How do you search for and apply to guilds? I see nothing for this, can you only be invited and not apply? Seems silly to have Guild in the name but not have guild search and apply functions so I feel like I must be missing something.

If you make a guild, can you invite your other characters, or can you only invite an online character?

Unfortunately, you cannot search for guilds in game. The best way to find a decent guild is look online at various forums (such as the guild section of these forums).
One of the better sites I’ve found is GW2 Recruiting.

Guild Leaders can post their guild, and players can post their character, and then each can browse through the other category and message them. Its how I got into my guild.

Guilds are account bound. That is, you can join multiple guilds (4, I think?), and you are a member of those guilds on all of your characters. However, on each character, you choose which guild you are currently “representing”, or your current active guild. So yes, if you make a guild, you can represent it with all of your characters.

I have no idea if Guild Leaders can send a request to someone who is offline. I’m guessing no, but you’ll have to try it to be sure.

Yes, you can invite someone who isn’t online.

And you can be in 5 guilds.

And I’ve never heard of a game with a system that lets you apply to a guild in-game, although my MMO experience isn’t exactly huge so forgive me if I’m incorrect.

World Of Warcraft allows you to look for guilds and also apply in game and in fact is a good way of doing it.

For me GW2 is funny in that its supposed to be about guilds but does not really encourage guilds in the way i thought it would

The Guild Wars were an event in the history of the GW world in which many powerful guilds waged wars against each other. This in-fighting led to Ascalon falling to the Charr, Orr blowing itself up (to fend off the charr) and Kryta falling under the leadership of the white Mantle (and the Mursaat—to fend off the Charr as well).

The notion of infighting leading to weakness which is exploited by one’s enemies is a recurring theme.

Best way to find a guild: Go to lion’s arch and ask for an invite to a guild. tell a bit what your looking for and I think within minutes your i na guild.

Best way to find a decent guild your going to like : Play the game (and do activity’s you like), talk to people you meet, be social and interact with others. When you feel a connection with a player or group of players aks them if they are in a guild and if so if you can join.
