I’ve recently acquired 300 gold and I am wondering if it would be worth investing in the commander’s compendium or not. With HoT coming up I’m sure the gold could be useful, but I do notice that when I run SW event maps commanders can be a bit hard to come by…not to mention HoT maps might require some organization, So I am curious for anyone that is a commander, is becoming one at the hefty price of 300 gold worth getting for PvE content or should I just save my gold?

If you are a WvW commander or a guild leader it is quite worth, otherwise not worth it.

I wouldn’t pay 300g for it. I got mine back when it was 100g. If you are not hardcore WvW or Ina big guild that is short on people with tags for guild missions, its really not worth the price as it really gives you nothing.

It depends on what you like doing.

A commander tag is basically a sign on the map to say ‘something important is happening here’, with the added (but seemingly rarely used) benefit of a dedicated chat channel for people who want to participate in that activity.

There are a lot of situations where that’s useful, such as guild missions, Silverwastes/Drytop events, WvW obviously, showing people where things they’re trying to find are and so on.

But whether it’s worth getting for you depends on how much time you spend doing those things. If you’re constantly finding yourself thinking things would be easier if you had a tag, or depending on someone around you having one, then yes it’s worth getting. If you’ve never really though about it until you were looking for a way to spend 300g then no.

I’d also recommend looking into the new mentoring system that’s being added with HoT as it sounds like that will work the same way in certain situations, or even be the better choice.

IDK I do run silverwastes a ton and having a commander tag would be very helpful, for the longest time I have wanted a commander tag but never had the gold for it, but now I do have the gold for it, but now that I do have the gold for it I don’t know…it really doesn’t have alot of benefits, another thing to consider as you said, the “pact commander” mastery track that you can unlock for 0 gold and might be even more useful…IDK I think I’ll hang on to my gold for now, and if HoT comes out and Commander Tags are more useful then I’ll get one, but if they aren’t any more useful I just won’t bother

I have a commander tag and I’ve only used it during g-mish when I’m first to spot a bounty or the only one who knows a route. I’ve never needed it to help in silverwastes or dry top (I just use links to PoI/WP).

HoT is adding a mentor mastery, which will offer something similar for PvE so you might just want to see what that’s like.

Finally, if you just now acquired 300g … I’d recommend that you squirrel it away (hide it in a personal guild bank or on a buy order for Sunrise) and save it for something that will be game changing for you. That might be a really special skin that comes to the TP or gem store, a convenience item, or a gift for a friend.

IMO, unless you command every day for hours, you can get by without the tag.

It really depends on what you want it for. The status symbol or can you actually use it?

I bought mine before mentor tags were announced to do mentoring (calling attention to myself on low-level maps with ‘why is that arrow over your head’). It was a bit annoying when people later got it for free, but hey. I also use it when I am organizing an event so people can tell who is part of the zerg and who is coordinating information.

I bought mine because I wanted one. I don’t use it very often, but whenever I do, I’m glad I have the option.
