I’ve played SAB a lot, I haven’t been counting how many times I’ve completed each zone but I’ve done them all multiple times, in both infantile and normal mode (mainly normal).

I’ve never gotten a weapon box, which I didn’t think was anything exceptional until I saw people complaining that they just did 3 zones in a row and didn’t get one – implying that they expect at least a 33% drop rate.

I’m just wondering if I’ve had exceptionally bad luck or if other people are over-estimating the drop rate. I know it’s random, but if people can reasonably expect to get one every 3 zones or so I really should have gotten at least 1 by now.

Alternatively do they only drop in tribulation mode?

The weapon boxes are not common. I actually got one from my first end chest in the Festival, but I didn’t get any in the two Super Adventure Box releases before that which I played extensively.

They do not drop only in Tribulation Mode, no.

According to the wiki (and sourced from a dev post) the drop rate on the weapon boxes is 2%. This is from opening the end level chest.

So yeah, pretty darn rare.

People will always complain about not getting enough drops regardless. Never use player complaints as a gauge of item rarity.

The boxes are fairly rare, but not as rare as a lot of the other rare drops out there. 2% isn’t great, but its not abysmal either.

Anyone complaining that they aren’t dropping after 3 levels has clearly forgotten which game they are playing. You’re supposed to be having fun, not getting ridiculous rich daily.
