I’m getting a new mouse and will probably follow the suggestion to keybind dodge to one of the buttons.

While you are thinking about a new mapping, consider also mapping the “back” (left side button) to shift. This changed my gameplay completely. Then I mapped out of reach keys like F1, F2, and others to shift + 1, … As a result, I use the space bar to dodge and shift+spacebar to jump.

as a Mesmer I find dodging completely useless as I prefer to stay away from mobs while my clones are doing the job, but well… in order to complete my daily, I just equip a sword and pistol, I get any mob and keep double clicking “move forward” button until I get bored – then I just finish it with my regular attacks. Usually it takes like 4 – 5 mobs to get my daily done.
Maybe this is not as professional as learning timings etc, but works for me.

Well, I’m going to try my luck here. I asked for some tips in-game and got nothing but a bunch of people calling me an idiot, telling me to press “V” and being trolls. I know /how/ to dodge, I just suck at the timing.

Any tips you guys can give me?
I think it is easier when you know the enemies really well, and know their timing, but going up against stuff I havent spent a long time killing, I never do it right.

Well, first I’m sorry you were yelled at, but I get that too, for seemingly completely benign questions, but I digress.

There are two things wrapped up in your question, and I’m not sure what we are to be answering? Are you asking to become better at dodging to get the daily achievement done or dodging to avoid damage? To me, they are two ‘totally’ different propositions.

Before the daily dodge came around, I have successfully used to dodge to avoid getting hit by a ‘lot’ of things! It’s what keeps me alive, and I’m sure many people. I still like to use my directionals, and have never had a problem dying in a jumping puzzle accidentally using them, by introducing a bit of patience, and for those puzzles where you can’t use patience, well, I don’t do them…but all aside from the point.

Getting better to precisely dodge at the exact point needed to trigger the achievement is a totally different thing. If you are wondering how to do that efficiently (besides go build a Ranger and use a greatsword and hit 3, or whatever button it is, especially if you don’t have a Ranger), I’d recommend worms that stay stationary and throw rocks, for a few reasons.

1. They don’t move once you attack them, they just sit there and wiggle around until they decide to throw a rock.

2. You can find many that aren’t near other monsters and are relatively safe to just stand around and focus at the task at hand.

3. The wind up before the rock throw is really noticeable and long.

4. Stand pretty far away from the worm, as you will want to dodge once you see the rock in the air coming at you (if you dodge during the wind up, the rock will find you when it comes out).

That’s pretty much it. Because the wind up is so long, it’s plenty of time for your [always forget the name of the stat] to come back so you are ready to dodge again.

Not really sure if V works on this, I’m sure it does, you’ll want to check ‘behind’ you if doing that. I prefer a double-D right dodge myself, habit, I’m a counter-clockwise circle strafer. And I like to run the few feet back to where I was standing when I started each time to minimize picking up other mobs, since I had already scouted the area before starting.

If you are 80, there’s some great worms in Frostgorge that allow you to stand out on the road and dodge there. No other mobs other than yellow small worms that will only join in if you hit them with something. I often get double-points when I dodge from the worm as well, not sure why. And you can either finish the big worm when you are done, or leave him to wallow in non-mobility shame.

Practice. However if you are attempting your daily, The EASIEST mob to dodge is one that uses a bow and arrow. (Thier name eludes me). The animation is blatent and all you need to do is, dodge to either side as soon as the animation begins, and it will be an evade. No need to time anything.

Daily completion: Golden Moas. Aggro 5, wait til they start hitting you with their channeling skill, then roll, you’ll get like 10 dodges even if you fail.

Practice: FotM is a good place to practice. That and people will res you if you fail usually so it’s not as punishing if you mess up a million times. But once you’re good, it’s also helpful for running it.

Alternative: Roll mesmer or guardian. These classes have projectile blocks that make it so that you don’t have to dodge as much. Or you can go with elementalist because it has like a million dodges built in.

Trick: Go guess your lag. For some reason I have to dodge about half a second before the projectile hits or it’ll hit anyway, so slowly preempt more and more until you’re well within the ‘zone’ of dodging.

Hylek poison darts. you get 2-3 each avoid. regular Hylek mobs shoot in sequence. from my daily’s experience, the hylek dart pattern is:

shoot one dart
1 second pause
shoot one dart
1 second pause
they jump in air or wind up (obviously mad by then)
3-4 dart attack

thers a small camp with 2 hyleks near a campire, and if you get them to attack at the same time, it almost doubles the num,ber of evades

the hylek boss at Morgan’s Spiral shoots them, too. you can avoid them until you get enough, or die first (his darts seem a bit OP).

I personally like to go to the Blazeridge Steppes zone at the Brokentooth Waypoint (Northeast from where the Shatterer spawns). and fight branded scorpions to the left of the waypoint. They ALWAYS attack at range and shoot very easily dodgable spine attacks. Each one hits twice, so dodge one and you get credit for 2 every time. Even the laggiest player in the word should be able to get it from these things.

Personally I like Ice Elementals for dodging. There range attack is fairly slow if you keep back from them and there’s a nice long delay in their AoE attack.

I play a mesmer and my biggest problem is keeping an Elemental alive long enough to get a couple of dodges out of each.

thats why i like the branded plants, you dont have to hit em and there damage patch is constant, thier damage is low and they wont chase you.

Really? I still get a lot of aggro, even with the clones (Even Decoy sometimes doesn’t seem to work properly… I’m stealthy and I still get hit). I do use my shatter skills a lot though, perhaps that’s what makes me a target sometimes… .

Now each time you see that animation (and trust me, you will begin to see re-used animations) you know what to anticipate.

That’s the tough part for me; I have a lousy visual memory. If someone swapped all my armor for other random pieces while I was logged out, I’d never notice it. I’ve fought foes for minutes without ever being able to tell you afterwards if they were male or female, my friends have a running joke about it. Spotting specific animations and remembering them has turned out to be very challenging.

Then, it doesn’t help to have below-average reflexes (tested at a science museum, sigh. . .).

How do you guys survive dungeons, wvw or even open-world pve without dodging? o.O

Just fine

I cannot have the option turned on because i have twitchy fingers. I have died to it on may occasions in jumping puzzles and whatnot.

I think the end is going to come down to practice. You just need to find an enemy that telegraphs attacks very well and just start getting better at dodging them, really. There’s not really a quick fix tip for getting better reflexes.

So turn off double tap dodge (like you very well should anyway) and use a keybind.

As at least 3 others have said, do not use double tap to dodge but rather use what ever key you have dodge hotkeyed to (probably v) and push it while moving in whichever direction you wish to dodge into. Pressing v without moving will cause you to dodge backwards. I actually liked double tapping to dodge but it is just too slow compared just pressing v while moving in my prefered direction. Obviously having it hotkeyed only requires one tap while double tap requires two taps.
