Okay, this will seem dumb, but while playing WvW, if I am standing on top of our catle, i can only cast spells directly below me on the ground outside of the castle.. It’s not even make 2 feet from me.

I just played a game and the opposite team had the same spell I was using, but they were on the castle and shooting it over a huge gap and over a bridge. (A very long way away)

Im just curious, is this something unlocked when you are a higher level?
I don’t know if I am doing something wrong.

The only skills where leveling makes any difference is siege equipment. The rest is just a matter of where you target.

Just to be certain, which spell/skill are we talking about? Some skills can be traited to have a greater range. And some skills look quite the same as siege weapons attacks.

Vertical distance counts as distance too. If you’re trying to shoot the ground from a castle wall, it may not look very far away if you’re just looking in terms of a horizontal plane, but the distance between the wall and the ground (the height) counts in your max range as well.

Its kind of like there’s an imaginary bubble around your character that expands in all directions representing your range. Both height and horizontal distance are a factor, and anything 1200 away from you in any direction (be it pure vertical, pure horizontal, or a combination of the two) represents your maximum range.

every spell has a distance range, displayed in it’s tooltip.
sometimes there is a trait to increase this range, usually there is not. You just have to work with what you pick to use. If you want longer range, switch to a weapon that has it.
rangers are better for wall defense/assault as they can have the longest range (outside of siege equipment), and you’ve seen how much range matters in siege situations.
