that directly help allies, rangers just have a few (edit – that are worthwhile. I found the spirits sort of useless)
- rangers can do many combos solo, warriors only have a couple
- rangers have pets (which have skills that also help with combos)
- rangers use longbows, shortbows, and axes for range, warriors use rifles and longbows
I like the pet mechanic. Your choice of pet complements your build and you get to roam the world looking for new pets to tame. I tend to micro-manage my pet, so I don’t see the same problems a lot of folks complain about in the forums.
I have only played the warrior up to level 15. My impression was that I would likely play a warrior as mostly melee and switch to ranged in certain situations. I play the ranger as all ranged, although I did try a melee weapon on my swap for a while. It’s really what you enjoy.
He might start thinking he knows what’s right for you.

Besides, the game is new. You don’t know what changes/adds will be implemented in the future. It can get better, it can get worse. What matters is that YOU have a fun time playing it.
So, ignore the whiners. Try it and decide for yourself if you think it’s fun or not
Welcome!
A neat feature of GW2 is that all classes have some ranged functions! The ranger is the standard archetype for this however each class has unique ranged abilities.
I play a Necromancer and play as much ranged as I do melee. Both are fun and have their own challenges and play style. My advice would be to try each class out for 5 to 10 levels to get a feel for them and then select the one that best fits your play style.
:)
Feed them and they multiply.
Please do not feed them.
I just can’t get into GW2.
I have tried out a few characters this week; Human Ranger, Norn Warrior, and finally a Asura Engineer. I just don’t think this game is for me and I can’t find the strength to log in. The world looks nice, but there is nothing new here that any other MMO already has to offer. I much prefer MMO’s with an established IP.
See you all in another MMO
Such a shame OP to have given up after just a week. I don’t know how many levels you played your various characters for but I didn’t really get the feel for mine until about level 30. Until that point I was swapping between various alts trying to decide which one felt right as my main.
