I want to get into WvW. I understand the basics, but I’m only level 40, and am wondering about a couple things.

How do I get geared up for WvW? I’m a year behind everyone else, and I’m sure a lot of people out there are going to have some pretty amazing gear, and I’m just going to get rolled. Should I wait till I’m 80, and get some end game dungeon gear before I bother with WvW? What’s the best way to go about getting PvP gear for WvW?

Should I mainly stick with zergs until I get my WvW level up? What does my WvW level do for me?

I had a couple other questions, but now my mind is blanking. I’m basically just needing to know how a complete noob would start dipping his toes into WvW. The best way to go about it.

Thanks!

Gearing depends on your build, which you won’t really come into till you hit 60-80. You will get up-leveled till then, but that is visible to opponents who would consider you an easy target. One of the nice things is that you can gear up pretty much instantly at 80 if you have the gold/karma, so you don’t have to worry about that, and WvW builds/tactics shift after most patches.

If you want to WvW pre-80, Zergs are probably your best bet. WvW exp gives you points to improve different aspects of WvW, such as dealing more seige damage, improving defense against NPCs in WvW, and increasing your effectiveness in building/repairing the environment. I wouldn’t worry too much about them as you’ll get them in time, but group play will undoubtedly net you more points than solo roaming.

Some small tips:

-always carry a condition removal ability
-always carry a stun break ability
-avoid glass cannon builds (no defense at all)
-take supply from supply camps only unless instructed
-the blue arrows on the maps are commander players, and generally lead the battles as people will congregate to them (anyone can become a commander, so don’t expect them to be great at leading a force just because they have the tag)
-white crossed swords on a location indicates it is under attack, orange crossed swords in open areas indicates a large skirmish of players
-explore the maps, people will often call out locations of battles, it is wise to memorize them

Sticking to a zerg would be a good start but dont be shy; you can run around with smaller groups and take a supply camp or convince the mercenary camps to help your side out. Just be careful of enemies especially if youre outnumbered obviously. Since youre level is raised to approx. 80 you shouldnt have too much trouble fitting in, and youll get gear along the way like you do in PvE I guess.
The WvW level provides small bonuses provided you put the points they give into trait lines. These are accessed through the WvWvW menu. It’s things like take 2% less damage from siege or guards, deal more damage with siege weaponry X,…

Over a year and the forum search is still broken = /

Simply get there and start fighting You can level to 80 inside WvW if you want to.

Stick to larger groups of players, don’t run around by yourself, until you know how to avoid or fight other players.

Some servers have huge organized WvW communities, see if yours is one of them. It really helps to work with others.

How do I get geared up for WvW? I’m a year behind everyone else, and I’m sure a lot of people out there are going to have some pretty amazing gear, and I’m just going to get rolled. The beauty of Guild Wars 2 is that, even if somebody has 4,000 hours into a character, getting full Level 80 Exotic gear isn’t hard. The “basic” set you should aim to start with will be Soldier items, i.e. main stat Power, minor stats Toughness and Vitality; alternatively there is also Dire items, i.e. main stat Condition Damage, minor stats Toughness and Vitality.

Soldier weapons and armour can be obtained with Dungeon tokens (Ascalonian Catacombs, Sorrow’s Embrace and Honour of the Wind dungeon tokens, to be specific), Karma (from the vendors at the various Orrian Temples) and Badges of Honour (vendors in WvW). You can also find Soldier-type weapons and trinkets in the Black Lion Trading Post. The reason these are the “basic” for WvW is due the survivability it provides, while still allowing you do deal decent damage. While it won’t allow you your 16k Kill Shot, it’ll allow you great survivability in team fights.

Dire armour is harder to come by since the only way to get them, as of this post, is with tokens from Crucible of Eternity; weapons can be found in the Trading Post, thanks to the new crafting recipes. If you still fancy playing a Condition Damage build, the alternative stat set is Rabid, i.e. main stat Condition Damage, minor stats Precision and Toughness. These can be obtained with Dungeon tokens (Caudecus’ Manor, Twilight Arbor and Ruined City of Arah) and Badges of Honour.

However, that’s not to say you can’t effectively participate in WvW before level 80! All it requires is that you follow the same gearing guidelines, i.e. prioritising survivability. A quick fix would be to look up the Black Lion Trading Post for some items with stats similar to Soldier’s and Dire, even if Blue or Green tier. Simply kitting your character out appropriately will make a world of difference (same logic applies for pre-80 dungeon runs).

Besides gear, you’ll typically need to gain access to your server’s voice communications, be it Teamspeak, Raidcall, Ventrillo or Mumble. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a microphone or simply don’t want to talk to people. What matters is that you listen in to team communications, especially the Commander you are following. Knowing where to go, when to charge, when to retreat, what to shoot, who to look out for is crucial if you don’t want to die alone amidst a sea of enemies. Even if you don’t want to speak up, alerting people through map (/m) or team (/t) chat to enemy movements, especially when they are besieging a keep or tower, is equally important.

Of course, this is all in the perspective of someone who enjoys team effort. If you think running around in a zerg while dominating PPT is for skilless leeches and prefer roaming duels, you can look up some videos and guides in your appropriate profession forum.

WvW vendors provide perfectly good PvP gear for karma (for low level characters like yours). This is the Invader set and the nerest vendor is in your borderland’s Citadel at the end of the hall opposite the Asura gates.
These need to be upgraded every 5 levels. You will be offered the right gear automatically but you MUST keep it up-to-date because the up-scaling depends on it.

There are also high-level vendors offering exotic gear in a variety of stats. for honour and gold.

You will also need trinkets, runes and sigils appropriate to your level.

Don’t wait till you are 80 – jump right in. Your gear and stats (if current) will be upgraded to 80 to make you competitive and providing you stay with the zerg until you feel confident, you will be fine.

You will earn vast amounts of karma which will be more than enough to feed your gear progression.
