There are money sinks every where in the game. Repair bills, way point costs, the cost of experimenting on the mystic forge, upgrading keeps and guards, buying siege equipment. I think I lost over 2 gold this week playing WvW alone due to repair and upgrades…

I can’t farm an area for precious rare to find crafting materials for more then 30 minutes without having diminished returns. There are only a few areas in the world that drop the tier 6 crafting materials to begin with and they are usually highly farmed at all times.

Events get repetitive and rarely offer more then 1 silver. The majority of them are bugged at times. It has also become significantly more difficult to “tag” waves of mobs in hopes of getting loot because they die so quickly.

I don’t have the time to craft high level items and sell them on the trade post for a profit because farming for materials is already difficult enough and very time consuming since the drops seem to be hit or miss after 30 minutes.

I have never had more then 10 gold to my name, I find myself in an endless cycle where the only way I can make money is to repeat events with magic find gear on over and over and over again.

How does a semi-casual go about making money?

Let me just state that I spent 3 hours farming today and have nothing to show for it. It’s like moving at a snails pace. I don’t feel any sense of accomplishment when I farm for hours on end or spend 4 hours doing events only to end with around 40 silver…

Only 10 gold? Just dinged 70 and have 20 gold in my bank. Not to mention having bought 3 training manuals, abyss dye, white dye, and all my armor up to date (all 7 pieces, 3 weps, + upgrade runes/sigils/trinkets.)

All I do is explore the world, zone by zone, farm mats via gathering tools and sell everything I get via merchants or TP. For me, I generate 1-2 gold per map easily and that’s just casual play. If i were to go out and purely farm/do DE’s I could more than likely make more.

I’ve put maybe two hundred hours in now (“just playing”, some WWW, dungeons, the whole ensemble), and have a full exotic set of armour and weapons, but no “end game” jewellery.

Making money is not easy, but it can be done, but it’s not easy and you’re not going to end up with hundreds of gold any time soon. Gather everything, loot everything and sell everything.

Minimising your waypointing, minimising your spend on AH, and being rigorous in gathering can go a long way to help.

But no, I am not going to be “rich” any time soon, and I think it’s designed that way.

From the noise generated about DR there is probably a problem there, but personally speaking I haven’t hit it yet. I can make a gold porting to the most south westerly waypoint and killing everything I see / taking part in all the DEs I encounter, and gathering everything I see just running to the next zone. That’s my “farm”.

I then spend it waypointing to try and get 100% but that’s another matter :-).

To the OP, you didn’t “lose” 2g in WWW, you spent it. There’s a difference.

I’m not sure what you guys are doing to trigger the so called anti-farming code, but let me just put my results from killing the same 8 alpine skelks in Frostgorge Sound.

I tracked the tier 5 crafting mats, tier 6 crafting mats, and rares in 15 minute chunks, and farmed for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The results are in the format:
a-x-y-z
where a is the number of the chunk, 1-5, x is the number of tier 5 mats, y is the number of tier 6 mats, and z is the number of rares. I had some magic find but not a huge amount, and lost 40% of it (eating buff) after the first hour.

1-4-2-0
2-4-1-1
3-7-2-0
4-12-5-1
5-9-0-0

Easily within the streakiness of a random number generator.

So what are you doing to trigger the anti-farming code? I’m killing a limited number of the same spawns, and doing it for way more than the 1/2 hour described. Are you farming far more mobs or something?

Wow, ridiculous. I’m level 41 and I have 3 gold already. You’re 80 and have never had more than 10?

I haven’t even put any effort into making money or farming for even a single minute. Just questing.

All I do is loot everything, salvage everything, and sell it once I get a stack of 250 of anything. Not that hard. Also sell dyes, which I couldn’t care less about, but people pay top coin for.

I’m in almost full yellow gear at level 41 because I have so much money I don’t know what else to do with it.

If you really want to know how to make money, get on youtube and type in a search. I see tons of videos about making money in GW2 even when I’m just searching for reviews or other GW2 videos.

I had around 11 gold by the time I hit 80. This is after buying the rare 50 and 65 sets, celestial dye, 15 slot bags, and leveling my armor and weaponsmith to 400. Never once did I play like it was a job. Spent it all on crafting a full exotic set(no jewelry or 2nd weapon set). Helped a friend level from 50-60, and found myself with 4 gold again.

Not sure what you’re doing wrong… Just work towards your map completion, don’t TP when it takes 30 seconds to walk to where you’re going, use the mists -> LA trick to get home for free. Never TP to a home city. NPC 70+ greens and blues, DE yellows and sell the globs. You’ll have cash in no time.

I got 2 exotics worth around 1g20s a piece in mats after completing the 60-70 zone that I didn’t count here, too.

Everyone complains about not having hundreds upon hundreds of gold sitting in their bank.
What do you guys really need all this gold for?
You can outfit your char in ‘endgame’ stuff by running no cost dungeons , or no cost events in the world.
I have yet to find something in this game that requires tons of gold, besides the cultural vendors…which I dont think were put in with the intention of people getting the full set 1 month out from the start.

