I’m relatively a new GW2 player even though I have been playing since the head start. (My highest level character is lvl 44)

I pretty much understand most of the basic concepts of the game but the problem I have is making money. I rarely buy gear or anything on the trading post (I mostly have karma gear) but on all of the characters I have leveled I have barely had 1 gold by the time I reach level 40.

In most MMOs that I have played you can actually sell the greens etc that you find as world drops for cash. But in GW2 the Trading Post is flooded with every item to the point where the prices are the same as vendoring the items.

The crafting system requires a ridiculous amount of mats so I havent really had luck selling gathering mats since the AH is also flooded with these items but I use most of them anyway tailoring. (I picked tailoring to be able to afford bigger bags since I didnt have enough cash to buy them on the TP)

So what is the secret to actually making cash in this game? Do I just need to be higher level or what? In most other MMOs I have played (I’ve played almost all of them over the years) I havent really had cash flow issues and I enjoy crafting/trading to make money. But in GW2 between having to buy gathering tools and high repair costs (ya ya I know dont die but my main is an elementalist they die a lot) I cant really seem to stack up any cash.

Do you really have to do a ridiculous amount of farming to gain money in this game?

I found I barely made any money leveling up either. I would typically have enough to buy the skill books as long as I didn’t purchase anything. It’s kind of “just the way it is.”
While you’re leveling just worry about having what you need =P
Once you’re 80 you can make money several different ways.

I don’t believe you get cash if you chose to deposit all
collectibles in your inventory. So perhaps by not doing that, but
instead selling items at vendors, then you’ll get cash. Completing
areas/zones is also a good way.

I just recently started playing, my highest level char is 26. I’ve made purchases at the TH. Have not put anything on the TH, have only been selling to vendors. And I have a little over 2g already….. I know that doesn’t help you any, but I haven’t done anything “special” to get what I have.

Hey, well I’m currently a level 58 thief and found it hard at first to make a bit of cash etc. Reached my first 1g not so long ago but then started realising all the things I was farming from loots and the stuff i was collecting from herbs and trees etc was worth a nice bit of cash! I turned to my bank to look for these items of such and found alot of them and sold and now I have around 5g, which isn’t too much at the moment but enough for armors etc.

My wife recently hit 40 and I happened to glance at her screen—she has almost 10g.

She sells a lot of loot on the TP, and for near vendor rates (sometimes below with the TP cut). She does this when she runs out of inventory space.

Every time she visits a vendor, she sells the junk and, item-by-item, checks to see the going rate on the TP. If the TP is more profitable than a vendor, it goes on the TP, otherwise it goes to the vendor.

She salvages all items of white quality for crafting materials. These she stockpiles, she does not sell them. She has ~6 stacks of copper ore laying around.

I tend to just unload the majority of items at a vendor and sell off crafting materials I have in abundance. I have less money than she does, but I also have near full-exotics (missing 1 accessory and my second weapon set) and a much more robust collection of fine and rare crafting materials. I might only have a few gold, but I also don’t really need it for anything, so I haven’t gone out of my way to make more.

(1) Stop tailoring.

(2) Sell your cloth. Sell most of your other crafting mats if money is your current concern. While leveling, only craft for the XP.

(3) Do heart points. These are your major source of leveling income.

(4) Don’t teleport everywhere. Walk whenever possible. Remember that you can log out in the field and many zones have crafting areas where you can access your bank as well as trade post NPCs should you need to buy or sell something.

(5) Buy bags, don’t make them. It’s a waste of money to craft them – your crafting materials are worth a lot more than the bags sell for. Side note – all armor-crafters can make bags, and tailors make some of the most expensive ones. Leatherworker makes the cheapest ones, generally.

(6) Do events. You get money for events.

(7) Don’t WvW. The repair costs and blueprint costs are a drain unless you’re in a good, organized group. Once you hit 80, things will change.

(8)Sell unidentified dyes, sigils, and similar frills at the trade post.

(9) Don’t be afraid to buy stuff on the trade post if your gear is getting out-of-date. Killing mobs faster is going to be good for your bottom line, and the blue-quality gear is very cheap. It’s an investment – don’t overdo it, but don’t run around with a weapon that is more than 5 levels out of date.

one of the best ways is to be a supplier rather than a crafter. I learned the hard way, by crafting on my first character. I only started saving money at level 80.

I also do what Fildydarie’s wife does – sell junk at vendor then check the TP for the going rate of other items and the sigils applied to them (if i have a BLTC salvage kit on hand) before deciding to vendor them. It’s really nice that they’ve started showing the “projected profit” because that makes me not have to do math.

At your lvl, I’d highly recommend doing the chain events at Harathi Hinterlands located at the NW corner. Events happen in a row, lots of defense type events = good number of farms, and the timer for the event to repeat is not long- at least in my server.

Sell/TP everything you don’t use. Salvage white items. Gather. Do a lot of events, and all hearts.

I’m not broke, but not rich. I spend alot on dyes though.

If you’re Salvaging every item you pick up- DON"T. Salavage the slavage items (“Srap of fur” etc) and maybe Whites.

Sell any Greens and Blues your not going to use to the Vendors (or the TP if you can get a good price). As many, many people have said before me- Salvaging these items nets you a few coppers worth f Mats while Selling them is usually worth many times more.

For better then Blue/green items the rules change. But these items are not worth salavaging and you will start to see more money once u start vendoring them.

Just complete maps. As you go through them you get coin from selling everything from monster drops, collectibles you find or farm, rewards from events, and last but not least the reward for actually completing the map. You get silvers, 40 of a mat appropriate to that map level, a mystic coin, and 2 armors or weapons that can be blues, greens, rare, or exotic. So as you work towards 100% world completion money should not be an issue.

Your crafting is a money sink OP. Just vendor anything that isn’t an upgrade that you wear or fight with. Check greens to see if they are asking more than vendor price and don’t forget about the -15% list/sell fee.

Gather everything, everywhere you go. Auction everything not associated with your chosen craft. Sell at the lowest competitors asking price and it should sell within minutes.

just wanted to add if you’re crafting because ou want to be able to craft your own gear / weps and / or for legendary making purposes, by all means, go for it but don’t see it as a means o fmoney making. least not at this point in time. although when you get to masterwork and rares / exotics, certain items can sell for quite a bit, but you should also take into the mats that went into them. if you’re going to be crafting anyways, then just sell the desirable items on TP, or if they don’t then vendor or salvage (monthly achievement or get some basic mats back but not very cost efficient).

though with regards to tailoring, i feel it’s definitely more “valuable” to seel those mats and/or salvage them for chance of rare cloth mats (lvl 80, etc for gossamer / silk etc). but i want to go for the legendary shield, which requires my tailor to be lvl 400 so i’m leveling mine.
