When I started GW2 I made it a point to loot everything – whether to sell for coin or use. Naturally this gets to the point where my inventory is always full now and I’m not sure what to drop and what to keep/sell.

Attached a couple of pictures, please help thanks <3

If you click on the gear icon in the right top hand corner you can send collectibles to your bank. That way you don’t lose them and free up space. You can access your bank in any of the major cities as well as from crafting stations.
You can also buy or craft larger bags.

Thanks, managed to bank a lot of items with this! But of course my bank might fill up next instead, what exactly are those items for I don’t find the descriptions very clear.

This is how I would handle my inventory as a brand new player to GW2 based on my personal needs and experience…

1. Buy bigger bags. 10-Slot will only cost you @ 1s each so I’d go for those right out of the gate.

2. Use the Deposit All Collectibles button in the upper right hand corner of the inventory window (Gear Icon). *Better described by Grassrab above.

3. Go to a Merchant and click on Sell All Junk as those are useless otherwise.

4. Sell or Forge

  • Whites & Blues = Sell (or salvage with a Basic or Fine Salvage Kit if crafting is an option)…I usually salvage anything under a certain sell rate such as 50c and sell anything above.
  • Green < 70 = Sell
  • Green > 70 = Forge
  • Yellow < Ectoplasm TP Rate = Master Salvage
  • Yellow > Ectoplasm TP Rate = Sell
  • Orange = Sell (more often than not)

5. Create a “Mule” Alt…call him Sammule…stock with 10-slot Bags…transfer long-term items such as boosters for later use.

6. Create a Guild (even if only for myself)…start upgrading towards guild vault.

But that’s just me.

This sentence is false.

Those items don’t actually go to your bank but rather your collectables, which is accessed via your bank and can usually hold up to 250 per stack of each item. They are used for crafting and once you get into that each ones use will become more clear.

A few other things:

You have Leather Bags, and you can get more space than that.

- Certain champions or veterans in starting areas can drop dyed leather bags which hold 5 slots instead of 4. In Queensdale there are four of these you can find very easily, though one is time-limited. See: “The White Lady”.

- Get a crafting discipline such as Tailor, Leatherworker, or Armorsmith and learn how to make 8-slot containers. All you need is the materials to do so. As you get higher you can make larger bags up to 20-slot containers . . . though, ummm, those take a huge gold investment so 18-slot is really “good enough”.

You have some white items, it looks like. There’s a way of dealing with that.

- Carry a salvage kit around, a Basic will do fine. Salvage any white or salvage item then send the materials to your collection. You can salvage anything higher than that at your discretion.

- If you find a merchant you can sell to, if you’ve got a lot of your inventory full with loot you don’t need? Sell it. Coin takes up no space or weight. Items take up a lot.

Hey Kari!
Like most off us at the beginning, i struggled with my loot management. But most off the good advice is allready told here
1) Buy bigger bags. I see that you carry 4 slot bags, and that is just a waste, they fill way to fast and you can very cheap get some bigger bags from the Trading Post.

2)Use Grassrab’s suggestion to send all your gathered crafting materials to your deposit bank. This is the space that everybody has and where you can store your crafting materials, both basic and first refinement up to 250 pieces. So you can store 250 copper from mining, but also 250 copper bars from refining them through a crafting station. That way you can gather a huge amount off resources. If you at a certain time can not deposit any raw materials, that means that the stock is full. You can then sell any excess you have on the TP (good money for low tier mats)

3) Some items you pick up have in their description a mention that says :Salvage Item. These are items that you “salvage” by using a salvage kit (basic is good enough) and by doing that you gain some crafting materials that you then can deposit again.

4)Every time you see a merchant, go to him, choose the sell button and then press Sell Junk. Those items will do nothing, can not be salvaged and take up only space in your bags. So sell them, gain some copper (or even more) and gain free space

5)For the rest, most items are not for your profession. If you plan to level another char and you find a really good piece off gear or weapon, keep it and store it in your bank. If you’re not interested in leveling say a cloth armor char, then sell the pieces you find on the TP or at a merchant.

In this way, you keep your bags open, gain some nice coin and have a much better time traveling Tyria!

On your Inventory panel left side are shown your various bags. The padlock at the bottom of the list indicates you can buy more Bag Slots.

It looks like to can buy 3 more slots (total. Same for bank slots.

400 Gems per bag slot; there is a current sale 20% off.

I don’t think more bags would be as good a solution as bags 100%+ bigger than what she’s got now. THOUGH if you are interested in bag slots or bank slots, indeed, now is the time to go get them. Before the Gem prices spike up.

Let’s not decide for other players what is best for them… just point out the options and let them play how they wish.

Indeed . . . though I just was putting that post there to caution away from throwing all money into Gems prematurely Having lots of bag space is awesome. Having no money and lots of bag space isn’t as awesome.

To the OP, what server are you on? I might be able to help you get started with some bigger bags when I go to upgrade my alts.

