Hey guys, I just got this addicting catastrophe… and was wondering how to gear up…
I know that I have to aim for Exotics at 80, but what should I buy until than? Can someone help by listing options? At the moment I’m a level 20 ranger

Thank-you all beforehand!

PS: Go easy on me… I’m a complete noob so don’t abbreviate anything!

First off, welcome to the game!

As far as equips go, just try and keep up with your level if possible, but during the lower zones it’s not going to hurt too much.

When you start getting in to the 60 – 80 range, have an idea of what kind of spec you want to go for and what you think will work well for what play style you want to play, e.g. WvW, Dungeons etc. I am not too familiar with rangers but you’ll get the idea as you play whether you want damage, defense or supportish traits.

Keep in mind that there’s a whole subforum dedicated to each class so you can look there for anything and everything you need.

Good luck and have fun!

When it comes to gearing as you level, don’t waste money on the Trading Post. Use your Karma that you are earning by doing all those events.

In each area there is Karma vendors that sell level appropriate gear to the area you are in. These are the Heart npcs. After you complete their hearts, they turn into a vendor that sells you stuff for Karma. Some of them have gear that you can buy to help fill the slots of gear you don’t get from drops.

But like I said, don’t spend it on the Trading Post to gear up. It becomes addicting and you’ll be buying new gear every few levels if you get into the habit of doing that. Then you’ll end up broke by the time you are 80. Just stick to using Karma, since you will get a ton of it as you level.

As well, doing your Personal Story along the way rewards you with level appropriate gear. That will also help with gearing up here and there and getting some nice xp to help level quicker.

So what I’m getting from this is to basically buy equips from the karma vendors right? They seem to usually just sell trash like materials and the such…

And I read through that whole guide, just thought I’d ask with a personal approach ;p

Yeah like I said, some of them sell actual gear for you. Others sell random stuff that isn’t useful to you at the moment though.

Just keep an eye out for the ones that actually sell gear though.

You can mostly just equip stuff you loot as you go along.
If you find your armor and weapons are lagging behind your level, you can buy blues off the trading post. Blues are better for leveling because, despite having lesser stats that masterworks, these will not become soulbound when you equip them so you can sell that back on the trading post when you outgrow them

If you have a few gold, then just buy masterwork armor and tickets of the trade post, until you reach level 80. As you level up, look at your character and try to fill out the stats that you are low on. Then when you are level 60, you can start shaping the build that you want to make. That’s what I’ve done while leveling my characters up in WvW.

I would suggest using the trading post every 10 levels or so, to fill the gaps from karma items.

The green items are pretty cheap (about 1 silver each), and you get more than enough cash from events.

Also keep an eye out for groups that do dungeons (they start at level 30). You can start gathering dungeon tokens early on, which will allow you to buy a few exotic items later on. It will save you some gold, and you’ll get tons of experience along the way.

If I were you, I wouldn’t waste the karma on weapons/gear. I leveled to 80 and didn’t buy any gear until about 60ish and, even then, only went with either blue or green stuff. Even though there isn’t much to spend karma on, you will find it useful if you ever decide to go for a legendary or, who knows, maybe anet will add some cool stuff to buy with it. You don’t really need to spend any real money on gear until you get your exotic stuff at level 80. I think I ended up spending 20ish silver total before that. You will find a lot of gear to use along the way.

The karma vendors also see exotic trinkets. If they are the stats you want you will need 252,000 karma for a full set (2 rings, 2 earrings, amulet, back). Then it is another 252,000 for the full karma set.

After leveling 4 alts to 80, here’s my advice: Use blue rarity gear and skip the 5-level intervals (i.e. don’t upgrade to lvl 5,10,15 etc. armor/weps) since those are crafted and have higher value. The others will usually be sold at 1-5 copper above merch value. Once you’re done with that set and upgrade to the next, your losses are well under 1 silver. At certain levels, greens are priced similarly, so pick up those if possible off of the TP.

I’d say save your karma in case you decide to get the exotics from Orr like Khisanth mentioned. It’s essentially a “free” way to get a full set so you can then spend your gold elsewhere.

I just looked up all the exotic short-bows and there’s so many choices in weaponry (even attribute specific ones). Anyone know what’s the easiest way to get Exotics? Someone mentioned that I can start to dungeon as early as 30, can I use those dungeon tokens in other dungeons? For example, can I use an Ascalonian Tear token instead of a Shard of Zaitan (now that I re-read that question, I feel like we can’t do that). The reason I ask is because the build that I want prefers another attribute.

Thanks!

Anyone know what’s the easiest way to get Exotics?

I’ll refer you to what’s now one of my favourite Wiki pages for gear: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats

The difficulty of getting exotic gear depends on the stats and equipment type. For most armor and some trinkets, Karma is probably the easiest method, provided that you do the daily and monthly achievements. After that, it’s a toss-up between dungeon tokens and crafting, assuming you have level 400 crafts (or trustworthy friends/guildies that can craft for you). Most exotics are overpriced if you get them directly from the trading post. For me crafting is easier than getting dungeon tokens because I can’t do the same thing over and over.

That said, if you’re like me you’ll be experimenting with builds and you’re better off sticking with Masterwork or Rare equipment and replacing it piece by piece with exotics.
