Is it easy to make gold?
If you want to take your time and have fun, yes. If you want everything yesterday without grinding, no.
Making money is most easy if you don’t focus on making money, as crazy as that may sound.
Delayed content is eventually good. Rushed content is eternally bad. ~ Shigeru Miyamoto
Everything I have purchased from the gem store has been with in-game gold. Minis, dyes, bank expansions, clothes, etc. I don’t think it is that hard to make the gold for such things, but everyone has their own opinion about this. I don’t farm, or run dungeons, or anything. I do sell off items I get from loot on the TP, and make a few gold a week that way. I have gotten my ‘end-game’ gear just from drops, and I don’t grind, as I said. Many people purchase their armor and weapons off the TP.
Welcome to Tyria, may you have many enjoyable adventures here. =)
Very easy to make gold. All the game is designed in a way you can make gold very very fast. All you need is a credit card.
Zorish,
There is an old saying. “It takes money to make money.” While this is certainly true when talking about people buying and selling on the BLTC auction system, it also applies to PvE. By the time that you hit 80th level, you’ll be dealing with content in the final zones of the continent of Orr. For these zones, life will become mucher easier once you’re in at least Rare gear. This costs money, but will help you earn money.
1) Once you kill a zone boss with a character who is lvl 40 or above, you’ll get a bonus reward chest. (This bonus chest is once per day on your account for each one of the bosses.) People who are desperately poor often farm all of the lvl 1-15 zone bosses and the dragon bosses. Between standard reward chest random loot and the guaranteed Rare gear piece from the bonus chest, you can make some decent money once you’re around 60+ in level.
2) Due to the influx of Rare items from the bonus chests, buying a full set of 80th Rare armor will actually be quite cheap. (It’s far cheaper to buy a set than it is to make one.) Even if your armor upgrade slots (aka Runes) don’t match, the gear’s armor value and +stat values are mor than worth it.
3) Your next goal is to buy an Exotic weapon for your primary weapon slots. Depending on the +stats that you want, a random 80th Exotic weapon will only cost 2 or 3 gold. With the income from the daily bonus chests, you can buy an Exotic every few days.
4) Now that you’re in a bare minimum set of gear, you’ll be in good shape to start running dungeons, farming open world content, and grinding for karma. Pick a gear set of +stats that you like and see if it is sold from one of the Orr karma merchants. If they do sell the +stats combination that you want, then each armor and jewelry slot item will cost you 42k in karma. Or if your chosen combination isn’t covered by a vendor, then you can make / buy them from the BLTC.
5) Selling Unidentified Dyes is good money. You should be able to sell them for 16 or 17 silver. If their value is too low, just save them and wait until the market is more favorable.
6) Selling raw crafting materials is always a good source of money.
7) Selling the Daily Reward coins is another good income source that people overlook. You should be able to get around 4 silver for each coin. (You only need these coins when you start to crafting high end appearance weapons and other special upgrades in the Mystic Forge.)
There’s this ATM in game called, citadel of flames (aka cof p1). Don’t worry it only takes 5-10 min of your time. Requirement you ask? Just be lvl 75+, that’s it, no skills required, so easy a cave man can do it.
Making gold in this game is actually quite easy. The problem is that there isn’t much fun stuff you can buy with said gold. Most of the best armor, weapons and trinkets are obtained not through gold, but through running predetermined dungeons and content for days on end in order to get enough tokens to buy what you want.
Also, as far as loot is concerned, there is very little interesting loot that drops. Rare items are usually just chests with random chances of salvaging for ecto. Exotics drop so infrequently that there is almost a 0% chance of getting one. And precursors are even worse.
If you want any cool gear in this game, be prepared to grind away at potentially mind numbingly boring content for days on end because DR (Diminishing Returns) kicks in which is a developer imposed mechanic that limits the amount of tokens you can farm in a day so as not to let you get toward your goal too quickly.
Making money isn’t very hard in this game. Gather material nodes as you play and sell everything you gather on the TP. You’ll have plenty of gold for your manuals and armor/weapon upgrades every 5-10 levels. Masterwork gear is insanely cheap on the TP. If you want to level a craft, then you might have a harder time amassing money. At this stage, they’re a gold sink. Run dungeons. Not a lot, not non-stop. Just run them a couple times as you unlock them and you’ll get enough money from drops to keep you going. Also, DEs are the way to go, not hearts. Which isn’t to say don’t do hearts, just do DEs as they come. They hearts will always be there. But DEs chain, give karma & money & better XP.
If you want the kind of gold to buy a precursor well….I ain’t got that kinda money, I ain’t got that kinda advice.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
1) Create a warr or mes
2) Reach lvl80
3) Buy full berseker armor and weapons
4) Cof p1
5) Repeat point 4 over and over
Or don’t worry too much about the gold, because you don’t really need it. You’ll get enough cash for your bank/inventory upgrades, and everything else that’s expensive is just for looks anyway.
Welcome
Nice, very informative posts everyone, even those that were a bit troll xD
I like to know this. I’m having quite a hard time killing mobs at my levels, I don’t seem to do enough dmg for them to die!
But nice to see so many replies, it shows how active and helpful this community is!

