How do I kill mesmers?
Mesmers are really hard to fight right now because everything is new, give it some time and I guarantee you people will figure out the mesmers tricks and how to distinguish clones. I am actually worried for this as this is the whole class and the only thing we have, but we shall see.
Edit: lol autocorrect keeps changing mesmers into leakers wtf

he cant run, he does not have teh speed and mesmer stealth is pretty short, so just look round for him, Its not like he is a thief who can stealth for ages and then speed away so no one can catch him….and has imba burst dmg.
The mesmer just sounds like a really good player.
It’s true we can totally 2 shot everything and like super heal to full every 3 seconds. Oh wait we can’t do anything that you described and all our stealth abilities have very lengthy cooldowns. Our 2 ability in the downstate only keeps us invisible for a couple of seconds, you can get your health up to about 65% before it wears off but that’s it.
We also have a downed enemy marker above our head if it’s really us and not the clone it leaves behind.
Honestly it sounds like you had no idea how to handle a mesmer and expected to faceroll a squishy caster.
You guys were doing something very wrong. Yes a mesmer downed ability is to leave a down clone and steath for a couple of seconds… even if you stomped the clone you have plenty of time to stomp the real mesmer who is only a few meters away before he can rally. Unless he managed to kill a weakened mob or one of you he can’t rally that fast. Also a tip… killing illusions instead of the real mesmer is what we want you to do.
Thief here and I can find the real one pretty fast. I have a candy eye for the real one, just continue to play.
Mesmers for me, while annoying, finding the real one is usually the furthest back and they die pretty fast.
@Paradox Angel
What he said.
The furthest back is the player. Attack it. Funny because you can be sure, be it Thief or Mesmer, that the one place the enemy is NOT, is right under you.
This makes me hope Mesmers learn to teleport right under the big Charr character to heal up.
Warrior here..(maybe good).
No issues with mez. One of the easiest frags for me.
You guys must of been terrible.
Agree with this.
I’m an ele an have no problems taking out mesmers.
What where u guys doing? o.0 Never had that problem before.
Mesmers can be tricky depending on your class, I predominately play a support Guardian and Power Ranger in Spvp. I often find the best strat is to nuke down any illusions they pop up (duelist, warlock, warrior). AOE is often effective here as even buffed they have low HP and don’t move out of AOE attacks. Without their damage dealing illusions many Mesmers are almost harmless.
After that its a case of find the real Mesmer this is simply a matter of practice and trial and error. The real Mesmer will doge role and often move in a disjointed manner. Furthermore when you do find them their innately squishy so blow CD’s and nuke before they do a disappearing act.

I play a number of classes, Thief and Mesmer are by far my favorite.
The trick to beating a Mesmer, is too play as one. The big thing about finding out which is the real deal, is to watch what each ‘Illusion’ is doing. The illusion summoned you can tell apart because the original Mesmer will dissapear JUST before the fake appears, if I were you, I would just keep stomping the one which is further away because it teleport the real Mesmer away. The Sorcerer illusion will stand there using an auto attack making no effort too dodge. The bezerker will stand still and occasionally use it’s spin attack, etc. You will know the real deal because they will dodge, use multiple spells, switch weapons. It really isn’t as hard as some people think
Hope this helped

You’re describing phantasms here. Phantasms do not look like us nor do they have our name. I really hope no one is confusing Illusionary Duelist for me.

Your right I was just trying to save time, I got alot of names wrong in that ><…
Phantasm Leap which summons the illusion that attacks the foe with a sword, can’t distinguish it from the real Mesmer looks wise, BUT it can be via what it does. Like I mentioned in the previous post, also if it makes a big puff of purple smoke, it means the Mesmer has switched places with it, so the person you though was the Fake, is now the real one… It get’s kinda confusing, i’m trying to help, but it is just second nature too me so I don’t think too much about it XD
I edited my original post about how to deal with Downed illusions :P

No worries. The above is pretty much all you need to know about us. Our clones are stationary and very, very stupid. Everything we have has a tell, once people encounter us a few times I don’t think they’ll struggle at all with our abilities.

