Q:

So the Sylvari are supposed to be based on Celtic/Irish mythology. I myself am not Irish, but I had the idea of naming my Sylvari “Polasal” wish is based off the the Irish word for “*-hole”.

Obviously, it’s a swear in Irish, so I need your thoughts on whether or not I could get banned on this.

I have a stupid handle, didn’t know what I was thinking.

You don’t get banned for naming violations. At worst, you get suspended for 72 hours. More likely, since your name is ‘just’ a swear, you would get a forced name change if someone reports your name. Why risk it in the first place?

On a different but related note: poll asal doesn’t sound or look even remotely Irish to me. I wouldn’t trust Google Translate with a ten-foot pole.

If you have to ask, then you probably shouldn’t use it. If someone reports it for being inappropriate (or if someone from ANet reads this post), they’re going to make you do a rename.

There are plenty of other words in Celtic that are unoffensive. I suggest using one of them.

I googled the term Polasal, nothing came up so it must be a very old term (or you mispelled it). So in that regard I would think it would be safe.

Though if someone from that area knows of that word, they could end up reporting it. Or the trolls on here will report you now anyway because they now know what it means.

I would contact a GM/Customer Support and ask them, if they give the okay then ask for a note on your account giving the green light for this.

Otherwise I would play it safe, maybe use the celtic/irish word for rude or jerk.

Why on earth do you feel the need to name your alt that in the first place? If you care enough to find a word in an old language (I’m something of a scholar in A/S myself, so all power to your elbow!), why not find something better to translate? How about “awkward one” or something? Probably conveys the sense you want, without risking someone else who recognises an old language (or runs across this thread!) reporting you.

Well, the full word itself is actually “Poll Asal”. Of course, I merely used Google Translate.

Heh, I put it through the bing translator and got “The original poll” in Indonesian. So who knows. But anyhoo, as you want to use a word based off it, I can’t see how that’s an issue. Maybe if you wanted to use Ifu Seekamy, I can see how it might (key word there) be inappropriate.
I spose it all depends on whether a reasonable (key word again) person may take offence.