What’re your tactics? Is your gear at least within 5-10 levels of you?

It depends on your playstyle.
If you like grinding dungeons or living with the problem of being ganked in WvW then yes it’s easy.
If you are one of the thousands they attracted to this title with the promise of playing the way you want to without being hindered then no it’s not. Open world PVE loot still is lacking.
It’s a pretty subjective matter.
Many people think it’s really hard to make gold, and blame ArenaNet there is a gem to gold converter.
In my opinion, it’s actually really easy to make gold, but it takes time. People seems to love doing Citadel of Flames Exploreable Path 1, and farm that one for an hour or two. While indeed it gives plenty of gold, it can get really tedious doing so over and over again, be sure to bring friends and chat with them meanwhile in voice-chat software, it will be more fun.
I myself, play the Trading Post (It’s really boring but in the end it’s rewarding.)
Instead of Citadel of Flames you can do Fractal of the Mists too, it gives pretty cool items you can seel for gold.
Then there is the good old farming, kill the same monster over, and over again, stack up on a certain item and then sell them as well.
Making gold can be difficult…
Getting a 80th level character with all rares is very, very easy (hint cost 0 gold to do…)
Getting a 80th level character with all exotics is hard but still costs 0 gold to do…
Want ascended with your exotics, just do dailys/monthlies, full ascended in time…still costs no gold…
Really you don’t need gold at all, in this game gold is used to buy gems or to buy rare rng items off the TP (like jetpack, endless potions, minis, rare dyes etc…)…
You can beg while sitting on stairs infront of LA Bank or dance naked near MF as well (it works!).

