I was wondering if there is any way to get more reads/+1s on a post in an area that is rarely visited? For example: I have a Short Story that I was writing which just doesn’t get much read time compared to others in the Fan-generated Content Forums.

  • Is it maybe that it is too long for people to care to read?
  • Might it be that people have very little interest in FanFic?
  • Possibly a poorly chosen title?
  • Or might it be as simple as “It’s just not good enough to merit a +1”, which is fine too. (I am not a writer by profession and was just puttering around with this story)

The reason I am asking is I have written some small FanFic stuff in the past which has gotten a bunch of positive feedback in contrast, so your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated

If you’ve written fanfic which was well received before (presumably when posted elsewhere) I’d guess that the problem is not many people on this forum are interested in reading it.

It’s often been said that the two most common types of people on the forum are those who are annoyed at something in-game and coming here to complain (then maybe posting on other topics while they’re here) and those who like the game and cannot play at the moment, for example because they’re at work.

The first group are not going to be interested in reading fanfic and the second probably don’t have time to commit to reading an entire story, or even one chapter.

That’s my guess anyway. I have to admit I usually forget that the fan generated content section even exists and when I do remember I don’t look at it, so I don’t know what type of responses fanfic usually gets.

A very astute and concise proposition, thank you. Actually, my previous submissions were written in the same forum in question, which brings up my quandary, though usually they were only a page at most of reading.

As for the two types of people, I guess I fall into the latter; only on the Forums when I am not able to play the game. The difference in your example thou is I have my entire lunch hour to read the forums and am striving to find other’s original thoughts to consider. But hey, you may well be correct. Hopefully, it is more of a lack of time than a lack of literary skill on my part.

Any other thoughts?

Try posting it in other fanfic specific places.

AO3 is one of the best multifandom archives. They use invites to keep spambots down, but there’s no requirement. Just request an invite and they usually turn up within a day: https://archiveofourown.org/
Fanfiction.net is one of the oldest and best-known: https://www.fanfiction.net/game/Guild-Wars/

If you have accounts on LiveJournal, Tumblr or DreamWidth those are also good places to have fun with fanfiction. I don’t know anything about GW2 fandom there, though.

Maybe also posting it in your guild forum and asking for feedback?

Gilosean: All good suggestions thanks but alas those sites are blocked by our proxy which is managed by our Network Admin.

Already discussed with guildies, we are a small guild so very little feedback there.
