Hello guys, I have a Human Ranger level 4 and I’ve already did the heart missions to levels 1-6 in Queensdale and I can’t do the heart missions to level 7+ because its hard.
How can I level up from this point? how I should level up basically? just find new maps and doing heart missions? or there are some maps that I should level up there and not “find” by myself?
Can you please help me with this?

And I’m fighting right now with 2 axes that I throw on enemies, I should buy a bow or something? when I will use a bow?

Thanks for helping, Tal

A good idea is to move to another starter map and do the hearts/vista/PoIs there.
Go to Divinity’s Reach and near the central area you’ll see an Asura Portal (a pink icon on the map) after you exit it you’ll see many other portals, each one leads to the main city of the other races and from there their respective starter map.

About weapon it is a matter of how you like to play, I particularly like axes, but I know that Long Bow, Sword and Greatsword cause more damage.

Do you have the vista’s, PoI’s and skill points from the area’s you’ve explroed? If not I’d advise you grab those as well. Also harvest everything you run past (if you don’t intend to craft you can always sell the materials). If you can get some low level food as well that will help as it give’s you +10% exp from kills.

With my Ranger I prefer Sword/X (X being dagger, axe or warhorn depending on where I am) but it can take a while to get used to. You can use bows pretty much everywhere. You also have the option of Greatsword and Shortbow. If you’re enjoying playing with Axes then stick with them (off hand axe is great!).

Ok so just do what I can to my levels in Queensdale, and after this move to another main city and do there and after this go back? this is how it should work for leveling as fast as I can?
And how I fight with axes/swords if I’m Ranger? I should fight with bows no? so why you choose to be Ranger if you fight with swords? its better? its kinda wired.. because Rangers should be stronger with bows no?

First thing I do is:
Explore all cities using the asura portals in Gendarren.
Go through the portal in Rurikton to Ebonhawke and do all the hearts/vistas/POIs in the city. Do not activate the skill point at the bottom left, and DO NOT ATTACK THE CHICKENS!!!
Make the slightly perilous journey from Gendarren Vigil Keep to Lion’s Arch. Keep to the paths and RUN if any enemies are alerted.
Once LA is done, go south to Bloodtide and follow the path to the camp there. Do the skill points in that area. Then take the balloon to Lornar’s and get the skill point in the Priory.
WP back to home city and do personal story till I reach my character’s current level plus one, and then finish my starter zone.
A quick, and relatively safe way to get to level 15 in a few hours.

Edit:
Once you have all the points of interest/vistas in Divinity’s Reach (don’t forget Salma District which can only be accessed by the gate on the inner ring), go through the purple portal in the centre to get to Gendarren.

Killing enemies that haven’t been killed in a long time gets you BONUS XP, which can sometimes be almost as much as doing an event!

Be sure to use apple and wrench buffs (food and potions), as they give you +10% XP from kills.

Sword is the highest damage weapon for a Ranger. Bows let you stay back while your pet kills things. Bows are generally very weak, but while leveling they do allow you to stay alive since you aren’t getting hit by the enemies.

Don’t forget to do the Dynamic Events (orange markings on the map), Vistas (red triangles), Points of Interest (tiny brown dots that turn yellow when you go near them), get skill points (blue pointy figures) and gather plants, trees and rocks you see. This all gives EXP and ignoring it leaves you underleveled for the hearts in a map. If you don’t feel like doing all those and you just want to do hearts, that’s totally fine but be prepared to switch between multiple maps of the same level range.

Sword is a mainhand weapon. And no they’re not stronger with bows. It’s weird but works out that sword is one of our strongest weapons.

so why you choose to be Ranger if you fight with swords? its better?

When I started playing Ranger I used Longbow. Then I used sword and found it be more fun.

its kinda wired.. because Rangers should be stronger with bows no?

You’re looking at as ranger = ranged class but ranger is more to do with the fact that they wander over a particular(ly large) area.

EDIT – Also as GuzziHero says if you go to Ebonhawke please do not attack the chickens. It’s good fun the first time but after that it’s not cool.

Yes, also do your Personal Story (the green quests in your top right corner), try to gatherer as many materials as possible (copper, wood, etc) and craft also gives a good exp, you can craft your weapons and armor, it is a bit more expensive than buy directly from TP, but will help with leveling and in the future you’ll want to have high level of crafting to make ascended gear.

