Where do I buy the up to date equipment from?
While leveling you can buy equipment from Heart vendors after you complete the heart (costs karma) and the Black Lion Trading Post (other players list items to sell). You can also craft your own gear by using mats you collect along the way.

Thanks for the tips Ill look at that link now!
First of all, do NOT play a Mesmer or Engineer as your first class. I’m not saying they’re bad or not fun, but they’re tougher to get the hang of than most of the other classes. You want to save them for after you’ve gotten the feel of the game in general.
Second, is to always have gathering tools with you. Everyone gets a shot at resource nodes in this game, one person mining up copper doesn’t mean you can’t mine it as well. Harvesting gives a little EXP, and you can either save it for later crafting use, or sell it.
Third: Do your dailies and monthlies. You can get the rewards from the PvE OR the PvP one, but not both. They award jugs of karma (useful) and laurels (very useful).
Fourth: Travel around and explore. You’ll be leveled down if you’re in a lower level area, but you still get Exp in those areas, and some of the drops will be set to your real level. If you have fun with this, then level 80 will eventually come to you, no chasing required.
And finally, feel free to hate Trahearne. Seriously, there’s a lot of hate for this NPC, and if you do the personal story, you’ll eventually find out why. Do the personal story anyway, it’s good Exp and rewards. Just realize that once he shows up, the best part of the story is over.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Your basic leveling up experience will be exploring maps (there are multiple for each range of levels), completing hearts and doing events, with Personal Story missions every few levels and a dungeon each 10 levels starting from lv 30.
Hearts are similar to traditional quests but you often have different kinds of actions to achieve the same goal : you could help the local fishermen by killing dangerous drakes or by catching fishes, for example.
Events (orange UI) are sort of an innovative way of doing quests. Most of them aren’t started by talking to NPCs but are on a random timer or start happen particular conditions are met. Most maps also have big chain events called meta-events that end up with a huge boss fight.
Personal Story is a series of istanced missions that explain the main plot line of the game. Each character has different missions based on his choices, but variety diminishes a lot at high levels (60-80).
Dungeons have two modes: story mode is an easier version that tells the story of a group of heroes you will meet, while explorable modes are harder and generally meant for lv 80 players. I suggest you do story modes while leveling up, but keep in mind that dungeons in here are a lot harder than open PvE content.
GW2 has 2 PvP modes: Structured PvP, and World vs World.
Structured PvP is an entirely different gamemode in which everyone is automatically set in even footing : you are raised to lv 80 with everything unlocked and given the best in slot equipment. You can try it whenever you want but the start may be rough.
Joining World vs World raises you to level 80 but does nothing else to improve your performance: you’ll be able to do something but you won’t be nearly as strong as a lv 80.
Personal tip: don’t focus on leveling up fast, enjoy the ride. The game won’t change much at max level and you will have the same plethora of activities to choose from. Gear cap is relatively easy to obtain too, and isn’t overly important, so take a deep breath and immerse yourself in one of the best MMO worlds I’ve ever experienced.
Sorry for terrible formatting!

I recommend taking lots of screenshots. Lots and lots of screenshots. I have screenshots going all the way back to my first GW characters in 2005. From time to time I’ll look through them and be reminded of all the people I’ve met along the way (some of whom are still around) and all the fun we shared and silly stuff like that.
Bunch of small things. You can deposit crafting materials directly to the bank from your inventory. For completing Heart Quests, your reward is sent to your mail, click the button at the bottom of the letter to get your money. There is no player to player trading, everything is done through Black Lion Trading Company. Unlock all of your weapon skills at a low level, and play around with em to see what you like (make sure to unlock your underwater skills too). There is no “healer class,” meaning that you are the one responsible for keeping yourself alive.
There are three “currencies”. Standard money. Karma, which is rewarded for quests, and used to purchase things from Karma Vendors. And Laurels, which is used for lvl 80 Ascended gear. Crafting gets you experience, but it can be really expensive. Reviving NPCs and other players also nets you experience. There is no “competition” for resources. That is, a single resource node can be mined by everyone. XP and loot is given for participation, and you won’t lose out if more people join.
Click on the crossed swords at the top to “Enter The Mists” (PvP). From there, you can take a portal to Lion’s Arch, the central hub of GW2. Lion’s Arch also has portals to each race’s capitol city. Probably the cheapest way to travel large distances, and really useful at low levels.
Most importantly, don’t rush to level. Unlike other MMO’s, it doesn’t take a tremendous amount of time to get to 80. You really don’t need to spend any time grinding. Sure, you can join with a zerg of players and smash through content super fast and level quickly, but the game is more enjoyable to just run around with 2-4 people and do whatever looks interesting. Also, doing the daily achievement is good for money, karma, mystic coins and laurels. Have fun!
