Hello fellow players!
I started playing yesterday, I chose to play as Asura Mesmer. But I have ran into some problems – I’m always seem to be underlevel. I am currently level 13. But to get there, I had to do quests that are 1-2 levels higher than me and it was really hard. I participated in every event that happened around me and of course did my personal story. Am I doing something wrong?

No the game is made like this so that you can explore. It is recommended you go and level in other races starting levels by going into lions arch and going through one of the 5 portals It’s a bit daunting at first but is the best way to go about it, also remember to gather materials for xp.

I just went to another starting area. Each city has a portal to Lions Arch. Once there you can portal to any other race city.

I started on the Norn area, then did the Human area. By the time I did both I was lvl 20 and smashed through the lvl 15-25 area.

Hope that helps

There are various ways to level up to the content you are playing – you can tour all the cities and gain xp from the vistas/poi’s/waypoints; you can gain xp from gathering resources and crafting; and you can visit the starter zones of the other races and do the events and hearts below your level.

You can also craft or buy food or other buffs for temporary boosts in difficult areas.

Start a crafting proffesion will boost your xp greatly. Hit up another starting zone or 4. Explore the cities. Do some WvWvW. Etc.

Why grind dungeons? Only relevant content…
Why? Gives needed gear…
Why do you need this gear? To do dungeons… duh.

Aha, that solves it then. Thank you for the quick answers, I didn’t think of that! Thanks a lot

Try completing the other races starting zones. In your main city should be an asura gate to Lion’s Arch. From there you can travel to all other capital cities.
I had the same issues like you and switching to another same level zone helped alot.

World vs World (accessed via. B as default) gives very good experience. Crafting also gives some very good experience. Both should be done at least occasionally as you level towards 80 to make sure you’re not getting behind in the zones, this is as far as I can tell intended.

There are a number of different zones at all level ranges and you can access all of them and explore all of them, getting around the world gets easier the higher you get in level, but the portals in Lions Arch can be accessed at any time as mentioned above.

I was usually higher level than the content I was working towards, and I progressed pretty evenly. I was leveling two professions though, so that was largely the difference (and all the farming for fine mats to level leatherworker and weaponsmithing Shiver).

It sucks but you have to go the the other starting areas too. I didn’t want to touch the other starting areas till I was out of my own. But story quests keep out leveling me so I guess I will have to do that too.

I wish I had this problem. I’m letting my personal story dictate what zones I go to, and I’m 47 and just finished Lornar Pass, though I’m still there for crafting materials.

It must be something specific to people who like to craft as they go, and try to keep themselves in the latest self-crafted armor (not because it’s superior, I have no idea really, just because I enjoy making a character that makes her own things).

I was actually excited when I saw posts saying that monster xp was really low and it was hard to level that way. Well, sadly that pours in quicker than expected too. At least it comes quicker than the items I need dropped, and at close to a silver a pop in the TP per item needing 3 and sometimes 8 a piece to make things, and only 1 gold (and desperately trying to hang on to that because I know I’ll need 2g at 60, which at the rate everything gives you experience isn’t all that far from 47), I just can’t afford it.

So I really wish I had your problem.

I also did quite a few DEs in the earlier levels. Far more than I do now. I try to hit my daily allowance and then mostly avoid them, unless I happen by one and only see a few people doing it, I figure that might get kinda tough so I help out. Or if someone shouts for help and I’m ‘relatively’ close (I’ll give you roughly 1/3 of a zone…and yes, I’m too cheap to use waypoints, I run everywhere. Another reason why I’m continuing to farm in Lornar Pass where I’m at, it’s not a bad run (well, first swim) to get through Bloodtide Coast and then into Lion’s Arch.

So keep your eyes peeled for DEs, and maybe try some crafting if you haven’t. Tailoring and Artifice are pretty tough to keep up, but I see a ‘lot’ of people cooking. There must be some fantastic synergy with experience or something about that which is crazy awesome.

Here is a tip from https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players:
32. If you’re getting into areas with mobs that are too difficult, but you’ve done all the other events in that zone (happened to me around level 20), check out the other races’ areas! You get scaled down to match the levels in those zones and can do all of their quests and events while still earning XP and Gear to match your own level!

I am on some during the day when I’m working (call center type stuff from home), so can’t really do a lot on renown hearts, dynamic quests, etc., but have been having a lot of fun getting completion on all the major cities … those will run up your exp pretty well right there. Also, bear in mind that some of these dynamic chains don’t have just one or two parts to them .. likely there’ll be more, so just wait around and see if something else starts up after finishing one .. you never know, and at worst, you’ll have had a chance to chat with others in the area.

I agree with previous poster, I got used to that green arrow showing me that I’m downscaled … OTOH if I see DEs or calls for help I almost always jump in and end up in another part of map, then is another DE (or chain continuation) then i get to some nicely bunched mats — heh my story q level is way below me and I now need to hunt for mats to keep my craft levels for making me stuff.

Has anyone else noticed that some of the starting areas seem harder to level in than others? For example, my Norn blasted through to level 5 without touching a couple of the quest-giver quests and before I’d even finished the winterthorn flower quest.. whereas to hit 5 on a human, I had to do all the quests and story quests to the point they were overlevel..
