Hi, I have a small issue. My friend and I are both playing with human characters, and we are on a similar level. I’m 14, he is 10. I waited for him to get to the same point on the personal story (same exact quest) and we can’t figure out how to do the quests together. We’re on the same server, in a group. When he starts his quest, game doesn’t ask me to join, and vise versa.

Any ideas?

It is a little glitched out right now, if you are in a highly populated area where the party system tends to break, it will not work.

The easiest way to test this is to make sure a.) you are both in the exact same zone (either same overflow or same main server) and move away from eachother until you are both out of visual range of eachother. If the other person’s portrait in the party list disappears, then the party is bugged and you will not be able to do it together in that zone.

Or at least until the party system is fully fixed.

EDIT: @ Ten – No, actually me and my friends have been doing the late game storyline together and you only have to be in the same zone, the story marker can be anywhere in the map, and you can be anywhere in the zone and have it function.

From my personal attempts at this, you have to be close to each other in order to have your party member get the option to join you. Also, not every storyline mission can be done with friends, some require you to go alone (like duels).

Beyond that, you should be able to join each other, no matter where each of you are on your own storylines.

I see, I wasn’t aware of it being bugged. That explains a lot.

I’ve been wrestling with this since launch and it is possible, but many nights you’ll spend far more time trying to get in the same instance than you’ll spend actually doing the quest.

Note: just cuz we’re on the same story line doesn’t mean you’ll get credit for doing my quest. We’ll have to do them once for each person, who serves as the main character.

How do you guys suggest we play the game in that case? Should we just ignore the main story altogether while grouped and each of us do it when we’re playing solo?

My notes:
I have a Norn friend and I was working on a Norn necro. I played his story quest, got into his instance and because i was on the same story quest also got credit to finish the quest.
On a more recent note I was not permitted access to his story quest last night. I was also 3 levels under him. Possible bug, low lvl, bugged party. all possible outcomes.

I am having the same issue in Ganderran Fields (sp) level 28 char personal story quest. My friends and I will all be standing almost on top of each other, yet when I start the quest it does not give my friends the option to join. We have tried zoning together, logging out, restarting the game. Nothing works. None of us are on an overflow server either.

Any thoughts here?

Yeah, we spent about 3 hours trying last night. It never worked. Apparently there’s a way to manually join your friend’s instance (or there was at some point) but we couldn’t find it. We asked in map chat, and people suggested “right click on your friend in the group window and select join instance”.. But we don’t have that option. I think the system might be broken at the moment. Hopefully Anet gets around to fixing it soon.

It’s possible to do co-op story instances but it’s very hit and miss. Both characters will get credit for completing the story however only the initiating member (the one who started the event) will appear in the dialogue sequences. Any NPCs in the instance that need protecting/escorting will also only follow the initiator’s character.
When I do the stories together with my younger sister I always let her do the initiation since I don’t really care much to see my character babble with NPCs. We both get credit and baskets of exp so it’s a win-win.
