Q:

I was playing Sorrow’s Embrace today and we were halfway through the dungeon when the team decided to kick a guy for apparently no reason. They said he’d do no damage using his flamethrower and that he would not rez (which is not true) and that the “guild was more important” since shortly after a guildmate of them joined.
I’ve heard of this before and I know that this is unacceptable. I reported them ingame for scamming but I also did a screenshot of the group after he got kicked, so how do I use this in order to get the attention to them?
Oh rigth the screenshot is in german, sorry for that. (I just didn’t feel like posting this in the german forum since the support isn’t as good as here.)

A:

From Gail as part of a thread in the Account Issues forum:
Kicked from a dungeon how to report people

Secondly, if you have screenshots proving abuse by another player, you should feel free to contact Support by filing a ticket through the “Ask a Question” tab on that linked page. Attach your screenshots, and provide the time, timezone, and date the issue occurred. They can look into the matter and take whatever action is appropriate in this particularly situation.

(I edited it to the relevant portion – click to go to the full thread for context).

If a guild has the majority of players in that group with only a couple of pick-ups? Technically, its their group to do what they want with. Not saying I’d have handled it the same way…but I might have. Depends on the circumstances.

But it sounds like to me that they had an incoming guild member and they decided to kick the pick-up that was contributing the least.

But I don’t think its a reportable offense.

Hmmm….didn’t know that. So, hypothetically, you pick up a player? Nobody knows him/her..but into the dungeon, you find they are dragging the group down. What now? Keep playing with someone who isn’t listening or trying?

Just because they report you for kicking them doesn’t mean ANet will automatically punish you. I think it doesn’t take an hour to figure out that a particular player isn’t a good fit for your group. If you act in good faith, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

So reportable, but not necessarily punishable. Judgment call on ANet’s part then. I would wager there would have to be some sort of text verbal abuse prior to or during the dungeon run to make it punishable. And I agree in that context that it probably ought to be.

I don’t agree, however, that any/all players should have the ability to breeze through a dungeon while everyone else is fighting their kittens off…just because of some sort un-defineable rule about group make-up and mgmt.

I agree it should cut both ways – folks that sponge off of good dungeon teams should be just as “reportable”. If there was a pick-up on my team that was AFK a lot or what-have-you, and we told them if they didn’t get their act together, we were going to kick them and they persisted in their bad behavior, I wouldn’t hesitate to kick them. I’d also screenshot that conversation though.

Incidentally, flamethrower kit is awful. If I see a “flamethrower engy” on our PUG member in a serious dungeon they better be packing some REALLY good gear to get their damage up or they get booted at the door and then nobody can complain it happened unfairly.

Speaking as an engy, if you’re relying on flame-thrower kit for doing all your damage, you are doing it WRONG in every way possible; you’re a dis-service to your team (Engy’s have an amazing array of control and support skills) and you’re a disservice to yourself (you’re failing to reach your damage/survivability potential by a long shot), if you arn’t going to pull your weight in a dungeon then someone else is carrying you and I’m not surprised if they say “no”

If you pulled this stunt in any of the groups I was in you would be looking for 2 replacements instead of 1 replacement for the engineer.

The whole attitude that your gear is wrong or your spec is wrong doesn’t fit this game well at all.

You won’t have many willing to help your groups once word gets around. Its the attitude that will hurt your groups in the long run more than anyones spec on how they play their characters.

Well said, mate!

@Ryuujin
Providing advice and constructive help to a player to improve their skills to benefit the group is one thing.
Bullying someone into playing the way you think they should play is entirely different…

It’s all about the attitude ….

@Raf They only said he was dragging the group down, which he was definately NOT.
they were looking for a reason to kick him, when it didn’t work out since i told them that he was rezzing like crazy, then they said: “guild is more important” by the way, the german support is apparently incapable of doing anything since it’s not “against their rules”…what to do?

@Ryuujin We were doing very fine before that. Everyone was helping each other, everyone did all the damage we could do and we were fine, I think it shouldn’t be a reason to kick someone for using flamethrower (which he didn’t do all the time, just sometimes) so there was actually no reason at all for a kickvote.

There’s a difference between bullying someone into playing “a certain way”, and playing in a way that is incredibly inefficient. I would never tell someone to use a specific build, nor outlaw a specific item.

The flamethrower engy is phenomena very specific to engineers for some reason. No class in the game works well when they stick to just one weapon or kit, switching skills to extend your repetoire is the underlying mechanic of every class in the game.

Imagine a warrior who refuses to use a ranged weapon when faced with an enemy that can’t be hit in melee because he’s a “sword warrior”, or an elementalist who refuses to switch out of fire attunement even when all his skills are on cooldown and the target is fire resistant because he’s a “fire ele” – you don’t have to switch builds, you just have to switch your weapon out for something appropriate to the situation.

Flamethrower is a kit that is inappropriate in 90% of situations (it only really starts to shine when 4 or more enemies are bundled up in a tight bunch), even then you should switch out of flamethrower now and then to thrown in some support skills like smoke bombs or flash or freeze grenades. When you see an engineer using flamethrower all the time, every time they are no better then the fire ele or a sword warrior, and speaking as an engineer myself I feel i have the right to call bullkitten when I see an engineer do that.

HOWEVER, I’ll also agree that if you’d gotten that far into the dungeon it probably wasn’t nessecary to kick that guy unless you were having serious difficulty and needed a more proficient player to continue