And how I fight with axes/swords if I’m Ranger? I should fight with bows no? so why you choose to be Ranger if you fight with swords? its better? its kinda wired.. because Rangers should be stronger with bows no?

That is where ranger get negative views in GW2, new players come wanting to play as ranger think that we are Archers, but for unknown reasons, rangers aren’t that good with bows, so many players get either frustrated or keep playing with sub-par builds.

Sword is our best DPS weapon, LB have high damage but is kinda slow and cause less damage the closer you are are from the target, and in GW2 there are many gap closer skills, so there is a niche where LB is useful, also in parties if you use bows you’ll tend to stay far from the bosses and the rest of the party near if, so you end not getting/giving boons in the party.

Think rangers not from other MMOs, but from table top RPGs, in D&D 3.5 ranger can go for archer path or the “strider” path with dual wield weapons, in LotR Aragorn was a ranger, think about it ;D

Personally, I do well enough with a bowcaster spirit build. Its my dungeoneering choice using Drakehound and Raven or Hyena. The shortbow has the fastest ranged fire speed in the game and doesn’t aggro enemies unnecessarily like the thief shortbow does, and longbow #2 and #5 are highly useful for making enemies vulnerable and crippling them en masse. Along with Opening Strike on pet and ranger, I can lay down hideous amounts of vuln on enemies, making it useful for group play. LB is also pretty much required for Claw of Jormag with its range traited for 1500.

Solo, however, I prefer sword/axe or GS with SB or LB and signets.

And as Belzebu says, ranger is more in terms of ‘outdoorsman’ or ‘nature skills’ rather than solely archery.

Swords are the best direct damage option. Shortbows are the best condition damage option.

Normally people will use Sword/Dagger + Longbow on direct builds or Shortbow + Axe/Dagger on the MUCH RARER condition builds. Long range is often a bad thing in dungeons and whatnot because you’re out of range of the party’s buffs, and they are out of range of your buffs; also, unequal aggro sharing via range also means they take your share of damage as well. In direct mode players spend almost all their time in S/D, while in condition builds players will swap to use skills off cooldown if being aggroed, or camp SB and backshot targets nonstop if not being aggroed. Since both maxed options include a bow, I suppose we still end up using them…

Also, don’t forget to choose a good pet. Their damage does not depend on your stats – which gives pure condition damage rangers a direct damage option via the cats, and pure direct damage rangers a condition damage option via the devourers.

Exploration, gathering, and dynamic events.

Exploration is easy XP and you get it even in cities. Go into Divinity’s Reach and 100% explore it. In Queensdale, make sure you get all the POIs and vistas at your level.

Get your gathering tools (axe, mining pick, sickle) from a merchant and gather all wood, ore, and herbs you see. They give XP as well as gold when you sell them on the Trading Post. You can see the gathering nodes on your mini-map.

Dynamic Events are unique to GW2 and can be a lot of fun. They’re designated by orange map icons and text on the right side of your screen. They give XP, some coppers, and karma. If one pops up near you, do it.

As others have said, sword with either dagger or warhorn off-hand are you best damage options. Axe/axe is fine as a secondary weapon set once you are higher level and can trait for increased axe damage.

Something very important for you to do ASAP is find and collect your pets! For a ranger, having the right pet options is almost as important has having weapon options.

Quite a few pets can be found in the cites, so no combat is required while looking for them. More can be found in the various starter (lvl 1-15) maps. Some pets are in high level maps, so you will need to level up before looking for those. One pet is in WvW, so you will need to go in there at some point.

Sword is the highest single-target damage. It’s possible to kite a lot of mobs and then just use the Axe mainhand auto-attack instead.

Sell everything you find and only buy things that you need (get at least blue power equips + whatever power trinkets you can find). You don’t need to gear every time you level, but it’s probably nice to do every 10 levels or so.

To level up fast, always use the mobility Signet.

What I generally have is this:

Sword/Warhorn (look back, use Sword 2 then activate Warhorn 5)
Swap to
Greatsword (for Greatsword 3 leaps around the map)
Swap back

When you won’t be grouping mobs together, use sword. When you will, use axe.