For those suggesting the OP run CoF, please… Don’t. CoF is a soul-crushing way of making money, suitable only for mindless grinding. Sure, it’s efficient—but it’s also miserable, and full of elitists that will kick you for not being able to ping a full set of exotic ’zerker armor. This, mind you, is speaking as a player that owns 3 full sets of armor on his main, including a ’zerker set.
Gearing up in GW2 is best done through variety. Once you hit 80, buy level 80 greens off the TP with the stats you want—you should be able to kit yourself out completely for less than 50 silver. This will set you up well enough to run pretty much any PvE content, though you’ll be less powerful than you could be. Run dungeons, acquire tokens, purchase armor with the tokens. 3-4 runs of a dungeon will generally give you enough tokens for one piece of exotic armor, and can be accomplished easily in a single day by running all 3 explorable paths of a dungeon.
For trinkets, you’ll want to go for Ascended. Sure, you can buy exotic rings and amulets, but… why? 30 total runs of fractals level 10 will get you both your Ascended rings (assuming you don’t get lucky on ring drops) and around 815 of the 1350 fractal relics needed for an ascended backpiece. It’ll likely take you at least 20 days to level your first character to 80, by which point you should have enough laurels for an ascended amulet (remember to do those dailies/monthlies). Earrings you can either buy with money or get for 42k karma apiece from the temple vendors in Orr.
You’ll get one free exotic weapon by completing your personal story. Doing map completion of high-level zones gives you a very good chance at getting a few more exotics, as well as potentially some pricy crafting materials (with any luck, you’ll get 40 orichalcum ore).
Plus, at the end of that, we haven’t really spent any money. If you sell all your crafting materials (you probably should), you’ll have several gold which you can invest towards purchasing your remaining weapons and/or skins you may like.
Now, as for making money quickly: don’t worry about it. Sell crafting materials (except for T6 fine mats if you’re at all interested in a legendary), sell rares on the TP, run events with bonus chests, do fractals and dungeons, and in general enjoy yourself, and you’ll find yourself rolling with plenty of money.
Source: I don’t grind CoF. At all. I’ve almost finished my legendary, and have 3 level 80 characters fully kitted out in exotic/Ascended gear, with a fourth level 73 making its way to 80, with enough tokens in the bank to kit it out the moment it hits 80.

I have good methods to make money but they take knowledge of human behavior and also of the Trading Post. I am making 6-7 g a day with one method and 40g in a few hours with another. I try not to overdo either method because of the human aspect. I do not want to say it here but it has to do with two things people like and hate. One has to do with a certain play style (very popular too!) and one has to do with legendary weapons.
You can find me in game and ask me about it.

My gear is pretty bad I think and it’s all broken, eheh I think that’s affecting me. I also takes tons of damage from mobs and I don’t kill them that easly.
Though I’m still newbie and I find it hard to switch between Fire Earth etc, so sometimes I use only Fire or Electricity.

Well, that’s an awesome post! I thank you so much for that! My major HUGE problem is that I’m lost! There’s so much to do that I don’t know where to focus.
With this post I feel less stressed about what to do.
I like to have fun, but sometimes you need to have in mind objectives to not lose perspective, this post point to everything I need to know so far. =)
You do want to do CoF for berserker weapons eventually (pow/prec/crit) if that suits your build, as the cost of powerful bloods required to make them (5 each) is ridiculous.
I would however, recommend finding non-elitist teams to do it, such as guild members or friends. This is much the case for any content – it’s always more fun to do it with friends or guildies rather than randoms, though you can find many random people who will happily play normally rather than the elitist types.
Play TP. It takes some effort to find good deals, but you can make easy money there.
To get your starting money, look at blue level (fine) armor, say lvl60 or 70ish. Look for armor where the for-sale price is comfortably above the will-buy price. Offer to buy some at the low price, then turn around and post your buys back at the higher for sale price. This works pretty well to supplement your early dungeon runs, and you don’t have to grind or be online for it either.

The most profitable way to get gold is to get a job and buy gems. With the minimum wage of $7.25/hr in the states, you can get almost 14g/hr which is almost double of the best farm in game lol.

If your armor has the red broken symbol on it then you are getting no benefits from that piece of gear please find the nearest repair merchant and fix your self.

