Though I took a break for a few months, I’ve been a fan of GW2 since launch. (I didn’t even stop playing because I was bored of it.) The problem is, as much as I love it, I can’t find one character to stick with.

I want one to focus on, to make ascended gear for, multiple sets, you know. One to master. I just can’t pick a class and stick with it. It’s like there’s something about every class that bothers me. But the rest of the game is so great that it’s frustrating.

I messed around on Wildstar a bit. Can’t really play it to end game because I can’t do raiding, but the thing is I knew exactly what race and class I wanted to play. Straight off. No problems. It was a spellslinger. I like ranged classes and I like handguns.

So I thought, what can I do in GW2 that would be close to that? A P/P thief would be fun if it was actually viable for anything. P/P engineer works in pvp situations, but isn’t as great in pve without kits. Might still lean toward it, but you know.

I have an 80 in every class but ranger and mesmer. The mesmer playstyle just isn’t for me, and I don’t want a class where I have to have a pet out all the time. (It’s not even that ranger isn’t fun. I have one that’s lvl 67, but the pet just bothers me.) Maybe I’m incredibly picky, but I need to be happy with my main choice, right? It just seems like no matter what I try, something bothers me.

A lot of it probably has to do with how much I hate the meta builds. They make me angry. I don’t like being pigeonholed into a certain few specs, and this seems to be the case in pve – save maybe for fractals. If I was better at pvp I would switch my focus. Maybe I should anyway, though I really like the pve storyline content. And maybe it doesn’t even matter, since I don’t focus too heavily on dungeon runs. I should just make a set for them and switch everything off when I need to. No big deal.

Anyway, I’m just frustrated. Looking for someone else who has similar issues, maybe.

I have a stack of characters and play all of them.

Maybe if you’re having trouble focusing then stop trying and play all of them when you feel like running a particular one around.

As for the meta build – maybe have a set of gear a trait line up that suits you for general hijinks and another for when you really have to bow down to peer pressure.

Personally, I picked the class I enjoyed playing exactly how I wanted to play, then tinkered with the passive boosts to make it a somewhat viable build and now I do fairly decently.

I’ll always say you should take whatever you have the most fun with and try to make it work. in the end, this is a game, who’s main purpose is for you to have fun

Druid main, 80 on all, Legendary ranked, Eternal and all that jazz (I go by Feyris in game)

A p/p thief IS fun. I started my thief to get a key. I kept her because it is so much fun. Don’t give up on them too quickly. They are viable when you get practice at staying in motion all the time and get good at dodge rolling. Trait for might and swiftness on dodge roll and for regaining endurance on dodge. For a backup weapon, i use the short bow.

I also have a stack of characters and use them all from time to time. I highly recommend it.

I actually have decided to mess around on my thief for a while and see what I can come up with. I’m not the best at making builds, but I’ve got some ideas. If all else fails, I may end up gearing up a couple characters for different situations rather than one.

I have a pretty good build for a pistol pistol thief, if you want. Does great in the open world and such. Message me in game if you’re interested.

The thing about meta builds is you don’t actually need to use them unless you’re wanting to do high-end group content, like speed clearing dungeons.

The vast majority of the game isn’t demanding enough to require a perfectly tailored build and the vast majority of players know that and don’t require you to have one. If you want to do something crazy like use only blue gear with healing power stats on an aggressive melee warrior you might run into trouble, but in general any build will work.

My main is a condi/crit ranger with toughness as a 3rd stat. The only time it’s a problem is when I run into a champion or veteran who targets the person with the highest toughness and I realise I’m surrounded by zerkers and going to spend the whole fight kiting. (Or when I run into an idiot commander who tells me it doesn’t matter what kind of damage I do, I should attack Tequatl directly instead of defending the turrets. Then again he also said that’s because the turrets ’don’t matter’ as long as enough people are spamming DPS on the dragon.)

I may not want to do dungeon speed runs, but I may want to run dungeons at some points. I know plenty of people run them normally. I may want to do fractals – I’ve done them some in the past and don’t really care for them, but I have friends that do high level ones. I want to do wvw for sure, though that ties more into my skill in pvp (or lack of it) as I’ll be running in small roaming groups most likely.

It’s just a matter of multiple sets and knowing I can’t always do exactly what I want.

When I first started, I was an altoholic. The Guardian was my main focus until I maxed him out and then I floated around on my alts for a while. I’m really guilty of having class envy – where I’ll make a character because I like how they look or how their skills look/function. My thought is pick one or two guys that round out pretty well. Mesmer is actually a good bet for that because they are pretty favorable in instances and JPs, but if that’s not your thing, Guardians make a great main character as well.

I just don’t know if anyone can tell you what to main. Everyone is different. Some can play 10 different toons, some have to focus on one or at most a few. If you prefer handguns, then that is going to narrow your choices. If you prefer melee over kiting, again, this should help you narrow your search for a main.

Personally, I have one of every armor weight, light, medium and heavy. I have tried every class, and have had many toons to 80, but have realized that I really only enjoy 2 classes: necro and warrior. I deleted several level 80s so I could focus on those 2. In addition, I have an 80 thief that I’m trying to learn so I can roam in WvW and not get eaten alive. My necro I use everywhere – great for AoE mob tags in Orr and for group play in WvW. My warrior is so far only used in PvE, and then mainly for world bosses and dungeons for her high DPS and ability to melee well. I have at least 2 builds for each class I play.

I hope you find something you really enjoy. Good luck!
