How much Health should a player have minimum?
What is the heaviest non-direct damage (where Toughness is not applicable) to players in a single hit?

Purpose: the answer to this is important in deciding how much minimum Vitality/Health a player should have.

There is none because classes vary on HP pools and damage mitigation techniques. Some people dont need any vitality and run successful builds on their character.

The heaviest non direct damage has no application because if your not dodging, youll die in PvE anyway. Dont look to tank through things, dodge through them

If you’re talking about PvP, it varies wildly and depends a lot on character and build.

If you’re talking about PvE: 0. Full berserkers. Always. PvE design flaw: The things you can tank you don’t need to, and the things you wanted to tank you can’t.

15-17k.

20-25k if you want to be tanky.

Cannot stress this enough. Biggest flaw in GW2 (aside from the poorly monetized F2P model).

Boon Guardian (PvE):
So far I haven’t seen any reason why dodging and skill aren’t enough to survive.
Until there is content that requires players to take an unmitigated amount of damage, I see no reason to purposely apply additional Vitality.

This isn’t exactly true. If you’re in full zerk mode and trying to kill say, 7 guys at once, some of them will likely be ranged. If they’re not in a nice ball for you to AoE, you’ll have to run around taking each one down individually and in the process take a good amount of damage. It’s not that difficult to figure out, but if you really want to solo 5-10 monsters at once, most of the time being pure zerk won’t be the best option. I don’t know how anyone could disagree.

I think a healthy and balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, along with some meat is gonna be the best for a health of any player. One should also sleep at appropriate times, and try to avoid vices as much as possible (smoking, excessive drinking, drugs, etc). Doing all of these should suffice in meeting the minimum health of a gw2 player.

But what about our characters?

My Warrior, for example, has a pretty serious addiction with oils and, for some unknown reason, a soup. I have tried talking to him about it, but he just keeps telling me that I wouldn’t understand it.

I have also seen a lot of people gnawing on sharpening stones or eating lots of pizza. I think that’s pretty unhealthy.

Any advice on how to deal with my Warrior? How about dealing with strangers that are obviously going through similar experiences?

I’m not so sure. I think the worse is people who intentionally entice others to be more obese by laying down free food everywhere. Who can say no to free omnomberry pies??

5-10 what…? Champions….? Elites…? Veterans…? Maybe… Cause if you’re talking normal monsters, 10 “trash mobs” don’t even scratch the paint. Just herd them together and zerk them down.

PvE is the land of the berzerker. Until they significantly change the game design that’s how it goes, like it or not.

No it isn’t…
I’m not saying zerker isn’t amazing, I’m saying that with a more balanced build you can kill a lot more monsters of higher difficulty. I don’t think that’s even something to contest. Of course if they’re all melee, well then most of the time you’re totally right; you just round ‘em up and squash. With a varied swarm of enemies though, you can’t do that. You’ll just take too must damage in the time you’re trying to herd, and either die or flee.

Lol. Finally a thread where everyone has a correct answer.

Not to be unhelpful OP, but is your character a glass cannon, a bunker, or a hybrid inbetween? Are you an elementalist, messmer, thief, guardian, warrior, ranger, necro, or engineer? Will your build utilize any healing type skills, utilities or traits? Same for defensive and protection type. Is your build dependent on dodges as in vigor procs? What skill level are you in terms of agility on the keyboard, knowledge of the class and so forth?

In other words, what we kind of do is set up the character the way we like to play or want to try out. Then we put in enough vitality to keep us alive.

No right answer indeed. Class mechanics make it all blury. My guardian has actuall low health, but a huige amount of armor and thoughness and bout 11 things I can do to protect her or heal her.

My engineer has more health, but lower armor, and lesser protection (though still good one). Obvious my guardian can survive longer, but is designed to stay closer and catching more damage as well.

The survivability depends on:
- Health (vitality + class basics)
- Thougness (+armor basic)
- healing power
- traits
- trait skills
- weapon skill
- utility skills
- class mechanic like e.g. deathshroud on necro or vritues on guardian
- the combination of all above

Then all of this has also be in balance with how quick you can kill foes (killing quickly means you have to invest more in damage but you need lesser defense cause enemy’s have lesser time to kill you).

Shrugs. Think it’s a player issue mate. Never had issue killing waves of trash mobs without taking significant hits. Round them up and maim them.

The only things you’d want to tank you can’t anyways, like high level fractal mobs for example, so you rely on avoiding them, which you can do on full berserker just the same, except you also kill them faster.

Ugh….
As for “The only things you’d want to tank you can’t anyways”, well that depends on the player and what they want to tank. Maybe if you want to solo a certain champ you won’t go zerker. I remember one champ in Cursed, west of the north-most waypoint. It’s an ele, and while it’s easily soloable for me at least, it has a few high-hitting spells that might down a zerker build with a few casts. Not to mention there are a few other ele trash mobs nearby that blind you. Just try it with your zerk build and see how it goes.

I still don’t see how this is debatable, so I’ll stop trying.

The zerker vs. non-zerker in PvE debate is honestly very complicated, moreso than either side would have you believe. I originally wrote a very long post detailing the situations in which zerker is useful and the situations in which balanced/bunker is useful, but it doesn’t answer the OP’s question, nor will it convince anyone on either side.

Soooo. I’ll just state my personal policy: I don’t care what people play as long as they enjoy themselves and have a good attitude. If someone objects, I shall gladly tell them to go eat a litter of kittens and wash them down with the mother cat’s tears.

To the OP: it depends heavily upon your class and your build as well as your skill level. Certain classes can get away with lower HP depending on how well they can evade/recover. I’ve been able to do Arah explorable, level 20+ Fractals, and AC story and group events solo with 14-15k HP, but that’s as an ele built heavily for recovery and evasion with good knowledge of the dungeons.

Heaviest damage? I vaguely recall a boss spiking someone for 18k in two hits (9k per hit), as well as another hitting for 14k in one hit, but I don’t recall what build that person was nor which bosses they were.
