Just wondering how many skill points I get and if I can respect them at some point.

You can max out every skill and still have points left over. There is no respec*, so try to tag the skills you want first, then worry about checking out the others later/never.

Once you hit Level 80, you can keep “leveling” (receiving a new skill point but not a new Trait point) forever.

The Legendary class of weapons (as I understand it) requires 200 Skill Points at a minimum to get the materials required to craft it.

Edit: *Sorry, I should’ve specified; there is no skill point respec. The others are correct in that you can respec traits.

You can respec. When you read the level 40 and 60 books, your traits all become unassigned and you can put them in however you desire. Also at any time you can spend a couple silver with the trainer and the traits are unassigned.

There are 202 skill point challenges along with one skill point per level upon reaching level 5 for 277. Once you reach level 80, you continue to gain experience and once the bar is full, you gain another skill point. A human character will spend 177 skill points to obtain all healing, utility and expert skills.

Yeah, skill points aren’t something you have to worry about unless you’re not 80. Just pick the ones you want and go from there.

Well you’ve gotten answers from people who seem confused. As far as I know, there is no limit to the amount of skill points you can have. Even after level 80, xp still goes up, then it reaches the end you “level up” again, and it gives you a skill point. Where you spend your skill points is permanent, but it doesn’t matter, because skill points keep coming. You can unlock all skills and still build up skill points.

With traits you only get 70 trait points. They are able to be respecced at your profession trainer for a few silver.

Thanks for the replies. I was scared to spend any points till I found out for sure how it works. Now I will just get the things that sound the most important to my char first and play around with the traits and see what I like there.

That’s probably the best way to do it.

While you’re levelling I still recommend getting skills you want first because it’ll be much easier to play with decent skills, but don’t worry about making the wrong choice, if you decide later on you want something different at worst you’ll have to wait a little bit to save up enough points.

Traits are a bit different because you have to pay to reset them, but it’s not expensive and they reset when you buy new manuals so at least until you’re ready to unlock Grandmaster you can just experiment.

Yes. The cost of resetting traits is 3s50c at lv80.

In your mid 20s it’s a good idea to start saving them up so that you have 10 to spend as soon as you hit level 30 to unlock an elite skill (or 20 to unlock 2 elite skills, so that you can then go into the 2nd tier of elite skills which cost 30 each). Just because elites can be not-quite-game-changers and it’s a cool milestone to unlock your first elite skill. I can almost guarantee you’ll be unhappy with the first one you unlock the more you play, but that’s the beauty of it; by the time you get around to optimizing your build you’ll have everything unlocked anyways.

It seems like people have gotten a little mixed up between skill points and trait points, or at least not specified which they’re talking about. So here’s a summary of both:

Skill Points
These have a blue ‘up arrow’ symbol. You get your first one at level 5 and they’re used to unlock healing (6), utility (7-9) and elite (0) skills via the ‘Slot Skills’ menu on the Skills and Traits tab of the Hero Panel. Later on in the game they’re also used as a sort of currency to buy certain things.

You can’t get them back once you’ve spent them, but you can get an infinite number of them because after you reach level 80 you will continue to get them from earning enough experience to ‘level up’ again and from skill challenges.

Trait Points
These have a brown hexagon symbol. You get your first one at level 11, get them only from levelling up and can only get 70 of them in total. They’re used on the Traits menu of the Skills and Traits tab to unlock passive bonuses (an increase to your attributes and various bonus effects).

To use them you first have to buy a trait manual from a trainer. You’ll need to buy an additional 2 manuals to unlock the higher tiers as you level up and each time you use one your traits will be reset. You can also just speak to the trainer and ask them to reset your traits, which is cheaper than buying a manual.
