I’ve been using basic salvage kits to salvage level 70+ whites, blues, and greens, based upon research I’ve done on the matter. These sources say the basic salvage kit has a 10% chance to produce tier 6 mats on level 70+ items. I’ve done at least 50 such salvages and have obtained 0 tier 6 mats. What gives?

At this point it would have been more cost effective to vendor those items.

I’ve little experience on the matter, but my guess would be that some of those materials come only from salvaging rares (yellows) and higher.

Chance, is what gives. A 10% chance means each time you salvage, there’s a 10% chance that it’ll be a tier 6 mat; that doesn’t mean that it will necessarily average out for you doing it lots of times, probability still allows for unfortunate luck sometimes. If you’re doing a lot of salvaging, I’d recommend using the more expensive salvage kits, you’ll get a lot more out of it.

A note would be to salvage whites and vendor blues/greens. They all have the same chance of giving you high level mats but the blues/greens vendor for a lot more then the whites so you end up making more money that way.

Better yet, if you’re doing a lot of salvaging, throw a blue, green and yellow salvage kit into the Mystic Forge, plus a Mystic Forge Token, and get the awesome Mystic Salvage Kit.

The benefit in not having to re-buy kits as often is worth the price alone.

Not to mention that at 250 uses, the cost to return ratio for Mystic Salvage Kits is simply incredible. I’m planning on making a few as soon as my characters are high enough level for it to count.

definitely get the mystic salvage kit. that being said though, i still really only use it for high level rares where i’m looking for ectos. if there’s a rune i want for sure, then i use the black lion kit. i vendor greens and blues (i don’t even check the TP for greens anymore, but that’s just me being lazy, or you could see it as i rather jump on the next event and get more items? ; )) lol), and for white items, i use the basic or even the crude salvage kit and i’ve gotten high level items from these salvages as well. the ratio isn’t great, but i still get gossamer, etc from salvaging whites using just the crude kit. so i guess a lot of it is luck of the draw. i’ve ogten noticed sometimes i’ll usually get silk from white cloth items say. and then all of a sudden, i’ll see 2 – 3 gossamers. then back to silks for a while.

that being said.. best of luck to you!

My napkin math says that with the situation you described, 1 in 200 times performing 50 salvages will net you 0 t6 mats.

Not uncommon enough of an occurrence to determine anything statistically relevant.

Other than you have just experienced bad luck.

Why grind dungeons? Only relevant content…
Why? Gives needed gear…
Why do you need this gear? To do dungeons… duh.

Huzzah! 10 salvages of a white item later netted me an Orracalcum Ore! And now I vendor most blues and greens as folks suggest. Thanks all!