Is there any specific mob that gives you more troubles?

For direct I’d still use sword. The Cleaves already hit three targets. The axe also hits three targets. The sword has a multiplier of 2/1.8 seconds. The axe has a multiplier of 0.5/1 second. It’s slightly more than double the damage for the same stat levels. Only reasons I use Axes is the Bleed awesomeness of Splitblade (up to 15 bleed procs on one use) and the complete lack of any other condition damage applying weapon.

If using Sword/Warhorn note that Warhorn skill 4 plus Rampage as One elite will give your pet a very high instant might stack (SEVENTEEN stacks).

Frankly, I wish there was a dagger mainhand weapon that could grant 1 bleed stack on each auto attack hit, even if it doesn’t Cleave.

I love levelling rangers.. 1 @ 80, 1 @ 70, 2-3 in the 20’s and 1 @ 4 right now. I always use lb/sb because I like the mix of long range to stay out of danger and fast firing for lots of tags.

Maybe this isn’t the recommended approach, but it works for me. I have 80’s in all classes and Ranger is my favourite, even though I spend more time on my guardian.

Swiftness is vitally important.

Didn’t read the thread, sorry if something got mentioned already.

1. Complete all hearts, gather everything, explore everything, do personal story missions (the green star thingy), do events. With these you can level up pretty quickly.
Personal story missions gives ~25% of your level worth of XP and events gives around ~7%, so it’s worth to do them.

2. Don’t ever try to farm in Queensdale. While it’s a great method to level up and gives decent loot, it won’t teach you anything about the game. Go out in the open world and explore it. Trust me, it will be a great experience.

3. Don’t rush to lvl80. See above, explore.

4. Weapons. Ranger is ranger, not Hunter or Bowmaster or Ikillyoufromfar. Ranger. Police officer of nature, if you like. Or think about Aragorn.
Get a greatsword and a sword / warhorn set. GS will have a mobility skill, a block and a high damage, vulnerability stacking ability, while S/W will give you swiftness to run around faster and a lot of evades in combat. Well, the auto attack is clunky on sword, but you will get used to it.

5. Get all the pets you should need. Here is a list where you can find all of them.
I suggest to get a Jaguar, Jungle stalker, River drake, Red moa and a Brown bear if you don’t have one. The two cat gives high damage, the drake is kinda tanky and has aoe, the moa can give Fury which will be useful later and the bear is the ultimate tanky pet, but try to avoid using it all the time.

And watch this video. If you have any question, go on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oGtY69tcek

edit:

About the weapons part. General rule in this game, that ranger damage is less than melee, with a very few exceptions. Also melee weapons cleaves 3 targets at the same time by default, so only by this fact it outdamages ranged anyway. Thirdly, skills that apply boons (buffs) have a small range so it’s really beneficial to stick together to you teammates which is easier in melee range again.
Don’t be a bearbow, please!

By the way, how I should train and level up? which method is the best? I will get lost if I will just “explore” the game and don’t explore specific maps, like starting with Queensdale and than move to another. This is how players get level 80? exploring maps? how should I begin?
Now I’m exploring the main cities of the races, after this I will do what GuzziHero told me to do.. I will try this.

A bearbow is a Ranger that only uses bear pets and sits at 1500 (max) range with a longbow. They’re frowned up on in dungeons and instances where they become pretty useless.

Simplest way to level. Explore all the cities. Explore Queensdale 100% (you can see this when you open your map). Move to Kessex Hills (south of Queensdale) when you’ve completed Queensdale. Complete Kessex 100%. Move to Gendarran Fields (north east of Kessex Hills) complete that etc.

Below is the link to the list of maps. Work your way through Kryta and by then you’ll have a solid plan on what you’re doing.

Using a bear and longbow, pew pew to a single target from a mile away with low damage and often knock it back to further screw up with your group.

Just … explore. The personal story already holds your hand where to go and maps have a minimum and maximum level, so you can get an idea when you can level there.
If you are close to or above max level, you can still get XP there, however it will be a tiny bit lower, than on the appropriate levels.
Zones are made for leveling, if you “outlevel” Queensdale, you can continue the leveling process in the surrounding areas.
Oh and one other thing …
Do what you enjoy most in leveling. Even if it’s efficient, not worth it if you are bored to death. Or roll an alt! It never hurts to try different classes early on.

