I’m new to Guildwars, but bare with me.

I am an altaholic, and I haven’t gotten past level 40 yet. I decided to try out a sylvari engineer, and when you start a new character, you obviously need to do the starting event. (Sylvari it would be the dragon when you’re inside the dream). However, I noticed someone one-shotting all the enemies, and it appeared to be a level 32 sylvari engineer.

How is this possible? I thought these events were phased and you could never return to them again?

I have a screenshot attached.

Any ideas how this is possible?

(Apologies if this is a noob question! I am just confused)

It’s possible because the enemies in those areas give you XP.

They’ve never left the starting instance and have been levelling up extremely slowly. There’s someone in the human one on Desolation doing the same thing, he was level 65 last time I looked.

People did it in GW1 as well, there was even a title for it – Legendary Defender of Ascalon. It made more sense to me there because the tutorial area was much bigger (all of GW2’s Plains of Ashford basically) and it was much more challenging, until recently you needed to use a few tricks, as well as a lot of time, to pull it off.

Weird … I guess there is no downscaling in there. You still get experience and there are infinite spawn. Most importantly in GW2 your experience per kill is based on the character’s level rather than the mobs level(mostly) and the loot will scale as well so they would also be getting gear upgrades.

If someone is willing to stand around the tutorial killing the same thing over and over again, getting to 32 shouldn’t be very difficult or take very long. It does not seem very efficient though.

You don’t get any loot in the starting instances. I can’t remember when they changed it but it was fairly early on because of people farming there.

Although you can recieve items by mail, so you’re not permenantly stuck with your starting gear.

That sounds really boring. I had a character farming low level mats in the starting instance back when they allowed that and it took FOREVER to level up. I can’t imagine staying in there to level, especially if there is no title to be gained by doing it.

I think some people like to do things like this just to find out if they can.

Same way I like trying to climb the scenery even when it’s not part of a puzzle and love it when I do things like get up onto the cliffs above Mabon Market, even though there is absolutely no reward for doing so and I didn’t even get any XP the entire time because there are no enemies up there.

That’s putting it mildly. Back in Ragnarok Online in ages past, some masochistic people liked to level novices all the way to the cap. It was so brutal and popular that it even spawned the Super Novice class. The different there however was that people got bragging rights.. this right here is just flat out lunacy.

Maybe it is a bot and they think the safest, least suspecting place Anet will find them is in the starting maps.

I can’t see why a bot would do it. Bots are there to farm for money and you don’t get any drops in the starter instances.

I doubt botters worry about farming pre 80. They likely just want it to get to 80 with as little suspicion as possible. The less reports on the road to 80, the less likely they are to pop up on the radar. Makes much more sense for it to be a bot then for it to be a player. Then again, I often underestimate the sheer insanity some people manage to muster… Still, that seems like behavior reserved for a player that’s been playing for years, not 6 months.

Well it’s not as if there’s anything else to do, and he can hit 80, take SSs, and post pictures all over the place. Bragging right, yo
