How do you make gold?
Gather everything you see. Every ore, herb, and tree. Sell them. Don’t craft.
I don’t stockpile mats. There’s no point and I’d rather have the gold. Wasting 50g just to level up a profession is a waste when you can just buy the crafted item for 3g on the TP.
Also, run some dungeons and world bosses. They give rares/exotics that you can sell or salvage for valueable parts.

Going to Orr alone is not a good way to make money. Join a raid that clears Orr temples instead.
Certain champions give you a guaranteed rare drop once per day (for example the Fire Elemental in the Maguuma jungle). Kill them and sell the rares.
Guild missions give you 50s each every week (5 missions total). There are guilds that let you jon them just to participate in guild missions.
Dungeons give you a nice amount of silver at the end of them.
Dailies give you laurels that you can spend on Unidentified Dyes or crafting mats, which you can sell.
While doing all that you’ll also gather other sellable stuff.
Thanks for the replies! So far I’m having some success with running around, gathering mats, and selling them, though it seems that prices on my server have sort of crashed. I think I’ll take a stab at the world bosses too. I remember going to the swamp area to fight the tea kettle dragon.
I tried doing an Orr temple run (Grenth, I think) earlier on… Did not end well, haha. There was a champion mob that just ran around one-shotting us.
A lot of people have told me that dungeons are the best (and in some cases, only) way to make money, but my experiences with dungeons is that you’ll wipe on every trash pull at least once. Unless you’re all warriors, of course. I’ve just avoided them for the most part because my repair costs tended to outweigh the end reward. Then again, I haven’t attempted dungeons since near the game launch – were they changed?
for dungeons you need experienced people. pug ( pick up groups ) which is groups of total random people is the worst groups as they tend to do whatever they want. which makes the group fail.
yes, the dungeons have changed since near launch and the end reward will change again on thuesday 6th of august.
Join a guild if your not in one and find people there to run dungeons with and learn dungeons if you dont know them already. guild groups tend to be a lot better than pugs.

That’s true only if you’re unfortunate to get an especially bad group, usually with PUGs. I’ve cleared dungeons many times with no delays or wipes in groups with guildmates/friends, and none of us were warriors, either. (I’m a D/D elementalist, and usually the last one standing.) Dungeons are also much more difficult than open-world PvE and require you to have a strong knowledge of your class and be good at avoiding damage. Most of the people I see who die in dungeons do so because they stand absolutely still and let the enemy hit them.
I’m on a tight schedule in-game currently, but if you’re interested, I can invite you to a run with my group and let you see how smoothly runs can go when everyone’s experienced.

I wouldn’t wish myself on a pick up group :P The few dungeons I have done were mostly people from my old guild who could 4-man the dungeon while I tried to keep up.
Thanks for the kind offer Falunel, though you don’t have to – one of my friends from another game has offered to teach me about dungeons. So far I’ve been stuck at the rolling ball things in CoF for the past few minutes. I’m not sure I’m cut out for dungeons, lol.
Are D/D elementalists sturdy? I play a guardian and I die if I look at myself cross-eyed in the mirror.
Edit – repair costs seem to be a fraction of what I remember them being. Weren’t they 23s per death at one point? I recall having repair costs of 1g or more after dungeon runs.

Never
You must be thinking of some other game.
Oh, it’s not prices on your server. The TP is game wide.
How are you supposed to make gold? I’ve been trying to do Orr events but I die multiple times on them. I’ve got a little over 1g right now and I don’t know how long it’s going to last.
If your having problems in Orr with a level 80 character you likely need to upgrade your armor and weapons. Try teaming up with some one. Switch to a lower level area 60-70 and farm resources and do events there until you have enough gold to upgrade! Right now you can make 8-10 silver for any of the mini games running in the living story events currently running.
My suggestions mostly match those already given – but they have worked for me.
I sell all the mats I get, makes a fair amount of money. Unless it sells for a fair amount of silver, I salvage every item I come across. And then sell the mats.
Also, do the world bosses! Good fun, plus the items which can be used, sold, or tuned into mats.
Complete maps – they give an okay amount of coin. Plus, you’ll get the mats/items/events etc that come along with the area.
Ultimately, I feel it just takes some time. But don’t be bored in that time!
Harvesting (the right)herbs can be extremely profitable too. Metrica Province, Caledon Forest, Mount Maelstrom are very good for vanilla beans. Various ascalonian maps are good for things like dill sprigs and chili peppers. Blazeridge Steppes is also great for both herbs and gold ore.
Prices are always going to fluctuate so you can’t really just rely on one thing although vanilla beans have been fairly reliable.