Exactly, i’m worried when the day will come when our tricks no longer work haha.
And people should be wary of the Phantasm Thief we can summon when downed, can easily backstab 6k+ You will spot it easily, because it’s a phantasm of course, but still if your on low health after a fight with a Mesmer, it can easily finish you off!
I really wish shatters were more useful outside of sword builds :/
Here’s a huge tip and something I’m totally hating on my Mesmer: about 80% of Mesmers in PvP will dual wield, and clones don’t wield off-hand weapons - so just attack the one carrying the giant flaming torch, sword, etc. in their off-hand.
It’s really unfair imo that clones don’t dual wield, it really makes the game favour 2-h weapon Mesmers, and I’m hoping they fix that issue soon. :P
Lol I knew this was going to get posted eventually.
As a Mesmer I can absolutely assure you we are not OP. The player you fought was just very skilled. I’ve seen Guardians stand up against 3 people without a problem at all. I’ve also seen a warrior do similar. I honestly do not believe any class in this game is OP there is just so much room for skill to override class.
I promise you put any class in a skilled players hands, and they could beat a slew of people without a second thought.
I agree with the consensus that it was probably just a lack of skill and knowledge on your teams part. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no pro at this game, but every class has their weakness. Mesmer’s are great at confusing enemies and soaking up damage, however they can’t dish it very well, so figuring out which mesmer is the real one will win you the fight the quicker you do it.
If there’s three people attacking one mesmer, make sure to utilize the targeting mechanic of the game (ctrl-T). Everyone in the party will see it, and then you can focus down the real one. Also, as other people have mentioned, the illusions have their “tells”. They don’t dual wield, they also appear to have poor AI. Once you face more mesmers, you’ll figure out how to deal with them in no time.
Good luck!
Can they control that illusions? Like in an rts? Probably not. They probably are just running at you like an stupid npc mob? Never fought against Mesmer 1 vs1 and can’t pay that much attention but should it now be like that?
Then if he really got stealth and you said it was short then just look around if you feel like only an illusion is attacking you. They probably have no special skills and it it should be possible to notice illusions. Or is this not possible that easy? If stealth was really that short and he is nearby you should attack him. If not then attack the illusion and search for him later. Or how does this work? … Maybe I need to play one myself to understand this. Hard to understand if you don’t play the class yourself. That’s why probably everyone is having problems with such an unusual class you probably never had in that many other MMORPGs.
Edit: Also I saw someone in the castle looking like a player. But they should not be able to get in right? While the others are outside still attacking the gate which is not broken. Was this Mesmer illusion then? I know for example I can throw turrets as engineer at the wall where the enemies are standing to they Mesmer probably did something similar.

We can’t throw our illusions, nor control them and we can’t stealth every quarter second like OP would have you believe. We’re an outstanding 1v1 or small teamfight class and god awful at everything else atm.
Our weapon skills spawn 1 clone per cooldown usually and need to be paired with a stealth utility like decoy to actually confuse anyone. Marking us (control left click) will ruin our ability to hide in our illusions after we exhaust decoy veil and the like.
As for the player inside the castle, our scepter spawns a clone every 3 attacks, the clone is placed in melee range instead of near the mesmer like our other clone producing abilities. Seriously just sneeze on it and it’ll go poof.
ctrl-t?

I honestly think that it’ll take some time for people to come up with effective strategies to counter Mesmers. They specialize in PvP imo.
either works, actually have to change my push to to talk key for PvP (left ctrl) as I mark EVERYTHING when i’m trying to talk
Mesmer has light armor and low dps, he has nothing left but tricks to survive.
The Mesmer that is doing more than the basic spam attack motions and moves around is the real Mesmer.
Roll a Signent of Malice/Dagger storm Theif, makes lunch out of Mesmers because of their illusions.

I don’t know if this mesmer I ran into in WvW had a fantastic build that I have yet to discover or what, but as a mesmer myself, I did not understand how they constantly had 3 illusions up. And even when I was completely sure which was them, I was wrong. I would almost call hacks if I wasn’t too prideful to give them such a compliment. But whatever they were doing was amazing.

you weren’t figthing a sylvair mesmer from Desoltation were you?
Whenever I run into people in WvWvW when they are alone or as a pair I jump in to attack them, using a mobile build with blink and clone summon on dodge, and phased retreat, I can keep myself moving all over the place, and keep 3 clones up no problem. With 3 clones up my heals are pretty strong and I am stacking conditions on you really quick.
You’d be supprised how many people lose track of which is me. Yes sure, its easy on paper to say that one is me, try it when I am pounding away at your health bar, dodging, teleporting and laying down chaos storms on you. Gets a tadge more trickly then. And with timewarp I can usually nuke one player down very quickly in a 2v1, stun the other player and finish the first off. Then its one on one….or rahter 4 on one with my clones out. Even a tiny amount of time forcing you to think which is me, is less incomming dmg to me and more of you health pool gone.
Mesmer being down are the only time I think they are OP. As the original post said how he killed multiple down clones and to have the Mesmer pop up with full health, this happens every time I play. They shouldn’t be able to make so many clones while their down, this almost guarantees them to get back up. As a Guardian all I have when I’m down is a knock back and a heal that takes like 20 seconds before it can be used, so when I’m down I am basically screwed. So if they just fix their down state, Mesmers will be perfect, because at this point you pretty much cant kill them unless its like 4 on 1.
Except you’re exaggerating and our only clone generator during a downstate is our 2. This makes a grand total of……. ONE CLONE 1 uno however you want to say it. We have the red marker over our head for downed player regardless of whether or not it’s out too. The stealth lets a nearby ally get a rez off if they’re paying attention and you’re not.
If you stand there and channel the finish animation on something without Giant Red Arrow that’s your bad. The phantasmal rogue that we can conjure does too much damage if we’re allowed to get it off is the only point I’ll concede. Do not stand there and try to kill us with abilities in our down state either. We want to you to try and power through confusion.
Look for Giant Red Arrow stomp and move on, it’s really not that hard.
stomping mesmers is actually pretty easy. You just need to know how his illusion work adn yea… looking for Giand Red Arrow helps alot. Also if the mesmer is trying to heal – you see him arround a blue buble while his clone is doing only downed animation.

