Q:

Hello Everyone!

Back in 2012, I decided to pre-purchase a game full of things to explore and create. Guess what, that is exactly what Guild Wars 2 delivered. Although there was a slight issue that I came across in my journey in Tyria. I noticed that the end game content was mostly revolved around PvP (Player Versus Player). I have not tried any of the previous Guild Wars and picked it up at number 2, so I had no idea what I was going to get myself into. It was at this point where I realized that I was not cut out for PvP and made the decision to drop my new game and continue where I left off in the few other MMOs that I played.

The thing I do actually enjoy about GW2 is that it doesn’t hold your hand as much as other MMOs do. I know the game has been updated to make early game a little less of a hassle when compared to launch. But as much as I love freedom, I have found myself lost. In my personal opinion, Guild Wars 2 gave me so much freedom that I have gone off track and now reached a point where everything I do is the inefficient way of doing anything. This may not be true, as many people claim that you can do anything you want and it will benefit you. I still feel as if there is something out there that stands out more than the rest that will benefit the players more and I have no idea what it is.

I read guides and listen to tutorials all the time. I do google searches and I watch youtube videos. After about 3 days of searching of what exactly it is that I should be doing to proceed in this game, I still have no clue. I feel like I heard it all, but it still just does not click. I started doing fractals since I heard somewhere that at 50+ you have a chance at being rewarded with Ascended Gear. I’m still working on that, but I still feel like this isn’t the correct path. My end goal is not to be fashionable, but I hear that raids are pretty difficult and they seem to be my type of thing.

I understand that things change in this game, what may have been extremely good in 2012 isn’t as good in 2016. I’m sure all new players ask these questions, but here is what I would like to know.

  • As a level 80 (Necro) with full exotics (geared up through TP in 2013), what should I be focused on? What is my main goal that I should achieve?
  • I hear that “hardcore” players could quite possibly make 500g a week, while casual players end up making much, much less than that. What is a good way of making money other than purchasing it (I want to earn my gold)?
  • What are some good habits to start? (I have a copper-fed salvage machine, I almost always salvage my blues and greens, although if the price is right I will sell anything above in the TP)
  • Gear is important, why do I feel like I never run into any upgrades when comparing my new drops with the armor I bought in 2013?

Treat me as if I knew nothing. I would like any and all information how to become a successful player in this game.

Thank you all for reading this long post. If any of my rambling made sense, I will be excited to see what everyone is willing to share with the rest of the community.

I hope this makes sense, I need your help!

There is not real gear progression so the gear you had that was good from years ago is still good, best is a relative in this game. If your only desire is to make gold then I can’t help I only have fun gold is a sideline. Hot is what I am baseing my replies on but you can do PvP, WvW or fractals without HoT.
Go out, explore don’t worry about best until you can actually use what you have.
Necro is in a sweet spot right now, if you are geared up in exotics great armour is done. Get ascended trinkets and rings from Laurels, guild commendations etc and you can look for a training guild to start raids if you want or start at lvl 1 fractals and get everything you need to do top level by working your way up.
New maps are great, just explore and do events and you will get masteries in no time.
