Q:
How do ticks work?
A:
If you are talking specifically about conditions in GW2 then no.
When players refer to a “tick” of damage, they mean everytime their condition is damaging a monster. In this case, one tick is one stack of the condition per second. (Thus, 13 stacks of bleed gives you 13 ticks of damage per second while that 13 stacks of bleed is active)
Some other skills only tick once per second and so on.
Ticks can change radically based on the skill being used.
As I mentioned earlier, you could have 13 ticks of bleed per second, or 7, or 2, or if you use other skills perhaps you only get 1 tick of damage per second (with say, lava font or something)
Basically it varies on what situation it’s used in.
If the term is used the same as in other programs a tick is however long it takes for the computer to calculate everything that has changed in the game (since the last tick) and update it.
It could be a second, it could be less, or more depending on the processing speed and how much needs doing.

Lol do you mean ticks as he describes above or bleeds as in Bleed and Burning ticks from condition damage? If so each stack of a condition is a single tick per one second of damage. For burning damage happens all at once each second since it stacks duration. Bleeds can have multiple ticks a second, up to 25/second on a mob. Poison is the same as Bleeding.

I was asking about ticks in relation to the workings of condition damage, not the workings of software.
Oh, I’ve never heard that called ticks. Only stacks or damage packets.
I wonder if it’s a regional thing? (I play on an EU server with mostly UK players.)

@Danikat: the GW2 wiki mentions ticks on several occasions, at least on pages about conditions or skills that apply conditions.

Don’t the ticks of a single condition (no matter the number of stacks) happen at the same time? Otherwise I’m seeing some performance issues in there.

wrong about poison there, poison stacks in durtion, and thus is the same as burning more

If you’re referring to my comment about the 13, 7 or 2, then I was specifically meaning that if you have 2 stacks of bleed you’re going to have 2 ticks per second. Rather than you get a random amount of ticks per second based on performance.
However, no, im pretty sure the damage ticks happen separately during the second, rather than all at once (at least, that’s how the damage numbers appear on my screen)
