Infusion + Transmute
You get another backpack and infuse that backpack then use a transmutation crystal.
At least unless you’re talking about infusing it via an infusion item in which case you just double click and apply it.
As esplen said you have to infuse another backpiece to do this. For example if you have a fractal capacitor that has the plush charr skin on it and you try to infuse it in the forge than the charr skin will be lost forever. you would need to get another backpiece, infuse that one than use a transmutation crystal to put the charr skin on a infused piece. If you could say what backpiece you have now and what skin it has.

I have the Tome of the Rubicon (uninfused) with the sclerite shell. Obivously I don’t want to spend another 60g on another tome if I choose to infuse. This is a real bummer.
Think of a skin transmutation to be like a sigil/ rune/ infusion. Do not use it with items you want to refine …
