How long can you be afk?
Less than the amount of time between when they said the fireworks would start and when they did start for most people.

usually most mmos have a 20 to 30 minute window that if your not active you will be kicked out for inactivity. I think GW2 its a 20 mins window

Ah dang. I just want to get it over with. Some people in LA said they waited 2 hours after the suppossed start time. Then it started randomly at 10:30am server time. :/
Don’t worry about it…I see a crash in our future…..Hehe or at least one hell of a stress test…
Almost everyone trying to be in the same place at same time on all worlds and overflows PLUS awesome fireworks in a zone that is already graphics-heavy. So doubt anyone will be able to move at best. Just a sea of names and probably hndreds complaining that they didn’t get credit or whatever toy.

Been fixed, since april or some time around then, at least for me. I used to put guard’s renewed focus on auto-cast to afk, but can’t do it anymore.
You could try auto-attacking a target dummy, assuming that prevents you being afk kicked.
You can put your heal skill on autocast. You will still get kicked eventually. It’s been about an hour the couple of times I did it.
The time actually seems to depend on how busy the map is. I was standing around in LA for around 50 minutes for the fireworks but that was in overflow and overflow either has a longer timer or non-existent timer for kicking people off.
Interestingly, a guildie of mine had to leave about ten minutes before the fireworks. That was at 3 pm or so my time. Now it’s nearly 1 am and she’s still in my group, marked Away, and if I want to get to LA Main I can join her there. However, she remains a silhouette in party portraits and isn’t visible at her dot’s location.
I figure the game isn’t booting her until she clicks the reward chest. I thought she’d be back way sooner than this and have pinged her to try to get her to come in and click it so she doesn’t lose her helmets.
She was probably booted to the char screen, which displays people as being online.
You don’t need to go AFK for this event you just need to know what clues to look for.
The event starts at dawn (game time, not real world time), which is different on each server and each overflow. However the day in game is 2 hours, “day” is 70 minutes long, “night” is 40 minutes and the transition “dawn” and “dusk” are both 5 minutes, together a full 2 hours.
So as you watch the sky and see day turn to night you’ll know you have about 40 minutes to dawn. Give or take a few minutes since it’s hard to tell exactly when day becomes dusk and night becomes dawn and you know how long until the next event.
But DO NOT listen to all the naysayers that keep telling people the event starts on the hour (it might if that’s the way your server is set, but it’s very unlikely), and don’t believe anyone that tells you the events don’t work in overflow, they do, I’ve seen many to date in overflow.