Gold hasn’t been an issue for me, but I enjoy making due with what I have until I can get an upgrade. I have just been trying to get map completion, and you make a good amount of money that way. A couple pieces of advice so you can get some exotic gear right when you reach 80 (or near):
1.) Don’t waste your karma. Buying chef material isn’t a bad use of karma (its cheap), certain consumables (I max out on Ash Legion spy kits), and unique recipes you can’t get elsewhere. I didn’t spend 1 karma until I was ready to get my exotic karma armor, and had over 360K (you only need 250 for a full set of armor).
2.) This isn’t critical, but when you get a bottle of liquid karma from your daily, put it in your bank. Save any karma boosters you might happen to get from a random black-lion chest (you get a few keys from your story, and a few for map completion). When you are ready to get your exotic armor, get a karma boost (from said booster or a guild banner), and drink those karma bottles down for extra karma.
3.) It is worth it to get current Masterwork or Uncommon gear on the trading post every couple of levels. They are only a few copper or silver more than the crap you get from NPCs, but way better. This will make your life easier.
4.) When you reach level 80, invest in some pirate runes (5 of them) and 1 traveller runes. Put these on gear with magic find, and use them while you PvE. It will increase the rate at which you get items that you can sell, salvage for materials, or drop in the Mystic Toilet if gambling is your thing.
5.) Have a ton of fun and play in the modes and ways that you enjoy!
Finally, I played an ele as my first character. Check out the elementalist forums for build advice. Daphoenix has a guide on how to play dagger/dagger like crazy, which can be fun. It will also get you used to swapping attunements a lot (this also makes it easier to survive ironically b/c it will keep you on the move). Scepter users have some videos, and trying to go with staff is playing the game in hard-mode.
I had trouble starting out at first, but once I got the abilities down to second nature (with a feel for their cooldowns, uses, timings, etc), you’ll start to be able to pay attention to more that is going on in the environment and time evades. Just playing, and watching a few videos will help you there.
Following a zerg capping stuff in WvW does net you quite a bit of money, along with Badges of Honor which you can trade in for lv 80 exotics.
Oh and if you want to make money very quickly, it’s CoF P1, but that gets repetitive after a while and because it generates gold from nothing, it causes the value of gold to decrease (not so quickly that your money is useless after a few runs, but there are 5 people in a party, and many hundreds of parties doing it). Conversely if you still want to have fun, you probably won’t be generating insane amounts of money unless you have incredible luck in gambling.
In short, you can’t have your cake and eat it too, but if you do find an edible cake, good for you.
PS. I just read again and noticed you are level 13, soooo…. go explore! Map completion nets you a significant cash reward (not counting the money you get from the hearts alone).

People in this thread seem to forget that there is a cost for runes, there isn’t a rune vendor for karma anywhere in the game so if you want to get superior runes of a certain type you’ll need gold even if you are a maxed out crafter with multiple alts the cost of mats is high.
If you get karma gear, keep in mind you won’t end up with a full set if you’re trying to do what some professions require you to do and that is min/max a certain stat. You have to gather the gear from multiple karma vendors in temples throughout Orr often each with different superior runes on them. It doesn’t take long to get enough karma for the sets.
Some people have suggested getting the karma gear pieces with the same rune, I haven’t tried this personally but this doesn’t guarantee that you will get a useful runestone set for your gear either. Some runes are not on the karma gear so you might not be able to get a good rune set for free (karma) for your purpose.
Some people have suggested getting the jewelry boxes in Orr and opening enough of those up until you have enough lodestones to make your own runes. RNG is never fun especially when it’s something you’re trying hard for and running a dungeon where leetists will ban you for trying to get gear is not fun either. So there’s no easy solution here honestly.
The thing that makes this the worst is that they know these are loot issues players face now but didn’t have at launch. They know that people can’t simply farm the T6 mats they need to make these item sets so there’s guarantee there that people will eventually look at the TP for help only to find that some items have been raised (not lowered as some falsely claim) to crazy price levels since the T kitten till so easily manipulated to this day.
TL;DR Basically some items aren’t available thru karma, so you’ll have to either farm for months to get them or spend money on gems to actually afford the enormous cost in the TP for items that used to be a simple matter to acquire during the first month of launch.
Also, why did it just say that the letter “P” is a curse word and change it to Kitten?!
(edited by tigirius.9014)
Go to WvW there is a karma vendor there who will supply all armour and all weapons for just karma…there is no requirement to do any WvW and its located in the starting area where your invulnerable to damage and protected by legendary protectors who will one shot any enemy long before they get any where near you…
Runes/sigils, the majority only cost 4s each tops…you can put in the lower level ones if you want until you save up…just what have you been doing with the cash from your dailys/monthlys anyway?
