Is there a way?
This is if the character doesn’t have tattoos and is average height.
Not for any specific reason, just out of curiosity.

In general the smallest Norn is still taller than the average human. Maybe taller than the tallest human.
If the Norn is male look at their feet. They have giant feet.
Norns are taller and chunkier. The shortest, skinniest male Norn is a little taller and much wider than the tallest, widest male human. So an average Norn is quite a bit bigger than an average human. This image I found may be helpful: http://i.imgur.com/kIo9z.jpg
Other than that, they just look different… faces, hairstyles, stance, etc. You can kind of just tell, after a while.
In general, even same or close to same height chars, the humans are more slender. The males physique is very obvious once you get to know it. Broader shoulders and a shorter appearing neck. Short human sized females Norns look chunkier. To my eyes, Norn females look like adult women and human females look like late adolescents to early 20s (usually baby faced in comparison as well as less muscular looking).
Alright, thanks :P
I was hoping I could learn to tell after a while. Right now it’s sometimes hard.
Norn females have long, almost masculine torsos and muscular arms. Males have wide, bulky shoulders. Once you’ve played long enough, you will learn hairstyles and can go by that
In addition to everything mentioned above, the shoulder pieces of most armor sets are much larger on norn than on humans.
There are a few other things that are worth mentioning (although they might be really obvious).
Cultural armours- it’s worth being able to recognise all tier and armour weights of cultural armours. In some instances this may help tell the difference between human and norn.
Beards- norn males have a huge selection of bushy beards, crazy moustashes and decorated beards. Human males have only one long beard style- a “Zach Galifianakis” style.
No human male hair styles have accessories- if you see a guy with hair accessories (sweatband, hair bands etc) he’s a norn.
Voice and phrases- Norns have a much deeper voice than humans. They also have different phrases for conditions/buffs. E.g. for cripple, norn females will angrily mutter “Not the leg…” whereas human females screech “My leg!”.
Norn males and females have much squarer features compared to humans (who have very soft and rounded features). Even using the sliders, it’s difficult to reduce a norn’s ‘squareness’.
If you see a character with tattoos, it’s a norn. Humans don’t have tattoos.
As somebody has already mentioned, you’ll be able to easily recognise norn-only or human-only faces and hairstyles. It can take a little time to get used to the differences, but I have found that playing around in character creation is a fast way to distinguish them from each other.
Is there a way?
just ask them
If your human character only comes up to that player’s waistline, it’s a Norn.
I just have to put this in. Guild transvestoon night, post-Marionette battle. My Norn and my guildie’s Human. His reply after I sent him the screen was “My character looks like your mini”
Obviously there’s some perspective involved but here it is.

Indeed. Here is a picture from Guild Wars 1. A Norn (Jora) and two non Norns.
Yea, no force perspective here. Mine is the one on the left.
It can actually be quite difficult to tell for females if the Norn is very short/slim and the Human is very tall/broad. For males it’s easier because their standing pose is quite distinct.
Once they start talking I can tell at once.
Easy, give a Norn and a Human a big barrel of beer. The one who is still standing after the barrel is empty is the Norn.

Much better.
There smell of course.
Aaaand let the Norn jokes commence….XD
Tell them you have no idea who they are. If they get angry and hit you they are a Norn.

Tallest human and shortest norn is the same height.
