I'm able to participate in a guild mission?
Yes, outsiders to a guild can still transform at the start of a guild rush and run the course. You will not get commendations but I think you can still open the chest at the end if you make it all the way through.
It might be considerate though, should you come across a guild rush in progress to enquire if they need any escorts to help them complete first, then once they have successfuly completed their rush and got their mertis you can use whatever time is left to run the course. If you just start doing the rush whilst they are still trying to get people through you may take up resources (speed boosts, heals, etc) needed by their guild members to successfully finish.

You can also just ask nicely if you can participate, just out of courtesy. I’ve done that and I’ve gotten a temporary guild invite, so that I’d get the commendations as well (and also so me finishing the course counted for them), but of course depends heavily on the guild’s recruitment policy. Still, even if you’re doing for fun, doesn’t hurt to ask first.
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
You can join guild missions even if it not one for your guild. As stated you will not get the guild reward (commwndations etc), but you will get the standard event reward (karma plus a few silver) and a chest.
Any person completing the run will count as one of the 15 the guild needs to get the merrits so this is a benefit. Also don’t worry you are stealing one of the guild members rewards as any guild member finishing the rush within the 30 minutes get their reward.
The same goes for other guild missions.
Of course its always nice to ask if you can join.

I didn’t know this was the case, have you tested this? What makes it a guild mission if any gw2 player can count towards the guild’s success?

A guild has to start it and pay the influence to make it go. But this game is all about being able to help and not kill-steal etc, so of course others can help get the guild mission complete. The merits and influence gained all go to the sponsoring guild, however.

It wasn’t clear that you could transform in one of the race-animals though, at least not to me. I thought you could only help the guild by clearing the path for them. Nice to know. I wonder if non-guildies can participate in other guild events too…
-) guild puzzle?
-) guild challenge?

While that is theoretically true, you should NOT try to help in a bounty fight unless you know the mechanics of the target otherwise it is likely you will cause the mission to fail.