Well you always learn something new, for me it was the Deposit All Collectibles you find in the Gear icon in your Inventory screen, only a couple of weeks ago. I had been porting to cities or the few outposts that had crafting or banks to deposit for months.

Everything discussed here is excellent advice.

1) Deposit Collectibles
2) Sell junk whenever you happen upon a merchant, armor repair or karma NPC.
3) Salvage salvageables for collectibles and deposit those. So always have a salvage kit on you. (Same is true with gathering tools. Remember that as you explore higher and higher level zones you will need better and more expensive gathering tools so it’s not a good idea to overly stock up on low level ones.)
4) Buy bigger bags. As your bank grows invest in bigger bags.

Now all you should have left in inventory is items, mainly armor and weapons. What I do is call up the Trading Post, O key, select Sell and sort by price. Anything greyed out (has no buy interest) I sell those items to a merchant (I do this step BTW while next to any NPC who will buy stuff).

At this point you should only have items that are actually worth something to other players. I worry about trading these at the end of my play session when I’m usually at a TP, although you can do this anywhere at anytime. Whether you sell those items to the highest buyer or undercut the lowest seller by 1c or set a price somewhere in between, that’s up to you. Just remember that the TP takes a rather large cut. So don’t sell an item for less than roughly 20% more than the items base sell value, sell those to merchants to eek out a few more copper. Next time you log in you pick up your profits (assuming you logged off next to a TP contact) and strike off again for adventure!

Personal note. I tend to open goodie bags rather than sell them. However I do sell unidentified fine dyes directly to the market. 15-18s is rather nice for a low level character since you can use that money to buy BIGGER BAGS. :p

5 slot bags are roughly 5c each.
Basic 8 slot – 20-30c each
Basic 10 slots – 7-8s each
Basic 12 slot – 25-30s each
Basic 15 slot – 66-68s each
Basic 18 slot – 2g 50s each
Basic 20 slot – 12g each

As you can see it can get rather expensive. And by bags I also mean sacks and boxes. There are three crafting classes that build identical items in terms of what they do but they are called different things based on whose making them. Also besides basic “bags” there are specialty ones that certain items will be placed in first and also ones that any item contained within them will not appear on any sale screen, so you don’t accidentally sell those items in a zombie moment. These specialty ones generally cost around the same price to a little more.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

You can mail stuff cross server.

8 slot bags are very cheap on the Trading Post.
I found that after the first character none of the others really need a bag slot expansion.

20 slot starter
15 slot equipment
15 slot normal
15 slot craftsman’s
15 slot oiled

The above is enough space for clearing a map usually, along with visiting a merchant to sell junk whenever you run across one. Keep in mind you can always sell to karma NPCs and repair NPCs as well.

Cheapest extra space is to create an alt. Unfortunately it takes time to login and logout, and you still need space in your bank to transfer stuff to the alt.

Next cheapest are the 8-10 slot bags. 8’s good if you want absolute cheapest since they sell for about the same price you can buy them. Most people can probably afford the 10 slot bags though.

After that, most people start buying bank expansions. But there’s a cheaper option. If you form your own personal guild, you only need 2500 influence to get the 50 slot guild vault. You get 400 influence for completing the level 60 personal story quest, and 1000 influence for the level 80. That leaves you 1100 influence short. You can gain influence the normal way, but if you’re impatient you can also buy it. 1000 influence costs 2 gold at the guild promoter, so you end up paying 2.2 gold for 50 storage spaces. That’s a lot better than an extra bank tab which is about 12 gold for 30 spaces. If gems go up a bit more in price, it’ll actually be cheaper to buy the extra 20,000 influence for the 100 guild storage space upgrade vs. buying bank tabs.

The downside being you can’t put account-bound and soulbound stuff into it. On the plus side, if you pay for the upgrades (need Economy 2) you can access it anywhere, anytime for just 50 influence per use (10 silver’s worth) by using the Vault Transport option.

What works for me is taking a few minutes every so often to do this:

1) Deposit all collectables. This frees up a lot of space.
2) Sell all junk items. These are the ones with the grey name, but if you’re not sure just click ‘sell all junk’ when speaking to a merchant. You can’t do anything else with them so don’t worry about it.
3) Salvage anything marked as a salvage item, open any bags etc. then deposit all collectables again.
4) Check everything remaining for equipment I can use now or in a few levels and either equip it or move it to my invisible bag to save until I can use it.
5) Move anything else useful (ie. jugs of karma, dyes I want) to the invisible bag.
6) Open the trading post and sell anything which is going for more than the merchant price.
7) Salvage any remaining white items and deposit collectables again.
8) Sell everything left to a merchant.

Combined with the fact that only carry a few boosters/consumables at a time (I keep any spares in the bank) and only have extra salvage kits or gathering tools when the ones I’m using are about to run out it means I rarely need more than my starter backpack and 1 other bag. Although I also keep bags in all my slots they’re just ones I’ve found/made while levelling crafting, most are 5 or 8 slots.