First of all, loot. If you are lucky enough, mobs can drop stuff for you. If not, change your gear at the Armorsmiths and Weaponsmiths at every 5-10 level.

Try to get gear with Power main stat. After a while gears will appear with 2 or even later with 3 stats, so you should go for Berserker gear with these stats:
Power
Precision (crit chance)
Critical damage (this will be renamed to Ferocity in the next patch)

If you reached lvl80 and want to gear up yourself with Exotic (orange) gear, you can do a lot of stuff.

  • The easiest way is to buy it from the Trading Post for gold, but it’s very unlikely you can afford it as a fresh lvl80.
  • The second easiest is to run a few dungeons. As a ranger you will struggle to get in a party, since rangers have a really bad reputation to the overwhelming amount of bearbow players, but … The cool part is, that dungeons gives tokens, which can be used to buy exotic armors or weapons and they give a nice amount of gold each day. Just buy doing a few paths like AC1,2,3, CoF1&2 and maybe CoE1,2,3 it will net you ~13.5 gold + what you get from other loot and it can be done fast.
  • The third way is to go in WvW and buy gear from Badge of honor. You get these from killing players, but i don’t know if you are interested in PvP in any form or not.

Any other question?

Fourth you could craft the gear your self. Although a new 80 will probably not have the items required but the option is still there especially if you’ve been crafting as you go along.

Yeah, those are common white items, so it’s possible they aren’t even better than your current gear, but when you are so unlucky, you have the option to upgrade it in a cheap way.

Of course you can get gear from the TP too, but as i said, it’s cheaper. Don’t waste your money on crap. After you are level 80 and understand the game more and see the big picture, you can decide what to do with your gold. Until then i would just save my money. =]

Basically yes. Go around, do events, complete hearts, do story missions, complete every map. You can go back and do other starting zones too, whatever you like. Everything gives XP in this game. Literally. If there would be an option to fart, that would give XP too.

And seriously, gather everything. Gathering gives stupidly lot of XP and you can sell the materials. Oh and upgrade your gathering tools, higher level materials needs better tools obviously. But almost every merchant sells them.

Oh, and try to salvage everything you can’t use or sell for a good amount of coin.
Merchants sells them and the Basic salvage kit is enough for everything except for Rare and Exotic items.
Those are better to be salvaged with Master or Mystic salvage kit, if you can afford the later one.

Thanks for helping me so much man, I appreciate this..
I just don’t understand how I will “understand” more the game if all I do is just heart missions and exploring, except know where each zone is and which levels should I train there… Which professions do you recommend me to took? professions that gives money/important things to me.. and how to train this profession? (Example: Smiting, just mining ores and keep them and than just make Armour).

Because when you’re level 80 you will know how the game works – ways of leveling, getting gear, making money, the reason you’d want to do Personal Story or complete maps and you’ll know your way around the world.

Crafting disciplines are nice for gaining EXP, but they can be pretty costly in either materials or money for a newbie so don’t feel the need to keep up with your disciplines as you level as that will be really hard. The best gear in the game comes from crafting so in my opinion you can’t go wrong with a discipline that makes the armor and weapons you want. Check this wiki to find out which crafting disciplines there are, how it works and what you can make with them: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Crafting

So which should I take? because I know that Rangers better using swords/greatswords, so I don’t think I will go on Huntsman, so maybe leatherworking/tailor and weaponsmith?

As someone who is new to the game, I would advise to stay away from crafting, except maybe cooking.

The loots that you get, while you can use deposit all collectibles, probably are better sold on TP. One of the common mistakes that newbies make is to delay getting involved in TP.

While you can get cheap whites as Dalanor suggested, you can also try to make buying orders for the next 5th level in the TP cheaply and possibly resold for a profit after you’re done. But make sure you’re buying blue items.

If not, buy them off TP and then resell after you no longer need them and you’ll be looking at very cheap price for an armor upgrade (kinda like a rental fee).

