How to advance in GW2 step by step?
5. Normally you get loot based on level but Hearts still hand out map level specific loot. I believe. I haven’t paid close enough attention to when I get something low level because I don’t notice it’s level until I sell it or salvage it which may be some time after I got it.
2. Crafting can be done anytime and usually players pick their two crafting specialties to benefit that character. Crafting also gives you normal character XP so you can gain levels crafting. Remember, since leveling is rather quick in this game, most crafted items aren’t actually in demand as you are leveling up your crafting. So unless you hoard up mats as you level up, through gathering or salvaging, crafting will end up costing you a fair bit of coin.

1. For versatility I’d say either elementalist or engineers are good, with ele having higher damage vs engineer being able to fill certain niche roles (access to party-wide stealth, for example) that ele doesn’t have access to. Both of those classes require some juggling skills around, but they’re fun once you get the hang of it.
2. Crafting is really up to you. Some people like to level it as they progress, others just do it all in one go – I think the thing to keep in mind is that generally speaking you’re likely going to spend/lose money on it rather than gain, and these days the main reason people level their crafting is so they max it out and can do ascended stuff. That said, it gives experience and it can feel nice to gear yourself up instead of going to the TP.
3. Guilds are really down to what you as a player want. Some people like having big guilds where there’s always a lot of people around, others prefer smaller, close-knit groups where it’s easier to build a rapport. It works better if what the guild is oriented at is similar to what you want (ie joining a WvW-oriented guild when you prefer PvE is just silly) but other than, it’s really what you want that matters.
4. sPvP can be started whenever you want, pretty much – equipment is normalized so that everyone is on the same level no matter their gear and character level, and it comes down to build, skill and team play.
For WvW, level 80 is recommended – while you are upscaled if you go in earlier, gear IS important there and so coming in as a level sub-80 you’ll be missing stats compared to others and be easy prey for the enemy.
Dungeons: a lot of people want to run only with level 80 characters, for similar reasons to the WvW thing – 80s have all their traits and more or less final gear, so it makes things faster/easier since there is a big difficulty jump from open world to dungeons. HOWEVER it is very much possible to run dungeons before that.
I definitely recommend doing story mode dungeons as you unlock them (you’ll receive mail telling you when that happens), as they’re not too difficult even for newbies and are a decent way to get you used to working with your party without the pressure of explorable mode. Try to find lfg postings that say ‘all welcome’ or something along those lines. If you can’t find any, make your own. I’d also suggest you tell people at the beginning of the run if it’s your first time running something – you might get bad reactions but in my experience, a lot of people are very willing to help out and tell you how things work if you ask whereas they’ll be much less tolerant of kitten-ups if nothing was said. (and if you’re on EU servers feel free to hit me up ingame if you need someone to show you around the dungeons)
5. Most mobs will drop gear appropriate to your level, heart or not. There’s a chance it’ll be zone-appropriate instead, but that’s rarer and random afaik.
Hello everyone , i started playing GW 2 a couple of days ago during my winter holidays , it is needles to say i got addicted to it hard.
As my first class i took Ranger class , to learn basics mostly. Now when i covered basics and some more advanced stuff i wanna do a new character where i wont make mistakes i made with my Ranger.
So i got a couple of questions for you guys in order for me to make it happen.
1. Which class would you recommend for me , i prefer versatility , like in moment i can do damage and do some crowd control and in second moment i can help other people with buffs and such.
2. Crafting , should i do it in early levels or farm materials for later?
3. Guilds , what should i look when picking a guild?
4. PvP and dungeons , when to start them?
5. If i am lvl 40 for an example , and if i farm events in lvl 25-35 map , i get the loot acording to my lvl not the lvl of the map?
1. Pretty much any class can do this, some a bit better than others. Necro, Guardian, Ranger, Thief, Mesmer, they all can do it.
2. I say if you want, you can do it in early levels. Or you can save your materials and craft later. You can do it anytime you want. The low level materials normally tend to be a bit more expensive than the higher level ones, so you could start collecting them now.
3. That really depends. Do you want a small or a large guild? Do you want a guild that uses TS or one that doesn’t? I say try to look for a guild that fits your needs, and if you’re not comfortable with it, there’s nothing wrong with searching for a new guild.
4. You will get access to all dungeons at level 80, but if I’m not mistaken, I think you can start doing the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon as soon as you hit level 35. Explorable paths will you give you the best rewards but are also a little bit harder than the story paths.
Regarding PvP: you can do it as soon as you leave the tutorial area.
5. Sorry I don’t know about this one.
Behellagh covered half of my good points, so I’ll cover the other half
1. As Davey said, all classes are versatile. I personally feel the class that makes me feel the most versatile (just feelings) is the Thief. Thieves have some very powerful direct damage, condition damage, evasion, and utility skills. Their gameplay mechanic is very versatile too – Initiative allows you to pop 4 stunning slugs in a boss, or evade a couple more times, or get into stealth sooner. That lets you enforce your informed decisions with much greater ease than anyone with cooldown-based skills!
2. To add to what Behellagh said, there are some crafting items which will be useful (and nice) to have, and I mean bling-bling awesome upgrading backpacks. Levelling most crafting professions yields 1-2 levels per 100 skill, so that is very useful to have, if you are stuck.
3. As a new player, I would recommend that you pick from two choices:
→ A massive guild
→ A small expert guild
Massive Guilds are easy to find and you will be shown lots of stuff, and fast. However, they can feel cold despite their size, and you can stock up on bad habits.
Small Expert Guilds are hard to find. You will be shown less stuff because there’s less people, but you will get taught the best techniques and you will become a stronger player in the end. All those “best techniques” are transferrable, of course
4. What Davey said about dungeons is a bit imprecise. Dungeon storymodes are unlocked at lvl 30 and every 10 levels thereafter. Storymodes unlock explorable modes, which are for the dungeon base level +5 (so starting at lvl 35). You will find it easier to do dungeons on lvl 80, clearly, but you can always use the experience if you are lower than that (it’s great xp).
5. What Behellagh said.
Thank everyone , it helped a lot