I find that salvaging everything will rob you of money.

Sell the grey, white and blue items if you don’t need the materials. Green items, only salvage if you want the enhancement. Yellow, sell on the TP if you don’t need it or use in the Mystic Forge. Otherwise sell it to a vendor if its not TP profitable. Salvage items are good for salvaging. There are plenty of gathering points on the map and goodie bags that drop from enemies that you don’t really need to salvage everything you get.

You’re doin it wrong. I’m being very crude here, but I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else having the same issue. These are the things I’ve learned. Here are some of my tips to getting and keeping money.

#1. Suck less, die less.
The less you die the less you have to repair. (I agree that the repair cost is extremely high at max level it seems.) Spend more time learning your character, how to avoid deaths, and how to kill as many things at once as you can.

#2. Know the areas.
If you’re going to begin farming, do some research on where the best places to farm are. Feel around the zone for a while, learn the types of mobs you’ll be fighting, and move your skills around to best suit those. Again, refer to rule #1.

#3. NEVER use the Mystic Forge if you want to make money. The Mystic Forge is for fun and gambling, not making profit. Sell/salvage your blues. Sell/Salvage your greens. Never put nice, silver+ items in the mystic forge.

#4. SELL ALL YOUR CRAFTING MATS. Okay, this one can go differently for different people. If crafting is your game and you love doing it, awesome! Make some cool items for you and your friends, sell the stuff you make, and have a good time doing it. Crafting is not a good way to earn money though, remember that. If you aren’t into the whole crafting thing…then refer to rule #5

#5. SELL YOUR CRAFTING MATERIALS. Seriously. If you spend a decent amount of your leveling experience gathering materials, hitting nodes, and looting bags, you should have 5 gold EASILY of materials in your bags when you hit 80.

#6. BE CAREFUL when you sell things on the TP. Check how much the stack sells for vendor price, and see how much its selling for on the TP. THEN CHECK THE LISTING FEE. Almost always you’ll find the lower items are selling for the exact same thing as vendor price, but you will also have a 2-3 copper listing fee which means you LOSE money selling it on the TP. Just always be careful when you’re selling stuff.

#7. Don’t do dungeons with idiots. If his name is Xxsephirothx or LegolasButtface he’s going to suck. People that suck are people that die a lot. When people die in dungeons, YOU WILL PROBABLY DIE TOO. Find a group of friends that are competent that can perform well in dungeons. Dungeons are AMAZING cash if you can get through them with a maximum of 2-3 deaths.

Hope this helps..

I disagree—

Always check the TP before NPC’ing your items. Someone might really really want the item you have and be willing to sell it for profit to you. Make sure to take the 15% into account before you decide.

Whites, if it’s lvl 75+ and chainmail, I salvage to try for ori. Otherwise I sell. I’ve sold lvl 10 acolyte stuff for 30-80c because it can be salvaged into jute (which is only going for 20-someodd c when I checked)

Blues I personally sell too, but you might salvage for crafting mats and sell those if you want.

Sell greens worth over 1.5s. Under 1.5s, if it’s something that might result in a high-demand crafting mat, salvage. If not, sell (or gamble with the mystic forge).

Golds I sell to TP if over 20s. Under 20s I master-salvage for ectos.

Exotics same except 50s+

Never had money problems. I’m not a farmer that get 50 gold but my little bank is at a good 5 gold level by now.
I try to not use waypoints, so I travel a lot and I do the events during the path. The repair costs aren’t expencive and, clearly, you aren’t supposed to die a lot or you can find the way to die less times.
About WvsWvsW, you should play with a group and don’t take the costs alone.

Here’s a question that somewhat relates— I noticed the money sinks as well but they are not an issue for me. I am not playing the game to make money, but I did notice I am not making much. I am level 40, and if I didn’t repair, travel, buy things I don’t need, etc. I mayyyyy have made maybe 4 gold.

The question is this: The reason most people are not making much money is because the game is new, right? We don’t start the game with loads of gold, we have to get out and generate it from mobs/rewards, etc. so for now the general wealth of the population will be low, correct? Until the game is out for months, years, so on and we as players have generated the gold circulation?

This is my first time playing a game from release so I was just curious. Economy in real life is beyond my mental capacity/attention span and for the most part it is in-game as well. Like someone said before…. I’m not trying to play Wallstreet in a game with fake money! But it was something I was always curious about when I began using the AH in Azeroth.

Not going to tell you how I make gold; However, I will say I can easily make a few gold playing the trading post, buying low and selling high. For example, last night I spent 1 gold and 28 silver on some items, and after a few moments I then resold and got back my 1 gold and 28 silver and made a 2 gold profit. Of course, I’m not always that lucky and sometimes I lose money, usually a profit though.

The reason i’m not telling you what I do is, cause there’s only a few of those items and only few buyers to boot.