Short answer- yes, if you play them right. However, guardians should easily be just as sturdy and easier to play.
What server are you on? Maybe I can help you out.

I’d like to hijack this thread cause i got a question that goes in the same direction.
Everyones like “CoF is the best way to make money”…but what’s the second best way? I hate this dungeon with a fiery passion cause i’ve been there too often and finding groups is always annoying, anyway..
I’d like to know what’s really the best way to make solo money. Lodestones farming? Events?
Guardian is waaaaay tougher than an Ele!
Having said that, it really matters how you spec. If you go glass canon, sure you kill things fast – but they often kill you faster.
If you have a hard time surviving, go for the WvW standard of Power/Vitality/Toughness.
In fact, use some karma to buy a set of PVT armour off the vendors in WvW.

You should ask what’s the best way to have fun. The gold in this game is only ‘pretend’ money. Gold, Karma, Laurels, Badges of Honor, Ectoplasm are all equally valuable in their own way.
Well if i want to have fun then i’ll just go WvW, that’s the most fun for me. But you’re not getting rich with it
Right now I need round about 300g and I just want to know what’s the best way to make this money WITHOUT running a dungeon over and over and over again until your brain melts and drips out of your ears like pudding.

That’s about two months of normal, non-grind gameplay. Just enjoy the game, and you’ll get there.

Also this whole running a dungeon over and over till your brain melts will be gone after august 6th. Now it will be speed clears of multiple dungeon paths. I believe that dungeons will still be the best time:money ratio but you will not be able to repeat it the same way you can now. Meaning if you have an hour to play and you want to make the most money than running the fastest dungeon path will be the go to method. However this is just my GUESS, it might be that the champion loot bags are really worth something so running in a champion rich area will be better.

“Best” is debatable but it is certainly one of the few ways you are guaranteed a certain amount of gold(except when bugs are involved >_<). The other being the gem→gold exchange.
Most dungeons are champion rich areas too.

Yeah both of those points are very true If you really want the best gold:time ratio, turn off your computer and get a real world job. : P Lets say you get a 10 dollar an hour job. You convert that one hour to CoF farming and you get 5 or 6 gold. if you convert that 10 dollars from your job than you get 800 gems which right now gets you about 20 gold.

I’m afraid that I can’t really say which is the best way to make gold, CoF is only the simplest way to make money in the game, the first path is way too easy and the drops are more profitable than in other places.
However there are many ways to make gold, it might not be as fast as CoF but still you can get some decent gold from them, I tend to do a bit of everything during the week:
- Crucible of Eternity runs: This dungeon is very easy to do and can be done really fast if you know what to do. There’s also a chance to obtain Charged Cores/Lodestones which sell quite well on the TP. There are also some easy ones like AC, TA, SE and HotW… althought the bosses in HotW are more like damage sponges…
- See image: There are many benefits to gathering the materials, if you have a stock of materials you’ll be prepared in case they suddenly rise in price, avoiding you to have to farm them later on due to the high cost. Of course it’s not like you must have 250 of everything but it’s good to have some available.
Also you can get other items like gems and unidentified dyes, it’s pretty random but you might sometimes even get rare dyes from it which sell well.
- Do world events and get into a farming group for areas, each boss provides a rare item which is rather a quick ~20 silver (minimum) or 0-3 ectos (~20 silver each). You can also farm for some hard to get materials (I believe from T4 onwards there is some profit to sell them, at least for me I don’t get many of this materials unless I go straight to farm them :o ).
- Play with the Trading Post: This is more like a trial/error process, I have 0 knowledge about economics but still I’m able to get some gold from selling items. Keep an eye on announcements in case that they detail that we’ll be returning to a zone (like what happened with Karka Shell for the previous Southsun event), take a look at the best selling items and see if you can craft something that is selling well on the TP (like dungeon accessories which are available only from a recipe).