You get to keep the clones you had up from before when you went down, plus you can clone while down, and your clone recharges fast. So you can have a downed clone of yourself, 3 attacking clones, and yourself. That easily gets to enough attack power to kill any one. and when your coming off a 1 v 1 battle and your enemy already has low health, it makes itkittennear impossible to win that fight. Mesmers cloning may be all it has, but all it has is what makes the class OP, and that would explain why there is at least 2 mesmers per team every game.
Big Red Arrow disappears when we cloak. I’ve several times beaten 1v2 scenarios. In sPVP only class I have a problem with is thieves thats it and even that is win some lose some. I pump out so much confusion on enemy player that he kills himselves. Mesmers aren’t the high big damage class we just outlast other people.
Are we OP no….I think it’s cloak and deceive class. And personally the Mesmer down state isn’t OP by far that goes to Thieves with Elementalist on the easy kill while down state
Mesmer being down are the only time I think they are OP.
Oh but now we’re including my entire kit in this discussion and now the class not their downed state is OP. What exactly are you trying to argue here?
Fine, I’ll bite. Why on earth did you let me have 3 phantasms for that long? They’re the bulk of our damage everything else is pitiful if you’re have trouble with the build I think you’re describing. The problem you’re running into is you’re sticking around in one area too long. If you fight us in a small area phantasm damage will rip you shreds while you chase me. You’ll live longer if you blow the phantasms up, but I gain distance if you do that.
So here’s what you do, run. No really run, our phantasms have horribly stupid AI they’ll just stand there in between attacks. I cannot chase you but in a point defense game advantage me because you can’t let me have that point either. So your only winning option is to get a friend to come along and completely shutdown anything a mesmer can do to you. One person attacks the phantasms before they can wreak havoc the other tries to get some hits in on the mesmer. We’re forced to run or die in this situation and you can at least take the point from us. Is this fair or fun? Not really no. We’re remarkably powerful in structured right now and I’d gladly trade some of that strength for some better PvE mechanics.

Last time I did WvWvW the Big Red Arrow was still there when the mesmer reappeared, need some confirmation on this.

Grave digging i see.
I have no problem whatsoever killing a Mesmer. It’s quite easy if you learn the tricks to identify the real one!
The best advice is to create a Mesmer and learn for yourself the flaws!
It is very simple… get their HP to zero.

1) Get off the forums
2) Create a mesmer
3) Play said mesmer
4) Realize everything you said was rubbish
5) Begin to kill mesmers without lying on the forums
I’m a mesmer who usually does pve. I did some wvw last night and ran into this enemy ranger. I rocked him hard, but he was able to run away. I need practice immobilizing them. anyways, he couldn’t get me below half health and I repeatedly would get him to 15%, he’d run, heal, I’d catch up, get him to 15% again, he’d run, etc. eventually I just gave up :P I didn’t see that being a problem when I went in there, but I’ll probably equip blink from now on.

Blink, invis, focus (temp curtain swiftness + pull), runes of centaur. That should do =)

Depending on build, Centaur would mean having to drop better runes and their stats… only to run faster/for longer periods of time… not my cup of tea, if you ask me.
Runes of the Undead FTW!

Look for the clone that dodges? I don’t think clones can dodge…
I think with what I had equipped, my main problem was using temporal curtain early, like to get to them to attack because he was long/short bow, then it wason cd when he ran.
best way to tell the difference between clones/illusions/real thing = casting speed. clones and illusions attack like 1/4 or 1/2 as often as the real thing, and always the same. real thing will do stuffs.
there’s also the option of mirror image + decoy. the enemy will see 3 you’s and pick which one is real to attack. meanwhile, you are invisible right behind them and ready to pounce.

Once you target the mesmer, don’t change targets and you will always be aiming at the real one even if he makes clones. They have a skill to go stealth for a few seconds and I just back off. Clones will either stand still and autoattack or run straight at you. Wait until you see one of the clones moving away from you or dodging and that is the real one. When they go down, it seems like they can make clones still. When real players go down, they have red arrow hovering over their body. Clones don’t.
(edited by kokocabana.8153)
the mesmer downed 2 skill cloaks you for like 3 seconds, creates a downed clone a short distance away who attacks, and teleports you a short distance in a random direction. sometimes I get lucky and teleport through a small wall or something, but usually it’s just a delay to the inevitable.