I don’t understand how I continue to Ebonhawake, its zone for level 30-40 and I’m only 8. I can’t do there the hearts missions and the skill points.. and the POI’s because I need to go further more inside the Fields of Ruin and I’m low level.
So how I continue now?

In Ebonhawke, there are some missions (destroy Seperatist posters to the north, repair damaged turrets to the south) and dynamic events (herding cows), that do not require combat. Because you are in an area that is so much higher than your own, the rewards scale up, so if you can keep your wits about you and avoid combat (aka only do the tasks that do not require you to fight), you can get quite an XP boost.

Basically, stay in the city, and avoid confrontation. If a fight starts near you, get away from it

When you start a heart it gives you the information about it in the top right hand corner of your screen. I’m guessing what GuzziHero means is do the POI’s, hearts and vistas (don’t do the skill point!) inside Ebonhawke city then go back to Queensdale and finish stuff there.

I dont think its good XP, I found myself dead from one punch and I can’t play like this or do ther heart missions, and if I will explore the city its not much XP so I prefer to go there later.
Now I’m level 12 and I’ve already done all the heart missions in Queensdale that I can to my level, I should go to another map like Caledon Forest and level up there to level 17 and than just come back and finish Queensdale? or what to do? and after I finish Queensdale I should go to Kessex Hills or go back to Caledon Forest and finish it first? how should I train?

You can do whatever you want. If you’d like to finish Queensdale first you can easily do the last hearts as a level 12, and if you find yourself dying too much just do some personal story in between, it gives big chunks of EXP. Or if you are sick of Queensdale go to another map, whatever floats your boat. There is no set way to follow, the game is designed so that you can do whatever you want and you’ll be fine – you won’t miss out on anything or whatever.

Yes but what is the quick way to level 80? I’m now level 13 and I’m doing heart missions in Caledon Forest to level to 15-17 and than finish Queensdale, but it takes me so much time, I’ve played hours and hours in the last days but I don’t leveling up. Its just me or this game is very hard to level up on, or it just the start is hard, or what?
You all leveled up to level 80 just from exploring maps? doing all this POI’s, SP, Heart Missions, Waypoints? Just farming all the maps til the end?

Personal story, crafting and dailies give relatively better experience too. Sometimes, jumping on a karma train in WvW. You would’ve been easily level 80 before you even complete your personal story.

Leveling from level 12 to level 13 is as fast as from 79 to 80, so yes while it may feel slower than other MMO’s in the beginning you won’t hit a wall of EXP requirements growing exponentially as in other MMO’s.

And yes, I just completed maps and did my story until level 80. I also dabbled a little bit in WvW and dungeons, but not much. But you can level from dungeons and WvW too if that’s your thing.

Others touched on this: You don’t need a “quick” way to 80. The game pours xp and levels on you like mana from above, as long as you’re doing all the activities. Once you’re 80 you’ll be doing pretty much the same things you did to get to 80 (some even complain about the lack of endgame). Sure you’ll have all your skills and better gear, so you’ll do better in WvW assuming you’ve learned how to use said skills and gear, but if you rush you’ll miss a lot of the fun along the way.

Sort of like playing Skyrim for the first time and skipping to the final fight and feeling like you’ve got nothing left to do. Exploring the world is a lot of the point. Take your time, go off the beaten path, listen to the NPCs, keep that thrill of discovery going because there’s always something new to see.

edit: Note there is no leveling curve. The first 10 levels or so are relatively faster, but then it’s a flat rate. Once you know the game you can get a level an hour, be it the 34th or 80th.

So the leveling is the same if its 11 to 12 and 79 to 80?
I just thought that the game is basic “starting” from level 80, like WOW, you level your character to level 90 and than play PvE/PvP for better gear and stuff, the leveling is not the main thing, I think its the same in GW2, you level to 80 and than the WvW is the main thing, than you train and play for better gear.
How much time it takes to level up to 80? If I’m exploring maps all the way? I think its will be boring just explore maps and do the same heart missions all the time no?

Its can’t be possible… I have completed all the main cities, Queensdale and Caledon Forest, and I did a lot of events and still I just level 16! And in the games it is written “Queensdale 1-17” They actually thought that this only map will level me to level 17? I don’t know how it works but I think that its cant be true.. you did this too? just farmed like that all the maps? I have played hours today and I just level 16.

