I’m a total beginner and I need your help. I’m thinking of building an immobilizing Mesmer and I’m wondering, in what ways, can immobilize help during pvp and pve?

In pvp I understand a melee opponent may be doomed if immobilized for too long but we need to be behind a ranged opponent for immobilized to be effective. Since ranged opponents can still attack if immobilized.

Any enlightenment is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Immobilization is a Condition that prevents movement/turning/dodging. Its more useful in WvW/PvP and it only lasts a couple of seconds max. You can use it offensively/defensively to halt charging/fleeing opponents giving you some time to attack or run away yourself. Ranged professions can’t turn so unless you are directly in their line of sight they can’t attack you. Its still not as good as true Control effects like (Stun/Daze) which prevents actions completely unless they use a stun breaker or it wears off naturally. Its not particularly useful in PvE where everything basically stands still anyways. Unlike WvW/PvP you can basically outrun anything as long as your aren’t Crippled yourself.

In PvE I inmobilize so much that i couldn’t play without it. Examples of useful scenarios.

1: You got an enemy either ranged or melee that will kill you and you are about to die in the next hit. Then inmobilize and hide behind a column. Hiding will force the enemy to find Line of Sight, but due to the immobilization you will get some extra precious seconds where it won’t hit you (and you might recover or heal in that time).

2: An enemy with a hammer (you know it sucks) is in a pull of enemies. While the group smash them you can just inmobilize the hammer guy and win some times to kill the other enemies in the meanwhile, because when it gets to you, you’ll have a hard time.

3: When you need an enemy in an specific position, as example big Bosses of dungeons that needs to stay inside of an area (Mai Trin). You can just inmobilize while inside to prevent it to exit.

4: It’s also useful to Rez people if you are the last guy standing and there’s a boss trying to kill you. Immobilize and get some times to rez.

I use it in my warrior and those 4 seconds are just really useful for me.

Hi everyone. Thanks for your help and the discussion. I understand how immobilize can help in pvp and pve.

And how about this idea? It may be hilarious when tried. What if guardians and mesmers immobilize a ranged boss or mob; and mesmers take turns performing a feedback bubble forcing the boss or mob to attack itself for a prolonged period of time? haha (I know I stated this a while back in another post but I thought I’d bring it up again to get some feedback—-both get comments and get more people to use feedback :P.) And kite melee mobs with immobilize and attack from far.

The cons for this method is that melee allies will feel left out. In order to hit, they’ll have to be within the feedback bubble and they’ll get hit. And they can’t kite either right?

Immob isn’t that useful for general PvE except when soloing, it helps maintain some distance between you and the target. Specific situations when it would be useful for groups is Arah P1, when stacking for the tar boss immobs are quite useful to trap the boss and keep it from running away.

Sadly feedback (and reflects in general)were nerfed across dungeons, but it still works against tough bosses like Lupi. I honestly don’t care if they fix it so it doesn’t work at Lupi either, since most bag PUGs tend to rely overmuch on reflects when fighting him otherwise they wipe a lot. Bottom line groups shouldn’t learn to rely too much on reflects or really anything else, or it might be the next thing that gets nerfed.

Hmm…I suppose they’re supposed to nerf reflect. On bosses that do not move that much, Feedback might be an automatic win button.
