I don't understand the new trait system
Check out this video. Explains it.
Always up wind from my prey. I want them to smell my farts!
Um can someone actually help me? That video only explained how traits work when you’re level 80, it didn’t say how or when you actually acquire trait points or how those books work with trait points you acquired. Like i’m level 10 and didn’t get any trait points.

You get slot skills from level 1-30, unlocking slots 7, 8, 9, and 10. Then once your #10 slot is finally unlocked and you have your Elite skill, you start getting trait points. After this you receive about 1 point every 5 levels, for a total of 14 at lv80.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

The new trait progression can be found on this wiki page.
Any char created before the feature pack will have all the old major traits unlocked, but any char created after will have them all locked (also applies to the new traits added with the feature pack).
Unlocking traits requires either completing some content (events, dungeons, etc) or spending coin + skill points to buy the trait from the profession trainer.
You no longer have to buy books to unlock the three tiers. Trait books that you bought before the feature pack probably don’t have any particular use anymore, but I could be wrong about that as someone was buying them on the TP.
So I can’t use those trait books until I’m level 30?
You no longer need the trait books at all. :-)
The only thing they did was to unlock the Adept, Master and Grandmaster tier major traits…and this now happens automatically for free when you level up enough.
Unless the old trait manuals somehow convert into the new trait guides, I don’t think they have any use after the feature pack.
Still, like I said, I could be wrong about them no longer having any use…someone was buying them on the TP but that could be an old order that was placed prior to the feature pack and never removed.
Nothing has changed with skill acquisition.
Major traits are now unlocked either by doing specific content or buying the guide for that particular trait from the trainer.

This shows at what levels you unlock trait points. The only thing that’s changed is there is only one trait point now for every five of the old points. It used to be you’d get one every level, starting from lvl 10. There might not be trait books anymore but you still need to visit your trainer if you want to buy the manual for a GM trait (or you can just do the event that unlocks it).
Ok. Here’s the simplest I can explain it:
- Trait tiers unlock per patch notes (ADEPT @ 30, MASTER @ 60, GRANDMASTER @ 80).
- Trait points unlock per patch notes.
Level 30—1 Trait Point
Level 36—1 Trait Point
Level 42—1 Trait Point
Level 48—1 Trait Point
Level 54—1 Trait Point
Level 60—1 Trait Point
Level 66—2 Trait Points
Level 72—2 Trait Points
Level 78—2 Trait Points
Level 80—2 Trait Points
Actually unlocking the traits depend on when your character was CREATED:
- Created BEFORE patch release – ALL Traits will be available for use when you unlock the tiers EXCEPT for the new GM skills (XIII) that need to be earned or bought.
- Created AFTER the patch – ALL Traits need to be unlocked via earning or buying (per costs given in patch notes).
I am unsure if you can earn (or buy) Traits prior to the tier they belong to being unlocked (via leveling), but I am guessing you CAN earn them early (so they will be available when you unlock the tier via level).

i feel badly let down again by Anet , why was there a need to change the unlock system
although my compaint is that to remove or allow a good boss timing system is a real kick
in the teeth especially to those of us with multiple chars . I have all 8 characters , did anyone of you think about how difficult you have made it for us to get those trait skills in game :{{ , and i will not pay hard earned ingame money or skill points , everything seems to be geared at taking away the fun of gaming , like the game can only be played by people who are ultras , i woulbe interested to know your thoughts on the timers subject ,
infact alot of people just as frustrated would
You only have to unlock the XIII Trait if the character already existed….it’s not that big a deal. Now starting a new character will be a bit of a different experience and (IMO) better.
How is not fun to go out into the world and earn the traits you want as you level up?
Now I can understand those with mid level characters reacting badly to how the Trait points unlock now, but I understand they are trying to give players incentive to go out into the open world rather than level up at a crafting table or in a Champ Zerg (which is still possible now).
Only if starting a new character will the leveling up experience be drastically altered. If you didn’t like leveling up as before you can still do it and only spend the money to buy the Traits you want.

I don’t know about the lower tier traits but they did screw up on the grandmaster traits.
Karka queen? Spawns 3 times a day, if you can’t make it for those well too bad.
Promenade of the Gods? Wait around Cursed Shore until the event shows up and hope everyone around agrees to let the event fail. Same for the other temples. Slightly better for Grenth and Melandru but it is still standing around waiting for who knows how long. That is also what new players/characters have to look forward to.
Alternatively you can go farm the gold and buy the guides because gold farming is just so fun and exciting ….

The most expensive trait is only 3 gold, and most of them cost 1 gold. This is a only single boss kill worth of Globs of Ectoplasms salvaged from rares.
Existing characters have no room for complaints. Newbies who wish to unlock all their traits with gold must pay 50g and 400 skill points. Most of my characters don’t even have 400 skill points even after an entire year of heavy play.
The gold takes two days to make ….

Champ loot bags still give out free skill points (scroll of knowledge) fairly frequently.
Whether or not this is a good thing depends on what you think of champ trains…
If you are level 80 and need to “farm” for 3g, you are in sad shape. In any event, “farming” for that gold would also get you lots of other items you likely need once you reach LVL 80 anyway. If you just go clear zones you can get 3g in a few days of moderate game-play.
I will concede that some of the choices for events / bosses for the new skills are potentially questionable, but the fact that they give everyone another option to obtain the skills makes that complaint moot.

I had lvl 80s that used to used to ask for gold (before the patch) because they didn’t have enough to repair their gear. I ran with a guard for TA a few days ago who didn’t have a staff, when asked he said he only had scepter because he was too poor to buy anything else. If you run any dungeon (2 paths at most) you get 3g easily…

I think both those examples qualify as “sad shape” and likely fall into the category of players that don’t know how to manage their money. As you stated, it is NOT hard to make money in this game and nobody is hiding how to do so from any player that simply asks.

400!? My main 2 year guardian have 500, I’m glad that I farmed most of pvp gear and made all alts before that patch because I would be screwed.