There is a levelling curve, it’s just very mild.

And actually, levelling at higher levels can be much faster than at lower levels, because certain content like dungeons become available which you can’t do earlier on. A single dungeon is 0.7 levels guaranteed, often 0.9 from mobs… and it only takes 10-15 minutes to do an easy one.

The heart missions are different for every map, but whether or not you find it boring depends entirely on you. Some people will find it boring, some will find it nice.

Cities give very little exploration xp. Clear normal maps and do every single event you pass by. Often, doing certain events also simultaneously clears a heart – then gives you three sources of xp – one from the mobs, one from the event, and one from the heart.

It takes 8 days, relaxed. The first time, before you understand game mechanics your play will be inefficient, and so everything will take longer. But it shouldn’t take anyone more than a month to get to level 80. After that it becomes a lot faster. I can probably 80-level a character in 5 days now through map exploration alone, which is about 45-48% of the world depending on which maps I do. Full-exploring a map takes anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes, depending, while Lornar’s Pass specifically takes 140 minutes because of how large it is relative to everything else.

To start you off, I’ll give you 3 mechanics.

Cleave – This applies to most melee weapons except daggers on most classes. Necros have no cleave at all. Elementalists can cleave with Lightning autoattacks on their dagger mainhand. Cleave means that you can hit up to 3 targets in your front arc at the same time.

Pierce – This applies to some ranged attacks, and some other attacks can be traited to pierce. It hits up to 3 targets in a row one after another, doing full damage to all 3.

AoE – This applies to pretty much anything that creates some kind of field on the ground. It will hit up to 5 targets per ‘tick’.

Killing enemies one at a time is extremely slow. Draw the attention of several targets then kill them using these three mechanics to up your kill rate by up to 5 times.

Incidentally, a bomb engineer can train faster than an axe warrior in some cases just because the AoE hits 5 targets while Cleave only hits 3, even though they do less damage per attack.

You can learn more later as time goes by.

You haven’t done the whole map. The hearts are a tiny part of the map. You need to fully explore, do events, gather materials from nodes, craft stuff, everything. The hearts are vestigial sign posts for people in need of classic quest hubs.

If you look at the daily achieves and try to do 5 of them (you can do less, or more), you get a good xp bump for each one plus more for finishing the 5th one. Even low characters can do them. I tend to do them on whatever alt I’m leveling and generally get a lot of a level in a few minutes thanks to those.

Killing mobs that aren’t part of an event or a heart is probably the slowest possible xp source out there, btw. Use them to skill up weapons or to earn credit for other things, but do not expect to see your xp progress just because you killed ten centaurs.

WvW doesn’t have to be your main thing. I had 8 level 80’s and had been playing for over a year before I even thought about stepping into WvW. Gotta say it is awesome and would highly recommend it but still I was having fun doing other things. Running dungeons, killing world bosses, exploring the map etc.

With regards to this part I think I got to level 80 around Straits of Devastation (Level 70-75 area). Also don’t just do the Hearts. There are POI’s, Vista’s and Skill points to be acquired in each map.

I know I don’t said I do this kind of thing. And when I said that I explore the map, I explore it by doing all the hearts, POI’s, SP & WP, and I did harvest/mine/gather everything in my way, probably not everything, but a lot. And I did this in those two maps that I explored.

So you say I’m in the good way? I should now go to Kassex Hills and explore it, and when I feel that I weak for the hearts just go to another map and start it and than came back? and just every zone that I move to I should explore to the end at least two maps? This is the fastest way to level to 80? and do dungeons in the way?

About crafting I don’t sure, I’m a human ranger which profession do you think I should take? and how I train those crafting effectively? Because I’m sure that I can’t train it effectively with items that I earn from drops and more. And which professions should I take? that will give me money/XP.. or something

Yes do Dungeons when you can.

For a Ranger crafting would be either Huntsman or Weaponsmith depending on what weapons you’re using and Leatherworker for armor.

Crafting is easy to level up. Each recipe tells you what you need to make the basic components (inscriptions and weapon parts) then you combine these in the discovery tab (there are 4 tabs when you open a crafting window. Discovery is the top one)
